If the cause is different, it won't. Having said that, I personally have found the effectiveness to be variable. If I have a really bad attack, I sometimes have to resort to a dose of sodium bicarb. (liver salts, or whatever), followed by 150mg of Zantac/Ranitidine, followed by a dose of Gaviscon (which, from the ingredient list, looks to me like a buffer solution).
