Guest $iLk Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I've been depressing over something for quite some time... no it's not what you think it is. As I sat there reading my latest store bought copy of one of the PC magazines... I realized that it has been nearly 2 and a half to 3 years since I had made any signifigant upgrades to my computer... or to any technology in general... I mean... how am I supposed to accept the way Universal Combat... or Neverwinter Nights appear on my current setup... I mean 1GB of DDR RAM is cool... and a Pentium 4 2.0A isn't bad... but a GEFORCE 3??? I mean aren't those crates in Counterstrike supposed to be less pixelly? THANKS FOR NOTHING NVIDIA!!! And a Plextor 24X CD Burner? Hardly!!! I lost the first two seasons of Scrubs after my last format you piece of crap! I shouldn't have to burn 40 CD's to save my TV Shows!!! How many countless episodes of Star Trek or South Park have been written over every time I format? 120GB hard drive I may have... but it's a curse I tell you!!! But I'm working pretty hard to save up money... but I obviously couldn't afford the upgrades I needed... and my meager $60.00 from the I.R.S. isn't going to help very much... But lo and behold... 18 month NO-INTEREST financing at BEST BUY!!! I received my new BB card in the mail the other day... and it came with this nifty coupon... So I'm greedily clutching my coupon as I enter the store... and I dumbfounded the confused employees who stared openmouth as I listed off my demands... "Make haste ye wankers and take me to your computer manager!" I picked up: Kodak EasyShare DX6440 Digital camera (4.0 MP) Camera Pouch 128MB Memory stick Plextor Internal DVDR+-RW Burner 50 DVDR's ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ATI TV TUNER with Remote control I was forced to put back the flash thumb drive and the other useless things I tried to grab... with a ballpark figure of about $1200.00 So if anyone is interested in purchasing an Asus Geforce 3 Deluxe or a Plextor Plexwriter 24/10/40A you are MORE than welcome... (Don't worry I'm not neglecting my other responsibilities in life - I've not purchased any personal purchases for some time now and have some extra B-day money left over) So slap me if you will... but understand when you see Dubya on the news later this week talking about how strong the economy is... just you remember - That was me... that was me.
Charles Lindsey Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 You idiot. Credit cards are THE WORST. I speak from experience. I am still paying off a home equity loan I got to pay off a ton of credit card debt. The minimum payment will take me 13 years to pay and cost $14,500 in interest alone. 1200/18 month = $66.66 per month to pay it off. And you had better pay it off before the 18 months. Many of those cards will accrue interest from day one if you haven't paid the interest by the time the interest free period runs out. Just take care with it and be careful. The camera does sound nice though. I took mine to New Orleans and then had a set of pics I emailed to all who went.
Eclipse Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I agree with Chavik, depretiating items are bad things to finance. Now if you can pay if off before the 18 months, then go right ahead. That money can make you interest instead of Best Buy. Heaven help the poor soul that gests stuck after the 18mo.
Charles Lindsey Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 That was a friendly "you idiot". I wouldn't wish my debt problems on my worst enemy.
Kevin Trotter Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 Ditto,The wife and I cleaned up our credit and bought our home eight years ago and lo and Behold, here come the credit card offers! I came home one day and found a preapproved 10,000 dollar platnium card. Before i knew it we had six cards and was 63,000 dollars in debt! After much harranguing, handwringing and with the help of Comsumer Credit Counseling service, we've been able to cut that to 13,000. We do not have ANY credit cards, getting by using debit cards. I thankfully have found a few places that accept layaway and for really big purchases save up or wait for Tax refunds. I will never have another credit card again and caution anyone from this latest form of economic slavery.
