  1. Woohoo!!! Thanks, Remo - SC, don't bother replying, I'm just getting caught up with the forums from this weekend (as usual) and read this before I read the countdown to gold thread, which answers all my questions...
  2. quote: A new demo, focusing purely on first person combat action, will be out in about two weeks quote: I'm not releasing another demo until the game is actually out and in stores. Should we be reading something into those two quotes of yours, SC?
  3. SWEET! No more VCF! Um...I'm not going to know what to do in the mornings. Maybe look for a life? j/k quote: Actually Derek responded to an earlier post that once it goes gold internally he will be keeping it a secret. Today and tommorow perhaps he will be tweaking several small things and mastering a copy. Gold announcement will come after that as it is rushed into manufacturing and the first units will be shipping on or before the current ebgames ship date. I'll see that, $ilk, and raise it that I remember SC saying that he was going to clean out the VCF for the release candidate and resume it for the MP patch. So in other words...my poor memory may be leading me toward yet another airlock, huh? Either that, or SC tried some HTML bloatifier other than Homesite and got so frustrated he nuked the poor thing.
  4. quote: tell me how you put a fixed width on the boards and cells I may be able to assist you there. Look at the HTML source code for this page, for instance. You will find, in the TABLE tags, TR (table row) and TD (table data, or cell) tags. One of the attributes you can attach to the TD tag (along with the TABLE tag itself) is the "width" attribute. You can give it an absolute width, which tells how many pixels wide the cell can be, or as a percentage of the table width, which means that the cell will try to occupy the given percentage of the overall table width. I think browsers are allowed to adjust these slightly for display purposes. Anyway, you will notice that the forum screen uses a percentage width on its TD tags of 18% for the first cell (our name & "rank"). This means that as you adjust the width of your browser window, the cell will adjust width too (it isn't "fixed") but will maintain a width approximately 18% of the total width of the table its in. Examples (Epsilon 5, look in the HTML source for this page for the text "LOOK HERE E5", my table code begins shortly below it): With TD width="25%": 25% cellfills up rest With TD width="50%": 50% cellfills up rest With TD width="75%": 75% cellfills up rest[ 09-19-2001: Message edited by: Joel Schultz ]
  5. Oddball VCF question for SC: I like the VCF's structure and function. Is that being created by some application from a third-party vendor, and if so, whom? Or was it a home-grown application you cooked up for managing it? Or perhaps I'm mistaken and the management application is "ye old Windows Notepad" (I checked the HTML source and didn't see any "branding")? [ 09-18-2001: Message edited by: Joel Schultz ]
  6. Sorry to hear you were burgled; we were once - while we were asleep at home! (forgot to close garage door) - and they got away with a VCR. Now, we have a security system, and have accidentally set it off enough times I'm sure the whole neighborhood know we have it... You know, depending how old your parts were you can probably get them somewhat cheaper now than when you first bought it. As for graphical problems: your Asus mobo had a VIA KT133 (Asus A7V) or KT133A (Asus A7V133, also my mobo) and a Radeon. There are known graphical issues, you need to download drivers from Viatech to correct this problem. Dunno if that is the cause of your particular issue; the driver fix was made because that particular chipset/card combo could cause the computer to randomly freeze.
  7. I love that "newbie" one - that's got to be the funniest smiley I've ever seen! But I can't get the link to work either.
  8. I agree, generic hardware in general can be a bad thing and I've been burned myself once or twice. The only generic hardware I personally have any faith in is my keyboard. FYI, Autorun has nothing to do with generic CDROMs or weird burning techniques or funky encryption schemes (that I'm aware of, at any rate). All Autorun is is a (human-readable) text file called autorun.inf that directs the OS (be it Windows, MacOS or Linux) to do various things on detection of the insertion of a CD, provided the OS was told to do anything at all on detection of the insertion of a CD.
  9. Peace, SC, everyone. I'll try to keep my thoughts a little clearer next time around and (hopefully?) avoid a replay of this. It seems I was reading this morning without really reading/comprehending. Please chalk up my lapse to still-rattled nerves from yesterday's attack. And, to echo Urza's sentiments, thanks for continuing to update the VCF for it's avid readers like myself who still manage to ask dumb questions anyway, and taking the time out to tell us so.
  10. Well, I was using real life to try to get a mental image of its range that I could relate to. And somehow, I totally didn't notice the Sabre rifle was for space. Wasn't paying the best of attention this morning, it seems. Sorry.
  11. quote: Are you mad? Heeheeheehee. Yea... er, what? Oh, no, of course not. I just was wondering if that "km" was right and not a typo. 1000km struck me as a pretty huge distance. I mean, from Erie to Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania is probably ~160 km. I can't envision a rifle sight picking up a target even that far, let alone ~5x that distance. But hey, its the 31st century, who knows...
