Just a general rant and FYI

I went out and bought 512Meg of memory for my machine, it's an AMD K6-III so it runs off a 100Mhz Buss, I ask for PC-100 because I don't like to mix memory. Well, I install the memory and the computer is acting like I yanked memory instead of adding some, and it starts crashing every time I turn around.

Well, I decide to pull one of the DRAMS that I bought to see if it might fix the problem, well, shoot, the memory is PC-133. The package said 100, but the memory says 133. Well now I'm pissed, running on 64 meg right now and it runs just like it was running before, except no crashes!!

So, lesson, DON'T mix memory speeds, even if they say you can, and ALWAYS check the label on the DRAM before installing it!!!

So I have pulled the memory, going to take it back, yell at the dude for mismarking his DRAM, and get the 100 DRAM that my computer seems to want. Will update when I reinstall the memory!!

But hey at $67 a piece, what do I expect!! right?

That'd odd. Believe it or not, my present configuration is 384MB of both PC100 and PC133 RAM. I originally had a single 128MB chip in my system, and bought a 256MB chip as well for an upgrade. I didn't expect it to work properly if I mixed 'em together on my motherboard (I have an Abit KT7-RAID), but I figured "What the hell, I could do with 384 megs" and threw 'em together anyways. Smooth as a baby's arse.

So weird, I have an ASUS and it absolutely hated the 133mhz, now that I have replaced it with the 100 it workd great, so strange, Oh well!! lol

I'm no expert at this, but in the very early days, wasn't their a rule that you had to have the chips in from fastest to slowest, or slowest to fastest or something like that?

If you PC is crashing with supposedly mix n' match memory, try reversing the order of the chips and see what happens.

I have a 66MHz mobo with 96MB PC100 SDRAM (which worls fine btw), I'm just wondering if should keep an eye out for PC100 or just buy some PC133. Seems to be a lot of contradictory information regarding mixing memory speeds. What do you guys think?
