Põdi Posted May 23, 2001 Report Posted May 23, 2001 Having never played BC3000AD I am curious as to how people in the community acquire their rank, ship names etc which appear in their sigs. Do you choose your own or is it assigned to you by the game? It probably seems like a silly question to all you vets, but I'm just curious.Oh another thing, if I deploy ground troops in BCM, being the Rambo I am (not) can I join them in a firefight? I think I'd get a bit frustrated watching them from afar.[ 05-23-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]
Põdi Posted May 23, 2001 Author Report Posted May 23, 2001 Ok, thanks. That answers the first part of my question. Now what about the second?
Epsilon 5 Posted May 23, 2001 Report Posted May 23, 2001 If you deploy troops, then you are a ship commander. You must be a marine to have something else than light armor and a pistol (eg assault rifle, sniper, shield...)
Tyrn Posted May 23, 2001 Report Posted May 23, 2001 quote:Originally posted by Paddy Gregory: Ok, thanks. That answers the first part of my question. Now what about the second? If you really want to dance around with grunts carrying only:2 x nutripak 1 x medpak 1 x pistol 1 x wristlaser 1 x die 2 x Type1 clip (see this for details of marine gear)you're more than welcome to do so. Just two questions beforehand, what color flowers do you like and who is your next of kin?
Põdi Posted May 23, 2001 Author Report Posted May 23, 2001 Mmmmmm, OK. Why can't a Commander suit up as a marine? So is there a caste in which you can fly space and/or planetary fighters AND go on marine-type missions? I'm thinking along the lines of Space, Above and Beyond here (I can't believe they only made on series), where you are a pilot and marine all rolled into one. I'd love a scenario where you attack an enemy planet, set the BC to take out the orbiting defenses, while you hop into a fighter and take out a few for your own personal pleasure. Once the area is clear, escort your marines to the planets surface, do a few strafing/dogfighting runs, then land and join the jarheads in a fragging spree. Possible? Yay or Nay?Edit: OK, I've read the assets page, so I've sort of answered my own questions.[ 05-23-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

Guest Blackwell Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 Gentlemen,Does anybody have tape of the series Space: Above and Beyond. No comercial copies are available.[ 05-24-2001: Message edited by: Blackwell ]
Põdi Posted May 24, 2001 Author Report Posted May 24, 2001 Wha was this moved here, I thought it had been deleted? The answer to my question about ships and ranks has already been answered, I'm now looking for an explanation as to why you can't have a multi-role character as described above. Thanks
Epsilon 5 Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 quote:I'm now looking for an explanation as to why you can't have a multi-role character as described above. It would be too easy to win... As a commander, you can fly fighters too, but you stay with you standard gear on the ground. I think it's enough. The marine is stuck on the ground (generally), but can at least have decent weaponry.

I only referred to Space, Above and Beyond because that's the kind of role which would appeal to me. Ease up SC. What I'm trying to say is, it would be interesting to have dynamic characters as well as the dynamic universe. For example, everyone chooses a race, that's all. from there you decide, military academy for such a career, or University to become a medic, scientist, diplomat etc. As you proceed through a military career, you go through several roles (marine, pilot etc) until you become a commander. But because you've been through the necessary training you can also hitch up with the grunts (with the necessaary equipment) or have a go at dogfighting, as will be possible anyway. Then, if you become disillusioned with the whole military thing, resign, take a sabbatical or simply steal a fighter and just go AWOL. Get work as a mercenary, do a bit of piracy or just explore and trade. Hell, go back to Uni and become a Biochemist (mmm, sounds TOO familiar) if you really want to. Anyway, wishful thinking probably. It's just what I'd like to see in a Sim/RPG/FPS hybrid. SC, what next after GCO? Retirement? More games? Cos I've had a great idea for a game knocking around for years (but then haven't we all?) Peace Paddy