Guest $iLk Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 I just got done financing a Laptop from Best Buy - got it paid off in 11 months on a 12 month financing plan. I'm very particular about budgeting my money... and while I know this adds about $60.00 a month to my bills, I also know that I am extremely tight when it comes to most of my money so I have a reserve of money that I'm holding on to. Other than that: the ATI RADEON 9800 PRO IS A POWER HOG!!! I had to undo my DVD Drive and leave only the DVD Writer plugged in just for the damn thing to work. Took me 2 hours to hook everything in and troubleshoot my problems... And depending I might sell a DVD ROM drive as well... depends on how good my writer reads the ROM... The camera is sweet though... I snapped a few pics of myself in front of all the crap... my computer is gutted right now... being turned on and off with a screwdriver and wires hanging out everywhere. ASUS Geforce 3 Deluxe still for sale - http://www.dansdata.com/v8200d.htm Gives a good accounting... if you really want the 3D Shutter glasses and bundled games I'll have to search - but it has TV IN/OUT capability, and 64MB of onboard memory. It was the top card out back in 2001... and really gave me know trouble with any game up to and including Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow. If you are looking for a card to upgrade to - it's not a bad one as it plays pretty much any game that's out now without stutter.
Guest Fox__Trot Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 Yeah I need to buy a dvd-rom drive or perhaps a burner what'd the Dvd-Rw drive cost you?
Guest $iLk Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 It was about $150... I'm probably going to sell my DVD-ROM drive because it's redundant unless I want to copy a DVD which I have no plan to do atm. I also have my Geforce 3 Deluxe and Plextor CD Writer to sell... you guys have first dibs - then I'm gonna stick em on eBay to cover the cost of my upgrades... gonna be purchasing a new tower and power supply probably... hell why don't I just get a new motherboard and P4 3.0 ghz? Will see how the money situation looks after it stabalizes.
Charles Lindsey Posted April 8, 2004 Report Posted April 8, 2004 A credit card or two isn't bad. Just don't let the balances get out of hand where you can't handle the payments. Advice to all you young uns out there. What do you want for the cd writer? If you find echo's "advice" thread you might remember I mentioned my friend who has about worn her cd writer out as it is the only drive in the computer. Then again they are pretty cheap on pricewatch as well.
Guest $iLk Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 $60.00 + shipping and I will throw in Roxio Easy CD Creator 5. If you are wanting it for yourself - I live in B'ham also so I can meet you at the Galleria or the Summit if you'd like.
weegee_101 Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 What will you sell the DVD-Rom drive for? I'm looking to buy one since most new games have DVD versions coming out...
Guest $iLk Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 The DVD-ROM drive will be $50.00 + shipping - is that fair? Not sure what these are going for nowadays - twas around $80 when I got it - still works just fine - I'll throw in an IDE cable if you need as well.
weegee_101 Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 Hmmm, thats actually a little pricey unless its a combo drive... Whats the speed? And what brand/model is it? I can get a Pioneer DVD-114LG off of Price-Watch for 21 bucks, including shipping, sooo.... College budget, cheap equipment.
Guest $iLk Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 That's why I asked "is it fair" - I'll look it up on pricewatch by brand/model and figure out what it goes for. I'm pretty sure I was able to find one that allowed you to play regional DVD's without altering firmware but I'm not positive. I think it's Acer... and price will be relative to what's on pricewatch - because some things on pricewatch are from companies who won't deliver some of the times... although i lucked out and got WinXP pro two weeks before it was released from an OEM dealer... right before they went belly-up
Silk Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 Hey bud I was reading your post about all the new stuff you got for your PC and noticed your comment about all the TV shows you have lost on your HD. I was wondering how do you get the TV shows in the first place? Are you using your Comp like a Tivo or do you DL them from Kazaa or something? The reason I ask there are a few shows I would like to get and wanted to know how hard it is to get them. Thanks for the info and maybe we can try out that Starcraft soon?
Guest $iLk Posted April 10, 2004 Report Posted April 10, 2004 Downloaded from Kazaa from people who had TIVO'd them... although I have a TV tuner now myself so I can do it. I've got to get my kids for easter - so I might not be able to Starcraft this weekend. But will definitely be able to next week.
