I suggest going over to ebay and picking up a cheap voodoo 3 card (PCI version). Then run a dual monitor setup.The second monitor can be super cheap, even an old VGA will do. I tried this once and it worked for me.The main monitor displayed the 2d graphics,and the voodoo 3 monitor displayed the 3d graphics. Think I had to use /g /v1 in the bat file.
