I just now cought up on the gist of what has been happening in the last, er, several weeks?!? ** shakes head ** a bit dazed... What a read! Had a RANDOM headed up the skirt and didn't even know it. Imagin my surprise if SC hadn't self-destructed that RANDOM and I attempted a post, only...couldn't. I would have been so confused I probably would have formated my hard drive and reloaded everything just positive that Microsoft O/S had FUBARed again. From another thread SC: quote:AGAIN?!?! Where the hell do you find the time? I'm soooooo jealous! I suppose you're not allowed to bring your laptop into the bedroom then? Absolutely NOT! 'Puters stay just outside the bedroom door. While they can be warm they are a bit lumpy to sleep with! I find time 'cause I'm not trying to re-write the universe in 5 days. Take a break SC--more then just a 2 hr. road trip! Sheesh.... You live only once so spend a little time w/ your daughter and missus. I know, I know, work is piling up while your out... Just put an auto-reply on your email that says "Out to Lunch" and let everyone guess as to what you really mean! I take a look at all the differences in personalities, backgrounds, cultural variences, English skills, people skills, writing ability, communication abilities, and more when no 2 people are alike it's a wonder the board runs as smooth as it does!!! SC, I have a lot of respect for you, and for multiple reasons. One of which is your ability and willingness to forgive, forget, and/or appoligize when mistakes are made. Sometimes even publicly when the incident occured privately. Many "leaders" are to insecure and are afraid their fan base will vanish if they show this "weakness". I'm glad things have been reconsidered and are being worked out and the board is still breathing. I don't frequent, even infrequently, any other boards simply because I don't care for the trash on them. I like the standard established on this board and the character of the leaders (SC and the other leading members). If it means knocking a few heads now and then, so be it. If it means shoving someone out a 1-way airlock, so be it. Hamblin, IMO, got what he asked for. quote:...it could be some kind of IT equivalent of post partum as someone pointed out via email Yup, that was my thought as I started reading though this fiasco. I've seen it. LOTS!! 5 Babies and 7 pregnancies.... Seems like the harder one works on some deadline the bigger the drop and bounce when the moment is passed. There, that's my dollar's worth. Inflation...get you every time.

Vehicle type can make a difference in staying on the road, but not that much. I've seen more 4X4 rigs, ALL shapes and sizes in the ditch, on their top, or on their side up here then any other vehicle. It has a set of Z rated Michelins and I haven't had any trouble keeping it on the road going the right direction. The dealer has a set of Bliztech snow tires on order for it. It also is a 5 speed, w/ ABS. It is actaully easier to drive in this weather then the Licoln was. Anyway, the 4X4 rig will come.... Mustangs and mini-vans don't do camping trips well...

Smart people check before leaping... Windows file. Leave it alone. If you want a second opinion, wait for someone else to answer or check the usual anti-virus web sites such as Norton's or McAffee. A guy I work w/ got one of those emails and he wiped the file just as the email said w/out checking around. He had to reformat his drive and reload it from scratch just cause he deleted that 1 little file... I don't remember which one it was. In otherwords, HE was the "virus", not the file. If you have a virus scanner, run it and have it scan that specific file. If you don't have a virus scanner, get one. Ok, I suggest you get one. [ 12-23-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]

The bad news for me is that I will have to live w/ a sub-par PC for BCM a bit longer....maybe even several bit longers. Not that any of you care but... Due to the untimely demise of my '87 LSC Lincoln (tranny quit) I was out a car. What to get w/ a family of 7? After looking at the numbers I was left w/ a mini-van (I wanted the Excursion but...)and I DESPISE mini-vans! Besides, I already own of them )&$@*^#*& things. I finally found the car I wanted but justifying it? After much frustration on my part my wife told me to get the car I wanted 'cause I needed a work car. So in this case I decided to obey my wife like a good little husband (don't ask twice rule) and got a.... '96 white w/ tan top, leather interior, Ford Mustang Cobra SVT Convertible, 305hp, 4.6L (280cid) V8 and, according to the SVT manual, 0-100 mph in 13.96 sec w/ a top speed of 153 mph. 'Course, it is the middle of winter up here in Alaska so there's no way to really test those numbers...(even if I did know how).

