Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called a proposal to make English the official language "racist" on the Senate floor yesterday.

"This amendment is racist. I think it's directed basically to people who speak Spanish," the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform.

What a cop-out. How can a racist ammendment originate from one who is not racist?

You should have heard Reid's nonsensical, innuendo-laden stories during his floor time. Can you believe that these are the types of individuals that run the country?

Learning English used to be a requirement of citizenship for all immigrants coming into this country.

Recent events have clearly shown that the peoples of Mexico are hell bent on taking back the areas of the US that used to be theirs.

Wrong Answer in my book. I had a family member (distant cousin) who died at the Alamo and I ain't forgetting it.

If our legislators have finally pulled their heads out of their collective posteriors and wish to make English the predominant form of communication. Let them. Nothing racist about it.

If the Spanish speaking folks would rather speak Spanish, they can go back to where they illegally came from and stop driving our wages down as well as drawing benefit from our governments.

Too many of them sneak across our border. They won't be identifying themselves to the government, for the purpose of becoming legitimate citizens, for fear of deportation and the subsequent denial of entry through legal channels.

Then let him know how you feel.

You can send an email directly to Harry Reid or to Reid via Congress.

Just remember to carefully proofread anything you send ... before you send it. Make certain your email doesn't mistake "to" for "two" or "too" ... or "your" for "you're" or "its" for "it's" or any of the kazillion mistakes most spell-checkers never catch. If you're unsure of your spelling or grammar, run it by your dad ... or somebody else educated before 1980.

If you want to be taken seriously by your federal representative, be serious in your written correspondence.

It's kind of sickening to me that this kind of discourse has to wait for an election year. This subject should have been addressed by Congress 9/12/01, not 5 years later. Politics as usual, I guess.

Anyway, I think it's pretty much understood that English is the national language. I'm all for making at least a passable fluency in English a requirement for citizenship, though. It can only help the immigrants imho.

I don't believe it's "racist" to say that English is our official language; I believe it's self-evident.

Racism still exists in this country, Any person of color knows this. However Reid's statements are baseless and the worst kind of political pandering and blunt REAL complaints about race and class in this country. This type of gamesmenship also adds grist to the millfor those who already underestimate the cost of racism in a diverse society. As a self avowed progressive I see not a thing wrong with the citizens of a country being required to actually speak the Language

It is this kind of lilly-livered rhetoric that is drving me out of the Democratic party. Do us ALL a favor and vote this ******* out asap.

Honestly, this measure was long overdue. Now maybe the government can save loads of money on applications that are printed in several languages using up more ink and paper.

Applications such as welfare. They way I look at it, much like Rush Limbaugh, if you can't read or speak the language you shouldn't be entitled to anything this country has to offer. Even voting, you know how much paper is wasted. It should all be in english and none of this foreign language crap. Learn the god damn language.

I'll give you another example of why this measure should pass. I work in a doctor's office. We have tons of spanish patients, mainly dominican, the phone calls I've gotten are jokes. I have had quite a few spanish people call el stupido because I didn't speak spanish.

So, in conclusion, it's about time to put the screws to this easy pass these aliens have recieved. Why we've bent over backwards for them is beyond me where other past immigrants weren't give the same treatment.

I wouldn't be in too big a rush to do that. Reid has seniority and is one of the few Nevadans with both the power and resolve to continue blocking Yucca Mountain.

'Though I have no idea why he even bothered to make that "racist" statement. Especially with Bush's corporate Republicans doing their best to bushwhack any effective legislation or the enforcement of current laws.

Before you toss Reid out on his ear, ask him why he did what he did. And if perhaps he might be in a mood to re-think his position.
