Michigan May Require Online Dating Checks

This bill will probably pass. But what I want to know is, how they plan on screening all those Russian mail order brides who may or may not have butchered their husbands while they slept.

As a tech evangelist, I think online dating is the safest alternative to bar hopping and people should be able to excercise caution online as they do in real life. I see no need for a bill and its just another ludicrous step at the expense of tax payers dollars.

Well, let me just say this. I have a couple friends (of both genders) who have tried meeting people online. And EVERY SINGLE ONE has been a complete whacko. I can't think of 1 person I know who had gotten something good out of it. It's just a bad idea.

Secondly, I think the internet is the Wild West of the Digital Age, which is why I think everyone has such a profound interest in it. Unlike the West of old, however, the nature of it in that it exists everywhere and nowhere at the same time makes it significantly less, if not altogether impossible, tameable. Trying to do so is an exercise in futility.

Actually I know of quite a few people who met online and who are either happy or married. In fact, I have no less than three industry buddies who met their partners online.

My younger brother who works for an aircraft manufacturer as a programmer, met his current girlfriend online. They were down here this past weekend visiting us and they're quite happy. He is 30; she is 24. They met on match.com

If I wasn't a public figure and happily tied to the ol' ball and chain, I'd probably search for someone online as well; since I don't go to clubs or places where you'd even think of looking for a partner. No, church doesn't count. Not to mention the fact that my social skills are as good as expired milk.

Nothing wrong with online dating; you just have to excercise due diligence as you would in normal life.
