This is a slight tangent from a thread in the development forum. I'm curious to see this discussion continue so here it be...

You guys may just be on to something with the idea of advertising in epic games like this or everquest or anything that allows many gamers into a world like environment... I can see it now...

Billboard next to Main Buildings : $200.00 mo

Billboard in ass end of nowhere : $20.00 mo

and players would see these and companies might want to spend money on advertising things these players would like anyway...

Vorpal

quote:

Ack... horrible idea! Seeing advertising in a game I already paid for?? When it's a free demo it's one thing, when it's something I went down to the store to pay for with my own cash then that's just sick.

"You've been healed by Temple of Helm for 30 HP. And Congradulations!! You will now recieve a year's subscription to Petco's bi-weekly catalogue!"

Sorry had to scream that out, back on topic...

Why not? As long as they're not popup ads or clickable ads that take you out of the game, and straight to a link to their website, or something stupid like that, then why not?

I'm not arguing the case for advertisements in
this
game, just the case for advertisements in games in general. It might make games cheaper, if the money all comes from advertising revenue, adverts that are on billboards which you could just easily ignore (You think I pay attention to ads in the real world?).

In the end, it's the advertisers money. If they want to help bring down the cost of games, by all means. As long as the ads aren't overly intrusive, it wouldn't bother me.

Vorpal

Why?? Because a computer game **THAT I PAID FOR** is the last place I want to see some frigin marketing department throw even more %#& $*&@ advertising at me!

Geez.. In the supermarket I go to they have ADS ON THE GROUND so when you reach to the bottom shelf there's yet another lame product that I really don't need to hand my money over for sticking in my face!

This is a bad idea IMO. I would seriously NOT buy a game if it contained ads for various things in it.

Think of it like this. Your listening to a new CD from your favorite band. You get halfway through the CD and suddenly an ad starts playing for Sony stereo equipment... your new state of the art CD player is programed so that when this type of ad plays you can't fast forward it or skip the track. Soon all new CD's start doing this until it's "an industry standard."

Computer games are one of the few medias left that don't have advertising directly in them. I think it would be nice to keep it that way.

The guys who made Cataclism (Barking Dog Studios) did some free CS maps and they have their logo and company name on bilboards in the maps... that's fine by me. They took the time and made something for the public for free and you have to download them in the first place to have them in the game, but what your talking about could be taken advantage of in no time. Soon you could have ads for NVidia and SBLive cards on the side of Everquest buildings. That's like seeing a Butterfingers ad pasted into the lower corner of a classic painting.

I'll ad that if ads helped pay for a game I got totaly for free then that's fine. The second I have to pay money for it though I don't want to see any advertising past the game box and manual.

I think you need to stop looking at the floor, and concentrate on what it is you're doing.

Well, maybe we could forget the ads, but put "in-game" ads... I mean, ads for people of the game: fleets, trading corporations, some random touristic groups...

?? How could you not notice a two foot long Laye's potatoe chip ad. I'm not saying I sat there and read it. It's there, there's a giant potatoe chip staring back at me, you can't not notice it. That's my point.

Your running around the next corner of Half-Life 2, there's 10 marines chasing you, you run by a Coors Beer ad... you can't not notice it. Your ripped out of the game for a second as you mind goes over all the reasons why you hate Coors beer. Are you playing a game or YET another commercial?

Epsilon 5: Fictional ads are something different. There's no multi-milion dollar corporation's marketing department behind it.

As long as it's done so that it fits the context of the game ("artistic continuity"?). For example, a scroll nailed onto the side of a building as a sign up sheet for a new guild or clan then that's all part of the fun of the game already.

I have to agree with Vorpal, as long as the ad is done in the style of the games, eg no adds for the latest DVD player in something like everquest or Baldurs gate, it has already been done in Duke nuken there were bill boards (fictional I know) but what if those adds were for real products, there would be a perfect example of how the ad could easily be added to the game and not affect its game play.

Hey, I just about something: what about ads from the real-world, but only from players? I mean, ads about themselves, their webpages... dunno? Nothing from companies?

Just an idea.

I wouldnt mind seeing a coca cola logo in a Galcom station or a poster promoting Geico , just as long as it doesn't become overly obvious that there's advertising going on.

It might give the SC a few more bucks... and that helps out.

Posted

I look at it this way.For GCO. If it's advertising from the real world, like coca cola and other stuff then if it brings down the monthly cost of the game, I am fine with it. If it's for people in the game, if I am a trader and have a trading outpost someplace, I would love for people to come visit and say that they saw my add a gazillion miles away in some other system, it stuck and they were around so they dropped by.

