DraconisRex Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 Anybody know of any weight-loss programs that don't require bootcamp, fasting, two-gyms, and/or hospitalization to actually lose weight? Because of old Army injuries in my knee and my elbow, I can't run, walking hurts, and push-ups are a literal pain. I gotta take off about 50-pounds, soon, but need low-impact excercises to get enough weight off to where running may eventually become a possibility. I know the motto "No Pain, No Gain," but there is a vast difference between pain and "you're damaging equipment." Suggestions?
Kevin Trotter Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 Ditto. The best low impact aerobic workout there is , plus if you live near a big city chances are you may have an indoor public pool that is cheap and well maintained.
Guest Grayfox Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 without poo floating in it. i have 2 bad wheels due to a service connected accident. running, kneebends, etc are pretty much out of the question. hell even extended walking flares me up pretty bad... i look like stone cold when i wear my braces lol. swimming is best, if you can swim. those aerobic ab machines do work if you get the right ones. they burn fat and get the pulse rate going.. all while sitting on your arse. as for working the legs... all i can do is what my VA ortho doc said... he gave me this huge rubber band and told me to put one end around a chair leg, and the other around my ankle and raise my leg either straight back, or straight out to the side. it helps keep my knees as strong as they are going to get, and it does help relieve the pain somewhat... just a few suggestions.
Epsilon 5 Posted December 17, 2002 Report Posted December 17, 2002 swimming indeeds seems to be your solution. it's relaxing, and use alot of energy. Swimming use pretty much all your muscles, and the generally cold water forces your body to continusly heat up your body, thus burning fat. just make sure to lower your sugar consuption, or you'll nullify your efforts
DraconisRex Posted December 17, 2002 Author Report Posted December 17, 2002 Okay, I've called the YMCA, but have to wait until Jan 1 unless I want to pay $50 more for the account setup. Nothing personal, but I like saving my cash for more important things, like computer parts... Actually, we're going on vacation next week *IF* the cash is what we expect after the US Mofia has collected its protection money. Won't know until Friday.... But I will be taking the water aerobics after a couple of weeks of simply getting the muscles active again, by swimming (more like walking at first), rubberband/chair routines, some weights, etc., but all of this follows simple warm-ups. Thanks to all that responded -- any other suggestions I should think about?

Raven Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 Develop a taste for extremely spicy food that you can only eat a very small amount of. It works, at least most of the time. I eat jalape├▒o peppers out of the jar, though I might have to get something a bit hotter soon.

If I followed that instruction, he'd be replacing my stomache in a month... (Goat stomaches are a lot smaller, though, and take awhile to stretch out.... Forced diet... Let me think about it...)
Raven Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 LMAO See, I told you it was a good plan
Charles Lindsey Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 quote:I do. When I get full. That's the problem. You're full before you think you are. I gave a winkie/smilie when I said push away from the table but it's the gosh awful truth. The only way in the world to lose weight is to use more calories than you consume. Whether you choose to use more by exercise and eat the same or stay sedentary and eat less is up to you. I recently lost 5 pounds just by cutting out sodas during the day. Took me three weeks. Instead of drinking two liters of soda a day I switched to drinking a big sports bottle of water that I re-filled several times during the day. Lay off bread. We were not made to eat bread. Consult your doctor.
Guest Remo Williams Posted December 18, 2002 Report Posted December 18, 2002 quote:Lay off bread. We were not made to eat bread. Indeed a good thing to do if you want to lose weight. What works the best for me is a high protein, low carbohydrate and low fat diet. Also instead of eating 3 large meals a day I eat 5 or 6 small meals a day and drink lots of water. Then make sure you get plenty of exercise to burn those calories as Charles suggested. Swimming, walking; or what ever your body can take. I have lung disease so exercise isn't one of my favorite pass times either. I still manage to walk 1 mile three times aweek even if I have to drag along my oxygen tank.
Guest Grayfox Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 hmmm maybe i should lay off the guiness then??? thats like drinking a loaf of bread... got the guiness keg to go with it... its just i dont give a shite what people think about it lol. does that zantac stuff work???
DraconisRex Posted December 19, 2002 Author Report Posted December 19, 2002 quote:Originally posted by Grayfox: does that zantac stuff work???The prescription stuff works better. I can buy a month's supply of the generic at Walmart for $10, in non-prescription strength. Zantac 75 costs $5 for a 3-day supply, and the Pres. St. is more than twice that. So long as this is working, I'd say to heck with that idea....
rworbey Posted December 20, 2002 Report Posted December 20, 2002 1. DraconisRex, I suggest you ave a look here for a cabbage soup recipe - or search the web as there are varients. The diet works - at least my wife & I both lostweight when we tried it, even without sticking to it fully. 2. Grayfox, Zantac (now available under the generic drug name Ranitidine in the UK - i.e. the patent has expired) works for me most of the time. If you have chronic heartburn and/or suspect an ulcer, get a blood test - 90% of stomach ulcers are caused by an excess of a bacterium, h. pylori IIRC. Hope this helps. Richard

Guest Grayfox Posted December 20, 2002 Report Posted December 20, 2002 heh thanks richard. i dont have heartburn or anything, i was just curious if it worked
Guest $iLk Posted December 20, 2002 Report Posted December 20, 2002 I'm doing Atkin's diet. A friend of mine has lost 35 lbs in 7 weeks, and continues to drop. I've lost several lbs in just a couple weeks.
Gallion Posted December 20, 2002 Report Posted December 20, 2002 There is only one way to reduce weight: Lower Caloric intake (carbs) and increase physical activity. Hard to increase physical activity with bum knees (I feel the pain of 20 yrs of ground punding), try the bike routine. Better to use a real bike than one that you pedal for ever and never get anywhere. Get with the program hunky-chunky TTFN
Epsilon 5 Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 quote:Originally posted by Gallion: Better to use a real bike than one that you pedal for ever and never get anywhere.Yeah, but at home, it's never too cold, never too ot, and if you're tired you don't have to find that you're 30 kilometers from home - Someone who rides a bike to go to work in the winter slush
