I agree, although I will get freelancer because I love privateer, XP1 definately makes BCM even better with more gameplay features that freelancer just can't top. Commanding a ship is a lot more fun than flying a fighter. This neuronet thing in freelancer is just what a previous post stated that its "combat on rails" and since freelancer's gameplay is about simplicity, a lot of people will probably use it. Besides, is the neuronet exactly the same as the AI in BCM anyway? Well in any case the space sim genre will live on and hopefully never die.

MS know that with the amount of time it has been in development, coupled with the amount of money spent, they HAVE to make it a mass market title or they're not going to make any money on it. At this point, I'm quite certain that MS would be happy to just recoup their dev costs.

All this begs one question:

Will you try Freelancer, SC?

(Do you play games, or just write them?)

I'll probably try it, after I hear enough from others to see if it's worth it. (if and when it's released at any rate).

I find it highly dubious that it could compare to BCM for long term playability though.

In fact, BCM may make other space sims just seem too hollow for me. I guess time will tell there.

Cool.

Do you play BCM at all for fun? Or it it a bit too close to you for that? (My guess would be the latter I suppose).

Oh please don't say it's true! The film blew bad enough and, as a rule, TV shows based on films just don't cut it (SG1 ain't too bad though)

Neither is Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

On a (sort of) related topic, Chris Roberts has formed a new company:

Ok, what's REALLY sad is the Kilrathi in the game movies looked better than the ones in the MOVIE. Aren't MOVIE characters supposed to look better than ones from computer games, due to the entire budget being centered on the MOVIE? I hope if Chris Roberts does a TV series that it actually looks GOOD.

Graphics looks sweet and the interactive universe is a cool thing, but controlling a fighter in combat with a mouse, and not even like Bang gunship elite or Ace of angels... sheesh...

And nothing but fighters...

I agree. And that bit about the fighters is whats puzzling. But this preview so far is the best to date - and the last two paragraphs say it all.

As for the control scheme;you never know, it might just work. I'm going to take a wait-and-see approach before passing final judgement.

Anyway, apart from the cut-scenes and the fact they they have different worlds; I can't think of a single critical feature in Freelancer that BCM doesn't already have. And of course XP1 (which will probably ship around the same time), will raise the ante in the graphics dept.

Yes, boys and girls, come Fall, we're going toe to toe with Freelancer and the MS marketing behemoth (which didn't help Starlancer one bit).

I don't care for the idea of using a mouse for control flight control.

Joystick for flight control and the mouse for craft management.

Never have, never will. This is theone thing that would preclude me from acquiring this title.

you aint lying. and what about the cast in WC 3? my god! Mark Hamill, John-Rhys-Davies, Malcom Mcdowell,Ginger Lynn (porn star!), Tom Wilosn etc etc... and the kilrathi looked 10 times better than in the movie. Im sure if Chris Roberts does the directing, it should be worth the time

I for one wish Cris Roberts would come back to the gaming fold.

No slur intended to Mr. Roberts, but I don't know of one project he's done outside the gaming industry that's been worth watching. The WC cartoon was dumb, the WC film rotted, and seems we are all at least in general agreement here.

But I still play his games! Though there were other good space sims before his Wing Commander, (Starflight!!!! (anyone heard about Starflight 3? It's nearing completion I've heard), Elite), Wing Commander did as much for the genre in it's time as BCM is doing for it now.

The genre, and we gamers, need him back. And I think he needs to return to his roots, since that's where he enjoyed success. Chasing dreams is all well and good, but he already had one dream in hand!

But then, what do I know. Just an opinion.

did he even have a hand in the movie? and i dont remember the cartoon lol

Grayfox,

The cartoon was on TNT for a while, that much I remember. I don't think it made it past a season. I didn't make it past the first episode. I think it's name was Wing Commander Academy.

On the WC movie, yes, Chris Roberts directed.

Well someone screwed with Chris Robert's storyline or funding or something in that movie. It wasnt even CONSISTENT WITH THE GAMES. The pilgrims? *WHAT PILGRIMS*? Hopefully Roberts will have more autonomy on the next movie. Wing Commander 3 rocked. First game with video cutscenes I ever played and I still enjoy it.

The game industry may have a few morons in suits, but the film industry has an ARMY of morons in suits.

I would be willing to bet a hundred million dollars that when Chris went to hollywood he was surrounded by a bunch of idiots who had never played his games, had no idea about what made them special, and basically took what could have been a phenomenal movie and turned it into crap.

Wait for Battlecruiser : End Game, the movie based on my creation.

Not saying anything else at this point; so don't ask.
