Guest $iLk Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 Well, here we go.I am running a dual boot right now (Windows 2000 Pro and Windows ME)Is there a performance decrease in either OS when running a dual boot, or is there a certain drive one OS should be installed on?I say this not because it is causing me noticible problems as of now, but will it in the future?
Menchise Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 The good news.I have Win98 and NT4 on the same hard drive and I haven't noticed a decrease in performance as a result.The bad news.There will be a future decrease in performance as you install new hardware and software, a.k.a. Windows Rot. This occurs on single boot systems as well.I think Windows ME requires installation on the primary partition, usually Drive C.
jstuart Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 I have win98se and win2k pro. I have separate drives for each. My boot drive is a 4.3gb ide hd, on here I have win98se and office2kpro. My second hd is a 10.0gb ide hd, on here I have win2kpro w/spack2. I also have office XP enterprise.I see no slowdown in performance at all. Windows 95,98,Me must be insatlled on primary hd, c drive. Win NT and win2k can be installed on primary if you want or on any other hd (ide or scsi).If you adopt a 2 drive system, I believe it gives you more freedom to do things.I also have a 3rd hd, a 40.0 gb ide, this I use for gaming. My goal is to fill it up with BCM and anytthing BCM related.I hoped that helped
desolator Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 I got all the answers to your questions...first of all, there will be no performance decrese since you only use one OS at a time. There will be though, as someone stated, decreasing performance the longer you got Windows installed, and the more things you install in it. (This will not happen on a linux system.) The OS is preferably installed on your primary drive since your bootblock resides on that one. It can be changed though, but I can't see why anyone would do that. (especially with Win, since it's a pain to change...)

I didn't get any problems.I just used F-Disk, to partition my new hard drive, copy it over, make my D drive my primary, upgrade from 98 to Me, and there you go.I used to use F-Disk a ton, back in DOS/Early Windows 95, on my old POS Packard Bell........ I'm a command line junkie still, and the Windows Registry doesn't bother me either...... I had to troubleshoot everything myself, just because of the crappy tech support..... But, learning the hard way was better for me.Did I mention, I'm extremely fluent in HTML? I told you I was a jack-of-all-trades! -----I've got my "Windows Rot" problem under control, too! Had way too many programs installed since 1999 (last reformat).... Un-Installed programs I didn't use, and went into registry, win.ini, and Program Files folder, and deleted their stuff..... Seems to have worked.....Results may vary. Restrictions may apply.......
