Guest Mikel Posted June 21, 2001 Report Posted June 21, 2001 I would like some help to try and solve my computer problems, any help would be appreciated.For some reason, my computer has become crash happy. It got to the point where I reformated it and that seemed to help for a little bit...until it crashed again. I'm sorta getting..agitated at my computer. I turned my AGP aperature down from 4x to 2x to see if it would and that was a negative. When I pulled it out of its cubby-hole in my desk to help ventilate it, that helped a little too.Anyway533 Celeron 64 RAM Jaton B-16, based on Nvidia Vanta Win98SEI will provide more information as needed

Guest Mikel Posted June 21, 2001 Report Posted June 21, 2001 By crash happy I mean the following:Freezing or crashing of 3D games (Half-Life, HL mods: Firearms, Action HL, Serious Sam, 3D activeworlds). Can play for a maximum of 1-1 1/2 hours before freezing; Serious Sam freezes up in around 1/2 hour, even in safe mode. Computer also seems to freeze when I run Winamp and IE at the same time. Also, I've narrowed it down to my RAM or powersource; It's only about 80 degrees in my room right now and the problems have still occured. Even though room temp is only 80, keeping your cpu active (as in your playing games) for around 1hr nonstop can raise it to nearly 95-100 degrees.Especially when you run a celeron at a pentium 3 speed, it gets sort of hot. I have a celeron 500, and run seti overnight. Once, I upgraded my ram, and I accidently touched the heat sink.... ouch.... (don't worry, the system was off) Thermaltake has some good heatsinks that should help for ram, cpu, and video cards overheating. you can buy them at googlegear.comAlso try updating bios.

I've seen lots of incredibly odd-ball problems from freeze-ups to crashes that were directly caused by not having the latest released video drivers.And since when did companies start charging for BIOS upgrades?! They've always been free downloads AFAIK.

On Award BIOS's main page, they link to this site for a upgrade, although I found another page that'll hopefully help me.[edit: Well, I got a utility that shows me information on my BIOS...except it's in German! Ack! All I can tell from it is that I think Asus made my Mobo...nothing else though.[ 06-22-2001: Message edited by: Mikel ]
Guest Posted June 22, 2001 Report Posted June 22, 2001 see if it crashes in windows safe mode. If it does, format. if after format it still crashes, its hardware
