Planets in RP

I've read up as much as I can on RPing, but I was wondering if there is a limitation on what planets we can use in RPing? Which planets are likely to be full of preset events? - ie I've seen Earth and Mars mentioned a lot as HQs etc and if I was thinking up a story or background I might want to avoid them.

Adding to that - does anyone have a link to any universe maps? My knowledge outside of sol is pathetic.

There is the official star map thingy

in the new BCM appendix available in the BCM downloads section. Along with a bunch of other stuff like unit pics and stats.
