Guest Posted June 9, 2000 Report Posted June 9, 2000 During a recent bout of unemployment, unfortunately still my current condition, I modeled a VRML interior of our beloved Battlecruiser. This is mearly a training exercise for me, partly to start learning VRML and partly to familiarize myself with the layout of the BC. (I can't wait for BCM to FINALLY take care of those nasty intruders!) Here are some screen shots of the .wrl, you can see each deck or all of them combined. I hand modeled it using IE5 with Cosmo player 2.1. It should work in Netscape, but I havn't tested it, yet. And, yes, you can walk around inside. This group of geometry in not optimized, and brings my PII 333 to its knees when I render the whole thing. There is no LOD at all, so the entire object is drawn regardless if you can see it. I hope to speed this up with a LOD attached to the view object. http://www.cybertours.com/~lanceg/graphics/deck1.jpg http://www.cybertours.com/~lanceg/graphics/deck2.jpg http://www.cybertours.com/~lanceg/graphics/deck3.jpg http://www.cybertours.com/~lanceg/graphics/allDecks.jpg Before I release this to the BC community, I would like to hear from the S.C. and receive permission. If the S.C. has ANY problem with it, I will not release it. His word is law. Nor do I wish to bother the S.C. with reviewing this toy and tearing him away from his current projects. If the S.C. never responds, I'll never release it.AND, it will not be supported. I am not qualified to teach VRML (heck, I'm barely a beginner) and I will not be responsible if it causes your PC to melt, etc. This crude 'toy' is not accurate! It's close in some areas, way off in others and downright ____ed up on a few. I would like some input as to where some of the glaring errors are, but please, don't nit-pick. Its my first attempt.I've had tons of fun roaming the halls, planing my strategies, formulating defense and attack plans based on the layout of the BC. Now whenever I get boarded in 'the game', I have a much clearer 'mind's eye' of the action. I can almost 'see' my marines charging down the corridor, intent on destroying the intruder, (and running right past the doorway! Argh!)Enjoy the screen shots for now. Hopefully the .wrl link will follow!------------------ Commander Ledge Rock GCV Computron ICQ 68356179 EST
Eclipse Posted June 9, 2000 Report Posted June 9, 2000 Hey, for a first attempt it doesn't look half bad. Which version of the BC is it? ------------------ Cmdr. Antilles Spectre Fleet Spectre Starstation ICV- Eclipse Chief Security Officer Learning is not compulsory... Neither is survival.
Guest Posted June 9, 2000 Report Posted June 9, 2000 Thank you. I hope you get to see the .wrl too! To answer your question, this is based on these pictures, http://www.bc3000ad.com/pics/bcte/bcdeck1.jpg http://www.bc3000ad.com/pics/bcte/bcdeck2.jpg http://www.bc3000ad.com/pics/bcte/bcdeck3.jpg http://www.bc3000ad.com/pics/bcte/bcdeck4.jpg ...which are posted here on this site. They are currently in the Tactical Engagement area, therefore I think its the BC Mark III. I certainly hope so, anyways! I am continuing to refine it. Adjusted some of the lighting and am pondering an elevator platform in the turbolift tubes. Right now I'm just futzing with it...Thank you again for noticing! ------------------ Commander Ledge Rock GCV Computron ICQ 68356179 EST
ShoHashi Posted June 9, 2000 Report Posted June 9, 2000 I think it certainly puts things into perspective! I sure hope the SC approves, because I'd like to see more of it!------------------ Cmdr ShoHashi Spectre Fleet Commanding Officer, PreComm Crew, StarStation New Frontier ICV Aries ICQ 484321 [email protected] "Attack With Effectiveness"
Supreme Cmdr Posted June 9, 2000 Report Posted June 9, 2000 Looks cool! Stick it on a fan site somewhere, gimme the link, and I'll add it to the links page.Nice job for a first-timer!
