I just heard a plane has crashed in Queens in NY. Anyone got any more news? No terrorist link apparently.

Bloody hell, my Brother-in-Law lives there and my in-laws are staying with him. Thank Christ they've gone away for a few days.

The plane was heading to the Dominican Republic, eyewitnesses report what looked like a flame or explosion on one of the engines, the plane attempted to land but just fell out of the sky.

Not a real popular airline from what I'm told.

That's all there is to know as of now, might as well wait until tonight when they piece it together.

Once they get ahold of the flight recorders, some more information is bound to come to light.

CNN Website: http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/11/12/newyork.crash/index.html

Here's some info that may be useful:

-At least 16 people injured on the ground in Queens

-American Flight 587, an Airbus A300, left JFK, bound for Dominican Republic

-1 of 2 blackboxes have been recovered

-NTSB Investigating this as an accident, unless something else shows up.

-Flight 587 took off at 9:14 a.m. Monday and within minutes was in flames in Queens, one of New York's five boroughs.

-- 1:00 p.m. EST -- Giuliani holds news conference, telling people they should not "speculate" about the cause of the crash. Also, Giuliani says it appears there are no survivors in the wreckage.

-- 2 p.m. EST -- NYC-area airports reopen, accepting incoming flights. LaGuardia and Newark also allowing departures.

---

Also, according to a news conference going on right now, it seems that the plane "split apart before hitting the ground". Also, there are reports that the pilot dumped the plane's fuel right after takeoff.

My take: Don't speculate or "assume" anything, until it's seriously verified. I have a feeling that more pandemonium/paranoia is going to come about after this. I remember going to the dentist just days after September 11, and there was a person in the waiting room talking about the second coming (of Jesus), people going to heaven, "only believers will live on", blah blah. Eeeek. Just the thought makes me cringe.

Heh, it's another one of those days. I get home from school, gotta do my homework, turn on the TV, hear about a plane crash, and find out that Mark McGwire just retired (I'm a St. Louis baseball fan, thank you).. *sigh*

Depends on how far back you want to go, IIRC Amtrak and others weren't doing very well some years ago. Crashes being the common keyword.
