My niece managed to toast my parent's computer. I finally got most of the drivers back in but the video has me stumped. It's locked into 640 x 480 at 16 colors. I've tried different vga adapters but no luck. Changed the monitor to plug and play and still no luck. The System restore function looks nice but didn't do a darn thing.

It's a generic computer from one of the companies off of pricewatch.com.

Athlon 700

128 Ram

16 meg AGP onbaord video card.

The monitor is a 17" Plug and Play from Comp USA.

I have told them to get the latest dx from Microsoft tomorrow.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Aside from scoring the latest DX8 drivers, I can't really think of what the problem would be... except for the fact that I generally associate "Onboard Video" with "Big fat stinking problem" smile.gif

Try heading to the official site of the makers of the monitor and scoring their drivers. Load 'em up and see what happens.

If SC's suggestion doesn't pan out....

Built-in or on-board video cards are often hybrids and you need to get the drivers from the system board mfg.

Did they send the system board manual w/ the pc? The video card should be listed there.

Did they send you the system board CD? If they did there should be a video folder on that cd w/ the correct drivers.

If not, you may need to pop the cover on the pc... get a flashlight and look at the system board. MFG name and model number should be printed on it somewhere. Hopefully it isn't some off-wall maker and you can find them on the internet. At that point you could search their site for drivers/board info or contact their tech support and they can tell you what you have.

Have fun! biggrin.gif

Oh it's been a blast.

Deleting vid and monitor entries didn't help. Yeah I have the manual and the cd for the motherboard. It's a K7ASA motherboard from AMR (Plus) Technologies. And it's an AMD 750 not 700 like I thought earlier.

I had better luck when I went into the folder and found the SiS Multimedia 630 v1.03.50 drivers. My brother recognized the screens as it was installing. That would allow better resolutions and color modes but upon restart it didn't like the monitor. Black screen and refusing to boot. So I've made a little headway but not much.

Come to find out it wasn't entirely the neice after all. It had had the black screen earlier in the week and bro used system restore to put it back. I wonder if the monitor itself could be crudding up already.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate it.

biggrin.gif See, isn't this really fun?? biggrin.gif

Now you need to go into advanced settings and change your monitor from "generic" to match the one that you really do have. If there isn't an exact match, see if they have some drivers for some older models for the same mfg company.

You may have to go into safe mode and delete the monitor there. Reboot into normal mode and win me should reinstall the monitor, hopefully the right one. Having the correct monitor settings will set up the right refresh rates and sync rates as well.
