Children of Dune

I'm curious if anyone watched the miniseries and how it was recieved. I loved it having read every

original Dune book except Chapterhouse. I know some people have said it was too slow, but I thought they did an excellent job of portraying the political intrigue, religious overtones and the sweeping scope of what those books are really about.

The martial art scenes were done really well and having an actress of Susan Sarandon's calibre

really added luster to a mostly unknown cast. Plus the women in the cast were on the whole pretty hot and thats always a good thing.

If this is representative of what SciFi is trying to do I like it. Add to that an imaginative director like Alex Proyas doing Farmer's Riverworld and it seems they have come a long way in the area of Made for Tv films. There is a big difference between Dune and Roswell:The Aliens Attack.

well ive read the first 2. ive got the 3rd (children of dune) but havent read it yet due to the fact im reading about alexander the great... being almost finished with it, i cant wait to get my hands on the 3rd installment...

I'm wondering if anyone has read the three prequels written by Frank Herbert's son and Brian Anderson,

House Atriedes , House Harkonnen and House Corrino.

While they lack the scope of the original series it is more accessible in a straight forward sci-fi kind of way. It tells a back story on the major characters

and what motivated thier actions in Dune such as Gurney Hallock , Duncan Idaho as a really good primer on the Benegesirit sisterhood. Would really like to see SciFi do a prequel miniseries

how much more in depth about gurney does it go? all i remember from the first book is that he was a prisoner of the harkonnens, and they gave him that scar on his face, and hes had a dislike for them ever since...

it also surprised me in the second book how duncan "came back" and he and alia hooked up... does that carry on in the 3rd book as well? still havent read it yet, but im just curious.

In the prequels it tells of Gurney being a farmer whose family is slaughtered by the Harkonnen and his sister being sold out to miners as a prostitute. It also discusses how Duncan came to be a great warrior and that he killed his first Harkonnen as a seven year old boy who was hunted for sport. They really go into detail about how Duncan trained at an elite military academy to be the leader of House Atraides royal army. As far as how he is reincarnated*spoiler warning* lets just say that Duncan outlives all of House Atraides. (see Dune Messiah and Children of Dune) The stories of Duncan and Gurney weigh heavily in House Atraides and House Harkonnen. (Fox, check your PM)
