Need help with ASUS 52Xmax CD-ROM

I've installed this drive into my wife's computer, after taking out an old one that was having problems. I've installed drives dozens of times so I knew what I was doing, but this time the BIOS won't recognize that a drive is connected.

I had the ASUS drive set to MASTER, and the CDRW drive in the computer set to SLAVE.

I swapped the two drives that are in the computer around (including the jumpers) and the same thing, the CDRW was recognized but the CDROM drive wasn't.

So I've determined that:

A: It's not the IDE cable

B: It's not the MASTER/SLAVE setting.

What else could be causing this behavior?

The drive is getting power, but when windows starts and you try to open the drive it loses power, but before windows has started you can open and close the drive all you want.

Problem Explanation:

Removed a previous CD-ROM drive in order to replace it with new ASUS model. Jumpers set to (master) and drive installed as normal into computer tower, IDE cable to the back and AUDIO cable to the back from soundcard.

i.e. followed installation just like in the manual.

Booted up computer ÔÇô all IDE devices detected except for Secondary Master (Asus CD-ROM) ÔÇô Windows does not detect CD-ROM drive either.

Rebooted, power lights were on in CD drive, constantly blinking.

Clicked to open drive during BIOS check, drive detected by BIOS, computer freezes.

Reboot. Went all the way to windows, CD Drive not detected.

Reboot. Clicked ÔÇÿopenÔÇÖ button during IDE Bios Check, drive detected ÔÇô computer freezes.

Reboot, went to windows, CD Drive not detected in BIOS or in Windows.

Any thoughts?

Hey $ilk have to agree with Kartoffel on this one doesn't sound to health for the drive.

Could be a firmware/bios issue with the board/drive though - although rarely see firmware for CDR's - seen a few for CD RW's alright though.

Try the drive in your pc to be sure though, see if have the same problems

Fixed it by unplugging the audio cable from the drive... tried it to see if it would make a difference and it did.

The only reason I see why it would've been a problem is if my MOBO had shorted on the audio connection...

Regardless it's working now. Just have to leave the audio cable unhooked.