How many Nike logo products do you wear?

The game context is 1000 years in the future. I doubt anyone who could advertise now would still be in existance during this game time in the future. Could anyone come up with a plausible explanation how companies like that could exist a millennium later? I even doubt any the countries on earth now would exist. Let alone the businesses...

If you could put any corporate ad, who would be permitted to put ads? I cam believe it wouldn't make sense to put ads for clothes, for example, but any electronics, computer and junk food (coke┬®, pepsi┬®, cadbury┬®...) makers could put ads.

Whoah ... did I start something? What I was thinking was like just picture ads kind of like SCs billboard that would be in the game to read like in online cities or something. Reason behind that it helps the developer make money and - if popular enough, might also allow games like Everquest and GCO to not operate on a pay-for-play basis but rather be paid for by the advertising. Kind of like the way Baseball, Football, and other sports are sponsored by companies, why not let companies sponsor games? And by that token not let them make the ads intrusive just part of the scenery... like flying through a city in GCO and seeing the big Coca Cola billboard on the tallest skyscraper, just shit like that.

Uh none what so ever. Mostly you find me wearing a pair of Levis, a solid dark colored t-shirt (black, green or dark red usualy). Maybe a flanel if it's cool out and some DocMartins or Chuck Tayler's... The only thing with any blaring logos on them are a few game shirts and ones for companies I've worked for...

I was thinking before I crashed out that seeing real world logos all over a Nascar race car game would actualy make the game seem even more realistic (someone mentioned something similar above). I dunno, but what could you possibly advertise from the real world in Everquest or some other fantasy related game? As for Sci-Fi... that's a little more of a maybe.

I think some people in this thread are thinking I'm pro on this, I'm completely against it. But I've said what I've wanted to say and will just let be for now.

I did think this had the potential for a good discussion though, so it's cool to see it continuing...

Joel I should have read your post more thoroughly before I replied.

However, as a coder myself, I know I take pride in my work and even consider it to be a personal "artwork" of sorts

I don't code for a living but that's exactly how I see it. Computer games especialy are in their own way a form of art. A cohesive fusion of many artists (programers, music, texture artists, etc). The second advertising starts dictating the development of a game it's no longer art, it's the media's creation.

If this ever happened care would have to be taken so that the placement of the ads and the type of ads that get put in are left up to the game developers.

Did you ever see the close-ups of the cities in the Elite games (you dock near a planet starbase and use your zoom to view the area).

There are billboards and signs on the sides of buildings, all for futuristic products.

Posted

It's a free market. If game companies start putting tons of ads in games, so be it. Nobody is forcing you to buy those games.

Maybe this: $50 no ad version, $25 ad version.

Either way, if you don't like what's in a game, would you actually buy it?

Posted

Well, it's a question of moderation. If the level of ads is acceptable, I'll buy the ads version. If it's ruining the game, I'll take the un-ads version.

But how to hide them then? The ads we're speaking are ads on billboads. If you were thinking of popups or fixed banners when you go to connect screen (like in diablo), then hell no.

But a Nvidia billboard in the middle of nowhere could be funny.

I think it would be a good idea to have ADs on billboards, posters, etc. I mean, where in any of the first-world or second-world countries can you go and not see many advertisements?

Beside, it'd be fun to shoot up billboards.

A 3Dfx billboard would be VERY funny.

ADS in games... it's been done in the EA-sports series. FIFA 200X, NBA 200X, etc... all have those ads on the side of the court. To be honest, I don't mind while playing the game.

To be honest, while I was playing Duke Nukem in the old days, I could care less about what commercials were on the walls and which weren't. It's easy to fix yourself on the game.

I personally believe that would be a great idea. Ads for in-game only traders, fleets (for recruitement campaigns "we want you!..."), touristic groups or just for the game itself... The limitations are practically endless.

I should really disagree of a game that is PACKED with those things, so ads for coca-cola, 7-up, or even DUREX or something similar would probably get a lot of negative response.

My opinion is also that you shouldn't have to much ads. One to three ads per city should probably be enough.

I'm sure that SC would L-O-V-E to put in a replacement instead of seeing the ads, seeing some beautiful woman instead

that's my humble opinion....

When I was thinking about being part of the Paramedic caste, I came up with a motto that would make a great advertising slogan for a fictional spacefaring medical organization:

"Whether you're GalCom or Insurgent, or somewhere in between,

we will always be there to reunite you with your spleen."
