Soback Posted September 23, 2001 Report Posted September 23, 2001 Many hoped that the decision to hold the 2008 Olympics in Beijing would improve human rights in China. But recent news is not encouraging.2000 - Number of Internet cafes closed by the Chinese government.6000 - Number of Internet cafes ordered to immediately "suspend operations"6 - Number of days after Beijing was awarded the Olympics that the closures were announced.Source: Xinhua News Agency.Out of Popular Science, October 2001 issue.
Soback Posted September 23, 2001 Author Report Posted September 23, 2001 I think that the decision to hold those Olympic games in Beijing should be reversed. Chinese government is screwing people every way they can and every time they can.
Cmdr Nova Posted September 23, 2001 Report Posted September 23, 2001 Yep, I would have much rather seen Toronto get the '08 Games. When I was up there with some relatives over summer, there were signs and posters about supporting the Olympic Vote for Toronto. I think they deserve it, too.But it would be an extremely rare thing for them to reverse their decision.....
aramike Posted September 24, 2001 Report Posted September 24, 2001 I personally couldn't believe that they were awarded the Olympics. A nation shouldn't be allowed any world event until there are *NO* political prisoners in their jails and they haven't KILLED anyone with faltering beliefs.
