Getting off of this dang rock.

Any way to reduce Choppy ness in gameplay

quote:Originally posted by McSix: Oh well no worries it is really not that big of a deal. The demo of the new game coming out seems to run a lot smoother for me. I will just wait for that to come out.Don't let that fool you. SC released that Demo with A LOT of stuff turned off and in a relatively small universe compaured to the REAL game. If you're having processing problems with UC, believe me, you will have WAY more with UCAWA. Keep in mind that the Naval Assets will be turned on in this game PLUS all the new high poly count Graphics will mean that your processor will need to work DOUBLE TIME on the new one. As a matter of fact one of the main reasons SC is releasing UC Gold Edition is so that the people with Sub 2Ghz machines can have a new game too (Especially the new MP Kernal). One of the things that I can tell you that made a HUGE difference with me was upping my Memory, when I upped it from 256 to 512 that made a HUGE difference and when I upgraded to 1GB, that also made a big difference, but not quite as big as from 256 to 512. Increasing memory is one of the cheapest ways you can upgrade your machine. Keep in mind that Windows XP OS alone uses almost 200 Megs of RAM, leaving only a little over 100 Megs to run the game, so that means that the game is swapped out to the Hard Drive via Virtual Memory. Since your hard drive works literally almost 1000 times slower than your memory, then you will notice a performance hit. -

Might want to update your system profile ... your system has a lot to do with it. -
So SC what would be better, a Dual Processor system or a 64 Bit System?

That brings up a very good question: with two products coming out at pretty much the same time, how will MP be handled? Well, SC said that the Company will only "Officially" be hosting servers for various UCAWA scenarios, I guess the rest of them will have to be player hosted.

With Popcorn, DVD's and TiVo, Moviegoers Are Staying Home

quote:Originally posted by Race Bannon IV: The BL (that's bottom line for you squares out there) is that people are more boorish and ill mannered than ever,...I don't think that's it at all. Other than Star Wars, I can't even remember the last movie that I was "Excited" to see. I remember years ago it seemed that every year there was a BIG movie to see, like Titanic and Terminator 2. Mostly over the past couple of years I've bought DVD's of a lot of the older movies that I really liked. (Such as the Back to the Future Series) The main problem lately is the total lack of GOOD Movies. And they don't HAVE to be expensive (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) they just have to be GOOD. -
quote:Originally posted by Prez: Okay - true confessions time. I have resisted in the past the urge to join these forums because I have always felt I was not hardcore enough; i.e. I have a wife and kids, a 50 hour a week job, I'm a part-time musician, and just never had the time to devote to keeping up with the game news and developments and such. I always felt like I was in the dark. Well, I've taken the plunge, but I still have way too little time to devote to reading/sifting through forums looking for answers to questions I am confused about. I wrote the above because I will undoubtedly, sooner or later, ask a stupid question that I should have already got the answer to elsewhere in these forums. Hey, it might be right now, but here goes. Are UC Gold and UCAWA separate products? I have just read the info pages on both and I am almost certain that they are, but I wanted verification. Moreover, assuming they are in fact two separate products, which one do I want to get if I want a more complete, "hardcore" experience? Again, based on what I have read, it seems I want UCAWA. Hell, I'd have no problem buying both - I know the money would go to a good cause (SC pumping out more awesome games), but I have to admit I got confused around the time 3000AD (wisely) dumped Dreamcatcher. Please forgive my confusion - it seems I am a little too easily confused as of late Join the Club, I own 2 companies and usually work 12 hr days Mon-Fri & 4 to 6 Hrs. on Saturday, so it takes me A LONG time to do things in the game. It seems to me that UCAWA Will have everything that UC Gold will have, but in addition, it will have full control over Naval Assets, Improved explosion sequences and a few other enhancements that UC Gold Doesn't have. Both are being ported to DX9 Engine, but UC Gold won't require as hefty a Processor (1Ghz VS 2Ghz for UCAWA) Plus UCAWA will need more RAM. So if your Machine can handle it, I Say go for UCAWA, I'm getting both, so I can run UC Gold on my Office Computer (Which is only a 1.2Ghz) and the UCAWA on my Home Computer that has all the latest toys.

It had probably more to do with fragmentation than with the drive types. I have several computers and 1 of them has a Fat32 installation, everything works fine on that machine. -
And don't forget not to pick something too close to an enemy base, I've lost a few good shuttles this way.

