Recently, Gamespot published its annual Best and Worst Games of the Year Awards feature. The results would be described by many as unexpected.

First, Gamespot created a new category (Best AI) so that Black & White, which shares Gamespot's highest review score of the year, could win something. It wasn't even nominated for Best Strategy Game.

Secondly, the game that won the highest number of awards (3) was Clive Barker's Undying (an FPS published by EA) yet it wasn't listed in the Top Ten Games of the Year category. Max Payne, which was number 2 in the list, only received one award, Best Single Player Action Game, of which Undying was a nominee.

Finally, the winner of the Game Of The Year award was Serious Sam. I don't think anybody saw this one coming.

Serious Sam... Game of the Year? I'm not denying that SS wasn't a really good game. It was, and it was a lot of fun... but there was just nothing extremely original or amazing about it. I played through it once and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since. It just doesn't seem like GOTY material...

...and what's up with Max Payne as best single player game? I'll admit that it was a great game and bullet time was definetly one of the most original features I've seen in a game lately, but it was too short and the ending lacked any oomph. Operation: Flashpoint seems like a much better choice.

Other than that I don't have many opinions regarding this choices. This has been (for me anyway) a pretty boring year in terms of computer games. BCM is probably the best game I've played all year.

Heh. And just look at their explanation for choosing IW2 as best space sim. Did they even play the game, or just read the box synopsis?

Well, there's one the biggest reasons why I don't visit Gayspot any more. CGonline.com and Womengamers.com remain, in my book, the two most trustworthy online review sites available today. Gayspot isn't even worth their weight in horse sh...

I agree, although Womengamers reviews are few and far between.

Hehe. Gamespot may not be the funniest or the best slammer of bad games, but they're generally good at it. Here are my favourite quotes from the Worst Games reviews:

Review of Survivor: The Interactive Game

Even the name is a giveaway--when a game publisher has to remind you that its game is "interactive," chances are it only barely meets the minimum requirements of that adjective.

Review of Akimbo: Kung Fu Hero

Calling Akimbo: Kung-Fu Hero a lousy platform-action game would be an insult to lousy platform-action games everywhere.

Review of Mayday

The unit pathfinding is so bad as to resemble a Monty Python parody of pathfinding, where units that are told to move from one point to another in a straight line with no obstructions choose to turn in circles and wander off in the opposite direction.

Review of Mission: Humanity

Oh, the humanity!

Review of Vietnam 2 (this is a must read review for laughs)

The environments are uniformly bland. You'll visit giant stone forts, sewers, narrow valleys that represent outdoor areas, and lots and lots of tunnels in which the Vietcong have apparently hidden their nation's supply of crates.

Hmm, I'm surprised they didn't give BCM a final whack and give it the worst game award.

Oh, and this is my 500th post, is it? Well, w00t for me!
