Help: Reading old hard drive

Need some pointers please.

Per the "Ships schematics" thread I have pulled the old 1 gig hard drive from the dead computer. I hooked it up to this one and tried to get some info.

Problem 1: It tried to boot from that drive. (win 95) Found all the devices (most of them). But I changed it to boot off the original.

Problem 2: Booting from the original Windows Explorer recognizes the old drive but shifts it to d: and the cd to e:. Not a big problem. But then I tried to copy files from the old drive and Win98 won't recognize anything. Says they are invalid files. In fact the files are displayed like this; bcLaYoUt.zIp. Almost every file is displayed as a mixture of caps and lowercase.

Problem 3: Change it back to boot from the old drive and let Win95 find everything. It operates but Windows Explorer doesn't see the original drive. Just c: and the cd rom.

The only thing I haven't tried is booting from the old drive and using an old AOL version to upload it to my web space.

Any other ideas? It doesn't have to operate well. Just one more time.

Can't give you a reason why 98 won't read the drive but as far as 95 not readig your new drive it could be if you have a old copy of 95 it will not recognise a FAT32 partition(but it should still see the drive(I think its been a while))

I think it'd be simpler if you boot off the old drive, and copy the file into a floppy, or if its big and you have cable or DSL, upload it or send it to yourself in an e-mail so you can retrieve it when you boot with your 98 drive.

As far as why it cant read it, it may be as emmet said, if its an old win95 it wont recognize the fat32 file system.

But if you can boot with the win95 drive and use win95 normally, it should be a-ok.

Get a CD-Burner and backup your stuff, makes the best solution

You have to setup one drive as the master and one drive as the slave (if on the same IDE controller). This involves playing with the jumper pins on one HDD (the old 1gig).