Remember Plants NEED Carbon Dioxide. quote:Originally posted by nomad: 2) Estimated number of years of life while healthy, as defined by the OECD. Estimates for 2001. USA position 68, just in front of Kyrgyzstan... Source: CIA World Factbook, March 2005And College graduation rates are #1, so I guess we go both ways on this one. quote:Originally posted by nomad: 4) Business efficiency. USA position 38. Source: International Institute for Management Development (IMD).This can be very decieving, there are many enterprenuers in the USA that run businesses that don't really make "Sense". Like 3000AD, is it very "Efficient" to run a company that works on basically 1 product for decades, of course not!, but why does Mr. Smart do it, because it's what he loves to do and he makes a decent living at it. Does it have to be terribly efficient, not necessarily. I'm another example, I have a company that I've run at a loss for the past 2 years, that I finance primarily with another company that I own. Why do I do it? Because I believe that within 3 years I can make it profitable. Now if I lived in the EU where there are SOOO many rules and regulations on hiring employees, would I have attempted this.. Hell NO!!! But here in the US, if this business doesn't work out, I can always file for Bankruptcy and move on to my next venture. Not terribly efficient, but at the same time it's an engine for massive Job Growth quote:Originally posted by nomad: 5) Unemployment. USA position 141 of 192 surveyed nations. Conclusion: 51 nations exhibit better figures. Source: CIA World Factbook, March 2005Again, you have to dig deeper in this. Some examples: -- In the US, if you are layed off for whatever reason, you are counted as unemployed.. not so in many other countries. -- In the US if you have a Job Offer, say IBM offered you a Job that you will start 30-60 days after you graduate, you are counted as unemployed until you actually start working .. many other countries count you as employed. -- In the US if you answer a survey that you've stopped looking for a job becuase you couldn't find one, they don't take you off the unemployed list for at least 45 days, whereas in other countries they take you off the unemployed list immediately. When you add all these factors together it gives the US a higher overall level of unemployment than many other countries, but that's not all. Consider the fact that for years Russia has always claimed that they had Full employment, there was no such thing as unemployment there becuase if you didn't have a job, they would just stick you in somewhere to sweep up, that didn't change the fact that you had to wait in a 4 hour line every week to buy a loaf of bread. Consider the fact that Mexico has had only about 5% unemployment for the past few years, but it doesn't change the fact that over there you get a job paying you a dollar or 2 a day, and you're considered employed (even though that doesn't even cover the cost of basic living, like rent, food and the like) I noticed that MANY countries that supposedly have better unemployment number than the US, (such as South Africa & Thailand) Actually have a huge contigent of their populace living in squalor.... but hey AT LEAST THEY HAVE A JOB RIGHT!!! quote:Originally posted by nomad: China: Regulations have to be explicitely designed to cope with the issues caused by China. Free trade is an euphemism if production costs don't give you any chance to compete. The only ones who benefit are retailers who don't give a damn where they buy their stuff as long they can resell it with a benefit, even if this implies the closure of half your industry. By the way, I will never laugh enough thinking at all these missiles aimed at Taiwan financed with US money... As for the issues caused by China here's what I have to say about this. We are all citizens of this planet. I think that if by me buying a Chinese Item a Chinese guy gets a job, so what. It keeps our levels of inflation at such low levels that it allows us to have a much better life than the average Chinese guy. If someday we make it possible for all those people in China, Thailand, Mexico and all those other countries to live half as good as we do, than hooray for us. I understand that this means that people will lose their jobs over it, but hey, shit happens right, who knows maybe one of them will start an inefficient business and get a bunch of their old buddies that they used to work with employed. It's what I did after my employer closed her doors. -
I had an issue with UC that it kept saying that I was running simulation software or something like that I don't remember. Anyways, after deleting Nero and Alcahol 120, I still wasn't able to play. Finally I remembered that I had installed CloneCD about 2 years ago on my system and deleted it. Since everyone that was posting problems with Safedisc were saying that it was a cloneCD problem, I figured that I would install it just so I could tick "Hide CDR media" and sure enough it works. Funny thing is, the only reason that I buy software like Nero and Alcahol is so that I don't have to keep loading the discs for the various games that I own. I've never pirated a single peice of software, but these attempts at copy protection sometimes really tick me off. Problem is though, that there are TOO many kids out there that are all too willing to steal other people's works, look at the record business and all the illegal music downloaded on a daily basis by these kids. Unfortunately, they make it very difficult for the honest people and at the same time absolutely KILL the PC Game market. That's why all the best new games are coming out for the Gaming Boxes, they feel there is less piracy there.
-
So I'm guessing that the only reason that one would go with UC Gold instead of UC AWA is if they didn't have a higher end machine capable of running UC AWA, right?
-
Ahh.. Improved Graphics and Naval Assets.. sorry I missed that one. I noticed that you said that UC, UCG & UC AWA will all be seperate installs. Would it be possible to manually move a saved game from UC to UCG and/or UC AWA, or will all 3 be on different formats?

Unless the numbers have changed drastically in the last ten years were still the worldÔÇÖs user polluter extraordinaire. Although I hated studying sociology since I have no interest in the area, it did provide a wealth of useless information IMO. While we are one of the worlds biggest polluters, (being that we consume something like 70% of all the worlds products) we do have the highest air quality when compared to all the other industrialized countries. Keep in mind that there are a lot of things still very legal in other parts of the world that are not allowed in the U.S. ... Things like Leaded Gas & Paint, DDT (an insecticide), CFC's and a plethora of other items that I'm not going to go into for now, the point is, you get up everyday and you don't have to worry about the world around you poisoning you to death like in some other countries. -

As far as polution we stand a head above the rest mainly do to the age of the factories and equipement that were still using. Who sells safer cars than in the US? What other country in the world requires all the crash tests, Air bags, safety restraints and so on that the US requires? As for the age of our factories, the older factories produce MORE pollution, not less, it's because of our environmental requlation that keeps us clean, look at the USSR, their aging factories are an environmental nightmare. -

The US is by far the RICHEST country in the world, with the lowest unemployment, the Biggest Homes, the best and SAFEST cars, the lowest polution of any industrialized nation, the most open spaces, the most disposable income, I could go on and on. It is BECAUSE of the fact that we have free and open trade that has allowed us to become so rich and powerfull, so do I think it's sad... NO. Oh and by the way, for those of you who say that Japan's Unemployment is lower, read this, clearly if US methods were used their unemployment rates would be about the same as ours, possibly even higher.