HI SC! AWOL?!? Of course... The answer is always YES when one doesn't ask. Anyway, it has been a very interesting summer, fall, and early winter. Most of them actually very good, but hectic. One of the "things" was the addition of #5 kid - Brianna Marie - Sept. 19th!! Now off to enjoy the results of your many sleepless nights!

quote:I just wanted to thank you, the testers and staunch fan base, for the support over the years and your dedication to this series. YOUR WELCOME!! Though due to the nature, quality, your dedication, and depth of the game this support base doesn't surprise me a bit. Now if you had made something like Windows and generated this kind of support I would wonder what kind of cult you where running. And thanks for letting me be a beta tester, even though I disappered around May for a bit, it was a GREAT experience... well, there was a time or two there when I screwed up...

Into The Fire Act Five - Operation Golgotha

[rp] As Savage is finishing his answer to Wold the briefing room door whisks open. Entering the room is a crisply dressed Ensign looking nervous enough to be on his first tour of duty. The Ensign was gently carring a heart-shaped silver platter. Upon this silver platter were 2 hot pink, heart shapped tea cups accompanied with matching dessert plates. As each step brought the Ensign closer to Savage, his face seemed to get more and more flushed. Upon reaching Savage he gently placed the plater on the table snapped to attention stating "Sir, here is the tea and crumpets you requested, Sir!" With that, he snapped a salute, about-faced and hastily headed for the exit. "Hummm, interesting taste there, Sir." quips Wold, "But I was being slightly sarcastic about the nukes. Obviously we can't nuke 'em because of the inocents that are there. Several points. 1. If we go poking around trying to find that TI building we may as well be dropping nukes 'cause that's how much noise we'll be making. Unless of course you expect to find an X marks the door for us in the first security hit? 2. As Akira is 4 kays buried, a nuke wouldn't hurt him. If they think that an Insurgent or human rescue is under way, they'll ice him. However, if they think a Gamm probe is occuring, EarthCom and GalCom will ignore Akira and counter where they think the probes are hitting simply because the Gamms have no apperent use for Akira. 3. Us Insurgents are mostly ID'd and are on the screwed list anyway. You and your cohorts aren't. Any of you get ID'd some morning you'll wake up in the slammer. Suggestion: We got enough Gamm crap from that attack on our transport that we can imitate several Gamm pre-attack type probes. Have your more trusted officers carry out these fake attacks, to cut down losses. Have the McKendrick's records show that she has been hunting those Gamms that trashed our ride. Just b4 the attack to the security have the McKendrick broadcast that a Gamm attack is immenent and patch through some 'tapped' radio communications from ground locations to prove this. EarthCom and Galcom would respond by going to full defense alert but won't leave their posts 'cause they don't know where the attack is coming from and the McKendrick will already be 'acting' at this hotspot. Have the McKendrick or ground team pop a static bomb to disrupt communications. To stir the pot more, have a probe emmitting a Gamm BC 'burst' out of the static area heading for a jump point. Meanwhile keep the McKendrick on the edge of the static to keep some comms coming through. Let the Insurgants and Mercs carry out your rescue plan of Akira. When the smoke clears it will appear that, in desperation, Rattler and the Insurgents teamed up with the Gamms to rescue Akira. Also, it would appear to EarthCom and GalCom that you and the McKendrick attempted to stop the rescue and just barely failed. As such, you and the McKendrick will be given the hero's welcome, instead of the guilotine." As Wold finished another thought crossed through his mind and all us Insurgents will be on the ground w/ enemy guns front and back... Is Savage really on the level in trying to get Akira rescued?[/rp] [ 07-27-2001: Message edited by: Wold ] -

[rp] A shiver ran down Wold's spine as the gravity of Savage's briefing on the TI sunk in. quote:You'll need to establish exactly where the TI facility is and take it out quickly. Every second is vital here people, so now screw ups and no picking wrong doors. We dont need any surprises here. This aught to be good. Take out the TI in short order or the mission is jeopordized and no one knows where it even is?? Wold was pretty sure he had dug a severe hole w/ Savage anyway so he stands and waits... With reluctance Savage finally nods to Wold. "Two questions.... First, you never answered my last question...did you want any coffee or tea?" There was an immediate cough and sputter as the question registered with Commander Foss who was taking and ill-timed drink of coffee. Without much pause, Wold continues, "Second, how are we supposed to 'quickly remove the TI' when we don't know it's location? Why don't we just nuke the area...., why don't we just nuke four or five EarthCom sites? Just add a little Gammulan chatter to the air-waves and they'll think the Gamms hit 'em. If we're going to knock we may as well KNOCK."[/rp] -
...and every brain fart we make!

