LostInSpace Posted July 16, 2005 Report Posted July 16, 2005 I picked up my first ever home broadband router on thursday, I wanted nothing fancy just something to hook up to the system and get it up and running fast and simple. Here's what I got Netgear RP614 v.3. It's very similar, in features, to the D-link 604 except that this one also has SPI whereas the D-link does not. As you can see I did some homework on this but I missed one thing. I got the router so I didn't have to use a software firewall anymore, turns out that this router (as most) only block incoming traffic not outgoing. I came by this information reading a few tech sites and they mentioned this fact about most routers just blocking incomming traffic but they only suggested the continued use of a software firewall for outgoing traffic. Blimey, there's goes that idea of not having to use a software firewall. My question is, is there a way to cleverly finagle this thing into blocking outgoing traffic. Right now I'm still using Zone alarm with the router but I turned all the things off in zone alarm that the router handles and am just using it to block outgoing traffic. I want nothing coming in and going out that I didn't give permission to. Any suggestions? BTW: One of the other reasons I got the router is when I upgrade my computer soon (it's another thread in this topic area) I'm going to use the current one I'm using to build another computer for friends and family members that come to visit. This way they have access to the DSL as well. Thanks in advance for any help and insight. I also, in my search came across this nifty site Shields Up. It checks how stealthy your system is. Guest Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 That shields up is a cool link, I try and do that about once a month or so, just to see how good my router is. My computer is stealthed as far as it is concerned, it cannot reach it. Pretty cool...

Anyway, from what I can gather so far, yup you still need some sort of software firewall to block outgoing access. Now I just need to find one that has a smaller foot print on the system than the hog that is Zone Alarm. One that kept popping up was one called Tiny Firewall. I don't know why, after all this time, the router companies can't implement that in there products. I always like one product one solution ideology.