  12. quote: The Sabre rifle target sight can be used to identify targets like the LR12. The ident range is 1000km Um... whoa? I would've thought planetary curvature would kinda limit that. Sure hope you can't shoot 1000 kilometers. [ 09-12-2001: Message edited by: Joel Schultz ]
  13. Hey, we're up to 64 votes...out of 21000 or so. :/ Oh well, that's what you get for being late to the party. I bet if we can muster a little over 100, we'll actually bust out of the 0% bracket into 1% (if they round > 0.5% up to 1, that is), but there may not be time enough for that.
  14. quote: I just want to play as a slightly mentally ill marine. In other words, you want to be a "normal" marine? Why didn't you just say that instead? Nervous commander eyes his sleepless, unbathed and mutinous crew warily, regretting that 10 marines failed to prevent 2 intruders from destroying personel quarters...
  15. I think for my sanity's sake I'm going to try not to get too involved on this thread... (Hi, Sunanta, nice to see you in a science discussion thread again. ) My two-bit contribution: I think mathematics also admits the possibility of having negative energy as well. Einsteins famous "E=mc^2" IIRC is actually a simplified form of a more general equation, it being energy inherent in mass at rest (in some inertial frame of reference). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the general form for a mass in motion was something like "E^2=m^2c^4 + (momentum-term-I-can't-remember)", the point being that to solve for the left-side (E) you will get two solutions, a positive and negative square root. What this would mean in reality, I have no clue. If you could have negative mass and/or negative energy, what could you do with it? Say I had a 1g marble and a -1g marble in a massless box. What would be the measurable mass? 0g? In which case, would that mean I have an object without inertia? Which automatically would mean it moves at the speed of light, c (I seem to recall that massless particles either have to be at rest or at c somewhere). You know, why even stop at negative numbers? Equations are equations, and nothing says we can't try to plug in other kinds of numbers to see what gets pooped out. Could we have imaginary or complex mass/energy? Such as 3+4i grams (i = square root of -1). If I'm not mistaken, if you take the equations that give relativistic mass (apparent mesaured mass of a moving object as viewed from a "stationary" frame of reference) of an object, assuming a speed greater than the speed of light c, the result involves the square root of a negative number (I think at some point you divide by a term like sqrt(1-v^2/c^2), which becomes negative when v>c -- where's my physics textbooks when I need them?). In other words, an imaginary mass. What could this mean? [ 09-10-2001: Message edited by: Joel Schultz ]
  16. Well, we do have different planets and moons in BCM, with (one would expect) varying gravity. Maybe 200m is realistic on a world with lower gravity, like the moon? Certainly not on Jupiter (if you could stand on its surface, if it has one...)
  17. They're polling over at Voodoo Extreme again! quote: Which one of these massively multiplayer games are you most looking forward to?
  18. Well, if you want to find "FIXED" bugs (all bugs SC jotted in the VCF) any dev would simply tell you to do this (assuming your grep is the same as my grep): grep -c+ "FIXED" bcmver.html (472 lines match)
  19. quote: hehe, Joel has a point. I'll think about it, post-release. Remind me again after BCM ships, Joel. quote: Ooooopppssss.... This does not look good! (rp) Officer: Sir, long range radar just detected a potential Blooper field. Commander: Excellent. Nav, plot it on the chart for later report to the Supreme Commander. (/rp) Don't worry, I won't be forgetting this reminder!
  20. Yet another cool image thingy: If you are viewing an image and it's too big, IE will resize it (without distortion) to a size to fit in the window. Hover the mouse over it and a button appears in the LR corner to toggle it between "full-size" and "fit-to-window-size".
  21. quote: The future stinks! ...especially without restrooms. Eww.
  22. Hey, I don't know if this is the place to be doing this (or if I should be) but there's a minor typo in the appendix I downloaded. Maybe its been fixed already, but just in case: File: "crusiers.html" The first table that lists "ASSET CLASS", "ASSET TYPE" "CRAFT HIGH SPEED" etc. accidentally lists "MAX LNCH ALT (ft)" twice, when the first instance clearly refers to "MIN LNCH ALT (ft)". I just noticed this, SC, you said (bold mine): quote: WIP online appendix But you did say "suggestions welcome" too BTW, I like the way it looks. Plus the browser interface is easier to navigate than those Acrobat files were. Good work, you two. [ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: Joel Schultz ]
  23. quote: Take a look at Ebgames They still say 09-03-01 as release date! Oh, Lord, not another thread of this... j/k
  24. Could someone explain this "picture stealer"? How do you select the picture and only the picture?
  25. I like IE 6 too. There was definitely a speed improvement (I'm using NT 4.0). But did MS have to drop Netscape plugin support? Oh well, more security is better, I suppose. I DL'ed the ActiveX QuickTime control from Apple the other day, now I got to find an ActiveX Mod player plugin. Modplug seems to be a Netscape plugin On the other hand, you gotta love the built-in cookie filtering and privacy policy functions
