So could anyone suggest a trade route that isn't short-leg trade runs? (And doesn't run straight into really hostile systems...like I found out the other night.. ) I never really bothered to use the time acceleration mode if there is one in non-debug play, and I find it quite fun just to fly in realtime to distant systems.

why not pay www.theunderdogs.org a visit? They got lots of strategic games and its all abandonware/vaporware. The Rise and Decline of the Third Reich is for example pure strategy. (or The Operational Art Of War if you're looking for a "new" game.) But that's strategic as in military ops. Diplomacy is quite fun as for political, as is the simulations of political situations that some of the games listed on the underdogs are.. hope you find what you are looking for. I agree with Darkvenom. Use an old computer to set up a FreeBSD/OpenBSD/Linux gateway/Firewall and you're almost guaranteed to be "safe". And you get the ability to connect lots of computers to the net through one modem.. (yup, possible with windows98/2K too but...well...windows is windows... (BTW, Try SuSE if you're new to linux but interested in using it. Easy and can be configured to look like Win if you're used to that.)

What's happening to the PC gaming industry? Well, the hunt for money has become greater than the games they punch out. Like Silent Hunter II, a game I've been waiting for for almost two years now, and they set up a delay after delay after delay, and it wouldn't suprise me if the company that bought up SSI (that caused YET another great delay) went to the grave too and with that SH2. And even if the games get out, the servers aren't there forever, like Jane's matchmaking service, or the Tribes II servers. Lots of people played using it (jane's) but the company that held the server saw it as an "unneccesary server that noone use." guess that approximately 10.000 people is nothing these days.. I guess we're all lucky to have an independant person making the greatest space sim for us, since as I see it, BCM will come out (and with a blast!) unless Derek Smart dies. (good grief, may that NEVER happen! ) And this splendid community will keep the game alive, even if some nosy snot went bazookas with the servers and stuff and shut everything down just because they wanted to. um, this sound very hateful and weird when I read through it myself, but I hope you'll get the point... I'm tired of getting disappointed with game after game. (max payne f.ex.. what a joke...nice gfx but oh-so-short..)

What is it with people that doesn't read the included text files really? I understand that some don't read the manuals or extra file documentation before trying out the game, but seriously if they read them it would save a lot of time and effort.. (atleast after trying the game for a few hours..)

And after buying deflector arrays and sold them at pluto, buy Medibays and sell at galcom. But even better is to trade solar reactors from galcom to saturn (1 million per solar panel) or same trade from galcom to Genesis (orbiting the moon.) But all this is covered in another topic so have a look at that topic for more tips in how to get money. (which is too easy..

If you paid attention you would have seen I said that you had to apply a patch and THEN it will work. You can download it from here http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?id=2754 now, download the patch/fix from there, move it into your BC3K folder, and run it. Then set your .bat file so it doesn't include the /d1 option, then run bc3k. This time it shouldn't complain about the CD.
-
Yes, changing the .ini files to point the CD to the same directory as the free game works, IF you apply the patch that was made due to a corrupted introfile. (if I remember correctly.) After you installed that patch and set the CDrom dir correctly you can delete the /d1 option and it will run in normal mode.

Thank you for your help. After consulting the DB of already assigned name I noticed that the two shipnames I usually use in games weren't taken. So I settled for the GCV Von Braun and/or the Rickenbacker. (some of you may notice were those names come from...
-
Wasn't sure this was going to be a general discussion question or a BCM question.. so hopefully I've posted it in the right forum. I'm curious what names on the ship everyone uses. I know a lot of you have it written in your signature, but you must have had other ships than those. Personally my currently assigned BC is named the Intrepid. (oh, the originality.. not... And what is the Supreme Commanders ship named? (and the reason of this question? well, I'm not good at shipnames. And I'm loking for a good one for my BCM BC. "The clueless" is suitably on me, right?

"I must've found it then. I've been doing a lot of cargo sweeps in debri fields. Kewl I don't even know how to go into debug mode. No need to tell me. Thanks." If you are running the free bc3k v2.09 then chances is that you already run in debug mode. Examine your bc3k.bat file, if it got the /d1 on the last line then you're in debug mode. (or just press F8 while ingame, and if there is a lot of text printouts then you're probably running in debug mode.)

hehe, whatever.. I was just showing in a weird way my gratitude to the person that finally make a game that is FUN and that doesn't end quickly like all the games that are made in present time. I grew up with the C64 and Amiga computer and the game mentality from those computers are not the same as todays, where the purpose of a game is to sell well (in most cases) and not so much on story and detail, just eyecandy. yukk.. although I must say that BCM looks so real and beautiful when running it on a 22" screen in a perfectly dark room.

I looked at the download (and tried the link here) section and saw that these charts of the BattleCruiser isn't available any more. Is there a possibility that they will be downloadable again? I sure would like to see and have detailed floorplans of the BC.

this will sound like bootlicking, but Derek, You are the most respected and greatest gamemaker EVER, in my opinion. Not only do you release a version of the space game of my dreams for free, no you go even further by making an even better game of the same game, and then you stick with a printed manual instead of these awkward online manuals. Now that is something you don't see every day. [ 08-03-2001: Message edited by: desolator ]

Surviving spacebattles tactics
desolator replied to desolator's topic in Battlecruiser 3000AD (Legacy)
Thank you all for the tips, now I find it a LOT easier to survive almoset intact. -
I haven't found a post or information about this so I asume noone has asked... otherwise I am sorry to have asked this question: What type of manual will BCM include? A thick/thin paperbook or only as .PDF or something like that? (I haven't anything against the .PDF manuals that came with BC3K free release though, I'm just curious.)

Hi, I'm new to this board but I've been playing BC3K ever since the free version was released and I have a question that I want your opinions on. After roaming the net and this messageboard I still can't quite get it how to survive spacebattles efficiently. I usually launch the 4 interceptors and assign two to defend the BC and the rest to SAD, and then order the BC itself to attack some targets. I survive, but with severe damages to some systems. So what are your favourite tactics? And to Derek: (if you read this. a big THANK YOU for this game! I loved Elite and Frontier but they weren't alive like this game. So now me and my friends gather every weekend to play BC3K together, and its great fun! Albeit no multiplayer function its still the most played game at our LAN's.