Hey Chavik, you didn't include all the needed files in that zip package. Run memmaker from a dos shell (make sure the box marked "prevent program from detecting windows" is checked) and a file list will show up. Ecthelion II: I noticed that nothing is still being loaded in upper memory. Try removing the AUTO from the "DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO" line in the config.sys file.

Uh, correct me someone if I'm wrong, but I don't think that BC3000AD is freeware. There are some places that are selling CDs from 5 to 15 bucks. If you pick up one of these make sure it is ver 2.0 or newer. There are a couple of patches that need installed. Otherwise, get the BCM demo and play that.

Welcome aboard SpotSD! Point of FP mode in space? For Derek to know and you to find out.... Me guess, keep searching and the point shall be revealed in the future! NDA, NDA, NDA...... now what again was that acronym for????????

That's the program from msdos 6.x., maybe even ver 5. Every now and then it would error and end up in a cyclic reboot. I'll experiment w/ it. Ecthelion II , add that LOADHIGH in front of the C:ESSAUDIO.COM line. The other shouldn't matter 'cause once it's done scanning the system it unloads from memory. IF you are still getting the same results from mem /c then type the following at the prompt: MEM /C > C:MEMORY.TXT (enter) Now you will have a file called MEMORY.TXT that you can open w/ notepad. (From notepad File -> Open then type C:MEMORY.TXT then click OK) Copy and past the results here. [ 07-09-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]

I do remember that program w/ dos 6.X, but don't ever remember MS providing anything like that with Win9x. He is running Win98, so if you know of a util. that will do that, cough it up! IMO, you are right about the environment settings, the devices should be after the environment settings, but for some reason (or not) Compaq or ESS puts that driver 1st in the list. That was why I hesitated on having him move it further down the list... I could be wrong here, but HIMEM.SYS then EMM386.EXE must be loaded in that order and b4 the use of DEVICEHIGH. Ecthelion II, what is your available free memory now? From the mem /c? Your change to the autoexec.bat file should be ok as long as you put a space after the LH or LOADHIGH. Setting up your config.sys file in the order that Chavik listed is the clean way to do it. [ 07-09-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]

I LIKE! Nice contrast to the SS too...makes it easy to see. The only "suggestion" I have would be to move the F a little closer to the l in the Balor Fleet heading. All-in-all, great work! PS, I'm still on the archaic dial-up and it loaded just fine! [ 07-08-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]

That's what a .bat file is! And if you dbl click on it, it will run/execute. w/out the changes to the autoexec.bat file, run the mem /c and see if you have enough free memory. IF not, post the contents of your autoexec.bat file here and I or someone will look at it. To view/edit the autoexec file: (there are multiple ways) left click start, then run. Type in the command SYSEDIT and click on OK. The "system editor" will open w/ 5 staggard, opened files. The 1st 1 will be the Autoexec.bat, the 2nd will be the Config.sys. DO NOTHING TO THE OTHER 3 FILES. You can make changes to the files here and save them under the File menu at top left.

Verify that Windows, in all it's wisdom, actually loaded the correct mouse driver for your mouse. Check to see if there is an updated mouse driver from the mfg.

PER THE FAQs You are short on free memory....you need 614,400 bytes (600K) or more. You need to modify/edit your Autoexec.bat and/or your Config.sys files to free up more memory. On your config.sys file change DEVICE=C:ESSAUDIO.SYS to DEVICEHIGH=C:ESSAUDIO.SYS and move it below the EMM386 line. Change the Buffers=40,4 to Buffers=20,4 In your autoexec.bat file you can had LH or LoadHigh in front of command lines to move them into upper memory. After changes, reboot and then run the mem /c again and see if you are close to that 600K of free space. Also, set your DOS DPMI memory back to 16384 [ 07-08-2001: Message edited by: Wold ]

What is your largest executable program size for dos? left click start left click run type in COMMAND and left click OK at prompt type in MEM /C 3rd line from bottom will have 2 numbers at the end.... what are those 2 numbers? BTW, my wife has a presario 54XX compaq running essolo sound card. From sound setup I manually selected the essaudio drive set the I/O and DMA, IRQ was left at N/A. I was able to do a sound test and it (and game) worked fine....didn't have to manually edit anything. Just had to make sure that volumes were set from windows b4 i ran the test.

Great work Manchise! Looks like I should dig up a pic for you.
