TacOps improvements (in my opinion)

Oh man, got v2.0 (plus patches) and im enjoying the hell outta it!. For the first time I was able to use the TacOps to its fullest capacity (it crashed in v.1+).

After planning out and executing a raid on Pixan while enroute to Wraith HQ, I noticed that the one thing this game DESPERATELY needs is a feature to turn off/on the ship's names and designations from the TacOps computer so you can SEE what is happening!

All I could see was a garble of letters superimposing each other.

The other thing I noticed that needs attention is the target-designation system.

If 12 ships of the same class arrive on a region, you have no way of saying which is which in your target list.

Therefore I'd suggest that the player be able to select ships by cliking on them and designating them as "targets"... just like the FATAL, but in this case its only for display purposes.

OR each ship entering the region could have a number attached to it. Something like

"Terran/Military Galactan Battlecruiser (1)"

Mandorian Military Starcruiser (2)"

"Terran/Military Solarian IC (3) "

and so on.

The numbering could be determined by the order in which they appear in the region.

Finally, alternative would be to self-designate targets in a separate list. Select one ship, press shft-something and a little pop-up screen would ask you for a designation for that ship.

Example:

You clik on a Gammulan Cruiser. game asks you to enter a designation this way:

"Designate Target as: Gam/Mil:Cruiser ****** "

Where **** would be the player's input.

Then, this ship would be displayed in the target list as "Gam/Mil:Cruiser ****"

or in a separate menu :-).

Tac, I don't know about you, but I'm going fast and furious in the game. I don't have time to type in designations for particular craft. But, then, I haven't had your problem. I haven't had a time when it was anything but easy to target/track a particular craft...

Perhaps I'm doing something different. What targeting steps are you taking?

I must agree with Ron here. What many are forgetting to do, in TacOps, is use the Mouse to it's fullest potential. You can use the Mouse buttons (Left to Zoom In, Right to Zoom Out) to accurately select targets, then use the BC or other Craft tabs to assign as targets. Only takes a few fractions of seconds to accomplish this. Pretty Easy in my book.

Really? I never even thought to try the declutter.

An interesting point concerning being able to tag ships for future reference. I assume that's how the priority list works, but mine just fills up with all of the ships I've targetted in the past. I've not sat down and learned how to use it, yet, though. Will get around to it...*grin*.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Forgot the TTD!!!!! (holy crude!!!!!)

I manage in my targeting folks, its just that i'm the kind of person that likes to make coordinated attacks. And that cant be done if you have to order one ship at a time can it? (well, unless you have it planned with waypoints and stuff, but in the heat of combat...).

Oh man, cought like a newbie in the TTD thing! *shame*. :-P.

Back in the SDF Academy, reviewing...

When you are in TACOPS Tac, there is a thing called a HOLD button. Press Once and walla! Time is stopped thus allowing the leasurely placement of waypoints, etc.. No rush, no hurry, no pressure <g>

The Advanced version of Fleet C&C in the sequel has over 30 additional features, some which include the ability to set waypoints and orders for any object under fleet control, the ability to break them up into fleet wings (with a leader) and five levels of priority so that you can put ships in priority lists depending on what you want to do with them. This takes the place of 'tagging' ships which would be tedious and confusing.

The lite version of Fleet C&C, as I mentioned in the docs, it nothing compared to the advanced version. Nothing. It is as different as v2.0 is to v1.0. Think about that for a minute.

I thought the "hold" button froze the image, not the game. Im reading the manual again so dont flame me if this is incorrect!!!!!!! hehe.

Oooh boy, 30 new things to toy with in TacOps? :-).

Hey Derek, any chance of including the Player fleets Starbases in this version? Or even better yet, allow us to submit to you bases/cities/outposts/etc on different planets/moons (just so you dont have to make em!) and be included in any future patch? :-).

What about a scripting system a la Baldurs gate? Would that offload the CPU? Just a lof of IF and ELSE to control an IC, the BC, or ATVs?

Custom made scripts for kamikaze interceptor, cap interceptor...

Maybe someone already suggested something liek this, but would eb good if you could chage the TacOps view to your other support ships too, not only to probes you have launched *g*, that way you could really use them for farscouting.

Already done that TC. <G> a quick alt F"X" to whatever ship you are using and then a quick alt s to tacops and voila there you have it. smile.gif You have to know the route but this works great.

Of course as you suggest it would be nice to have it available from the drop down menu off the TLM in tacops would be nice too but try that workaround.