Guest Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 Thanks S.C.! Your kind words of encouragement mean a great deal!OK kids, here it is. http://www.cybertours.com/~lanceg/graphics/BCintLayoutC.zip I hope everyone enjoys my little 'toy'. To anyone who wishes to modify this .wrl, be warned, trying to decipher my spagetti code is hazardous to your health! I shall contuinue to work on this time-waster and if I make any improvements I'll post it again! If its OK, I'd like to host this on my webspace, but I have no problem with any fan site useing this for their content, if you would be so kind as to give my name some small print? Thank you in advance.Enjoy folks! Oh yes, any CONSTRUCTIVE critisism is welcome! Bring it on!------------------ Commander Ledge Rock GCV Computron ICQ 68356179 EST
Guest aramike01 Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 Great work, keep it up! You wouldn't happen to design patios, would you? I want to do this summer project... ------------------ Cmdr. TBone Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 Well, now that I've got it, how do I use it? I tried opening it as a file in Netscape, but it only came out as text. IE 5 doesn't even do anything when I open it. The screenshots look great, and I wann see the rest! ------------------ Captain TBone GCV Delorean "If you're gonna build a time machine, you might as well do it in style"
Guest aramike01 Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 Just downloaded the file as well. Still, I cannot get them to display.------------------ Cmdr. Canuck Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 You'll need to install a VRML Viewer to see this stuff. There is one on the Windoze 98 CD if that is what you are using.Just use the Add/remove programs setup wizard it's under the Internet tools section.------------------ Cmdr. TBone Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 And for those of us stuck in the past? (i.e. still using W95?)------------------ Captain TBone GCV Delorean "If you're gonna build a time machine, you might as well do it in style"
Guest Posted June 10, 2000 Report Posted June 10, 2000 For those who are having trouble.I zipped up the files and directories and stuffed them in the zip file. Use the restore directories option when you are unzipping. To view: Install the VRML viewer included with Win98 by going into add/removwe programs and selecting the viewer and installing the plugin. I developed this using the Cosmoplayer plugin for IE and Netscape. The latest version is 2.1 (I think!) You can d/l this at www.cosmoplayer.com, its a universal player and has worked well for me!There are no movement controls except what your browser gives you. I have included a few viewpoints which are selectable from the pull-down menu inside of Comso.I am sorry for not including these basic procedures in my previous posts. If ya can't unzip a file, you're beyond my help. There are other VRML viewers out there, I'm sure, but I've not seen them and have no idea how they will render this .wrl.I've got my kids visiting right now, I'll have ta get back to ya later.
Canuck Posted June 11, 2000 Report Posted June 11, 2000 The Cosmoplayer.com link doesn't work (at least not for me). However you can get Cosmoplayer from http://www.cai.com/cosmo/ ------------------ Cmdr. Guest Posted June 11, 2000 Report Posted June 11, 2000 Thanks, Canuck! It had been a while since I loaded the Cosmoplayer site, I winged it and tried to post the url from memory. That'll teach me!I'm still hoping to receive some feedback on the 'correctness' of this model. I have seen the screen shots of TE and believe that the cargo bay is all one room, two levels with ramps to go between decks. I know for a fact that my bridge is flat-out wrong. I didn't even include the turbolifts or the Cmdrs quarters. How about some fortunate beta-tester responding and describing the layout of these rooms? Is the third deck actually 2 levels? Does the VTOL extend all the way up to the top of the BC? The floor plans I used as a base for my model were only shot from above, no sideways view. I'd LOVE to continue refining this, but without further hard data I would be speculating. Come on, folks, lets get cracking! For my next project, I'm thinking about modeling GALCOM, with interior. Perhaps some industrious beta-tester would be able to post some screen shots of the station layout? Mmmmmmmm, station layout.Wish list. Animated turbo-lift platforms. Yup, I think I can do that. Working airlocks. Hmmm, I think I can do that too. Definately need to improve the lighting still, but am out of ideas. If anyone has any lighting experience, please leave some of it here, thank-you-too-much.Chow for now.------------------ Commander Ledge Rock GCV Computron ICQ 68356179 EST
Guest Baraka Posted June 11, 2000 Report Posted June 11, 2000 ...hope you included the galley/kitchen - with plenty of long-bladed carving knives for me to WREAK HAVOC ON ALL THOSE GALCOM PIGS! Guest Posted June 11, 2000 Report Posted June 11, 2000 Just added animated turbo lift platforms. Sorry, no buttons to push, just a simple, timed animation loop. It doesn't seem to slow it down too much!Later! ------------------ Commander Ledge Rock GCV Computron ICQ 68356179 EST
