Nomad- the aliens in this movie were after our water. They planted the tripods on the planet knowing they would eventually return to collect the resource and may need to do some exterminating. The red weed is used to collect the water. It's actually the same kind of story I would have done. I agree about the whole micro-organisms thing. It dosn't make sense no matter how you try to justify it. Microorganisms are the most plentiful and versatile form of life in the universe. My major complaints are with Spielbergs storytelling - he always errs on the cheery heroic side of things. With a few minor tweaks (amounting to maybe 30 seconds of altered footage), I could have made the movie seem far more gritty than it is. But like I've said, in 20-30 years, I swear I'll do it right... even if it's called something else. I want to see Earth loose - just once.

This is starting to look like a SciFi Channel original movie of the Anonymous Rex caliber. I weep for everyone involved.

The Pendragon version is absolute excrement. Do not waste your precious time or money on it. You've been warned.

Oh god no! That's like the potential cinematic equivalent of a hydrogen bomb. The most boring, monotonous, untalented director in the known universe tackling one of the most boring, monotonous, and uninspired game properties ever? Then there's that little story issue - not that having no story was ever a hurdle for Boll.

It's Peter Jackson's dream project and it really shows from the trailers. And King Kong has been remade way more than 3 times. Mighty Joe Young, for instance, was also another remake. I love that it's being kept period too.

Inherently, zombie movies are boring. You go to see them hoping to see some new creative uses for latex, pasta, and stage blood.

People will try to turn anything into a political weapon these days. I forgot to mention in my review - the new King Kong trailer is worth the price of admission alone. Between this, Batman, and the new Cursed Unrated DVD, I'm in movie heaven right now. And heck, I still have Serenity, The Warrior, New World, The Island, Brothers Grimm, History of Violence, Narnia, and King Kong to look forward to. It's a good year for film.

Ok so I've seen it TWICE. Steven, I woulda done it a little differently, but my GOD did you do a damn fine job. Especially the first hour... How this got a PG13 rating only god knows... this is probably the most hardcore PG13 I've ever seen. We're talking Shindlers List levels of terror and carnage here. I have but three minor complaints, submitted for your discussion pleasure: 1) The voiceover at the beginning of the film is done by Morgan Freeman. He may be a big name and all but the voiceover used in the first teaser trailer (some no-name voice actor) is actually far superior to the one used in the film. 2) The ending - they went with the books ending. IMO this was a mistake, I never liked that particular ending. I can't hold that against the movie though but it does come a little too abruptly. 3) Some of the smaller side-roles were rather poorly acted. For instance, an encounter with a news crew. And you thought Valve did a good job with Half Life 2... these Tripods are scary as hell. The sounds they make... the way they move... it's spot-on perfect. The cinematography is also spot-on perfect. The shots are mostly eye-level docudrama type stuff and it has the effect of putting you right in the movie with the actors. Those high crane shots, while they *are* in there, are used very sparingly. There were also a few parts where the audience started laughing at very sad situations (Cruise breaking down because he can't even feed his kids). I don't know if the audience was releaving pressure or being retarded but happened during both shows... it dosn't really matter much as far as a film review goes but I felt I should mention it (your audiences may act the same). Dakota Fanning's character can be a little annoying at times but she *is* the unfortunate beligerant product of a broken household. The part where she asks if it's the terrorists is particularly heartwrenching. In five words [or less]: GO SEE IT RIGHT NOW. 9/10 (docked a point for midmovie drag and abrupt ending)

The original japanese movie was pretty lousy. I can't imagine it could be made any better with a remake. I think one critic called it "The scariest movie about a leaky ceiling EVER." And that's about right.

I was terribly dissapointed with Sin City's violence. The comic was way worse and some scenes I really really really wanted to see werent in there. It was a pretty hard R but I wouldn't say it was quite NC17/Unrated material. I await the unrated Sin City DVD with bated breath

It *is* a zombie movie, SC. Basically it's about the same as the Dawn of the Dead Unrated version. I'd give it an 8 on the LOTR-SIN CITY violence scale. And I'd add that I was pleasantly surprised by how well this one was done. It's easy to tell that it's been censored like everything else these days, and that really gets under my skin. I'm of a mind that once you get an R rating, you should be able to do just about anything you want. Shaun of the Dead aside, this is the best zombie movie we've seen since the original Dawn. 9/10

Releasing High Tension here (in the US) was a mistake. Worse, they edited the living crap out of it (to make an R rating) - and dubbed about 25% of the film, in random parts, poorly. I'm perfectly happy with my original region 2 Switchblade Romance DVD. I also hope this teaches Hollywood a lesson (albeit a slightly different one) - don't screw around with our movies. We don't need - or want you to play our overbearing religious tv-hating grandparents. As for Land of the Dead - I've never really liked zombie movies. Even when it's gory they're all still just... zombies. Slow, lumbering, corpses. Not scary or terribly interesting. I've also sort of learned to ignore the "goriest movie ever" hype. It's always rubbish - the MPAA wouldn't let a movie like that slide with a *mere* R rating! They are sure to threaten you with the dreaded rubber stamp of NC17 doom. Zombies or no, R ratings don't allow for hardly any graphic violence these days. If there ever was a lot of gore in LOTD, you will only be able to see it on the uncensored unrated DVD. I'll wait till then. I'm not interested in watered down, sanitized, cockamamy horror films.

Yeah, it sort of fits in the with the nanotech theory. We'll have to wait and see. Also pay careful attention to all the numbers in this episode.

Ok, now I'm lost. I don't want to wait for Season 2. Crap. Well, at least this isn't HBO otherwise that would have been a "Natural conclusion" for the series.

ABC schedualed the Lost finale to run against the American Idol finale... on purpose! Wow, now that's balls.

They brought it back? Wow I thought it got cancelled. Watched a few episodes but I was sort of bored by most of the stories. I'll stick with Lost, since Carnivale is now dead it's the only reason to watch TV any more. Well, that and Iron Chef America.
