  1. Don't feel bad, ISS won the tournament last year with only about 2 people active in any given match. It's doable, but only if you have ace guys at the command con Cheers friends, make this year a good one.
  2. Hey friends, I recently tried out a voice chat app that's WAY superior to what we're using now with Teamspeak. Ventrilo's got a MUCH clearer codec, and it's got better microphone support within the application for those (like myself) who, for whatever reason, are difficult to hear. In a two hour chat I had with some friends from college, everyone was clearly audible and there was no "can you repeat that?" or "can you speak up?" Hearing is believing, and I think that if you guys try it you'll prefer it to Teamspeak. You can find the link to the client here.
  3. Thanks, I hadn't mentioned the two new channels yet, but I thought it might be good for us to create a sticky topic that was a quick reference to the stuff on our site, with the first post being a quick list of what was up there and how to get to it. It would serve as a way for the curious to orient themselves with respect to our stuff. What do you think?
  4. I'm not sure if it makes much difference to me, I'm the guy that waits six months for a game to drop to the $20-30 range. I cringe at the thought of what they're going to charge for the XBox 2, and what the price on that will be a year from November, what's the point of buying this stuff the moment it comes out?
  5. Dear heavens Scriv, because this is a doom licensed movie, it was doomed from the beginning (if you'll pardon my pun). Faithfulness to the source material is what will GUARANTEE it makes the trash heap because you can't pay for the cost of the movie if all the people who played the game went to see it--twice. Your problem IS with the 'story' because you're telling us it's an "insult to anyone who ever played the game." What was so great about demons on mars? It's patently ridiculous as a story concept, but we played it because it was a lot of fun to blast the crap out of stuff, and if twelve year old kids had to blast the crap out of something, better something that perhaps had it coming (and who wouldn't blast a demon if one had the means and opportunity?). It was the second major FPS title after Wolfenstein 3D for heaven's sake! Get a grip guys, I'll agree that they're lifting a title and using it in a way that wasn't similar to what it originally was, but that doesn't mean it's "offensive" and that they should make the movie for the puritanical fans of this great "legacy of all gaming."
  6. It happens, glad to have you back Damier. Get caught up on fleet happenings, practice times, and get yourself registered at our official site. We have a number of new features there including the fleet reference (contains information on our units, commanders, history, training tutorials) and the new CIOPS archive (contains planet information and a command craft reference). Also, check your PM, I sent you some other stuff already--we need to get you cleared and into the training rotation for ISS fleet's MP season. You're rejoining a champion team, it's a good time to get back in.
  7. I've added two new elements since last posting here friends. There is now a CIOPS Unclassified Archive containing information on the various planets in the galaxy (including planet info and textures from the game itself), and a listing of Command Craft similar to, but more detailed than, the appendix. Check it out and let me know what you think.
  8. So who are the other guys?
  9. We didn't train on tactics so much as just poking around having fun. We did however simulate an attack on a planetary base, and I spent some time with Krasus working on what targets to hit on a base in what order to be most efficient. It's also related to the stuff that's going to be part of our final exam for the tutorials we're working on. At any rate, a good time was had by all, and we also spent some time doing a patrol route around Eluria. Screenshots when I get a moment, I'm also putting up something new at the ISS site.
  10. Alright guys, I've signed into the Gammulan Patrol fleet as Ryken Toth. What are your AAE's named? There are three of us in there now.
  11. Hey Ben, I answered the call, and last night Krasus and I spent some time doing maneuvers, it was a lot of fun, and when I get a chance, I'm going to post some screens in the AAR section here. Last I knew, we were talking about meeting on Sundays. Also, I applied as a Gammulan to the Patrol fleet, but no one's approved my app, so what's going on?
  12. quote:Originally posted by Wolferz: The radioactive particles distributed from the smoke of the ensueing fire will settle into the surrounding dirt, making it radioactive also....Now, Take a look at the affliction, suffered by returning Gulf War veterans, known as Gulf War Syndrome. Now connect the dots. Did you make a straight line? Or do you need a Ruler?I need a ruler, perhaps this DoD report isn't adequate, but if not, perhaps you can dissect their methodology and show me the error of their ways. From the conclusion (part 6). quote:The Baltimore VA and DoD have conducted a DU medical follow-up program for friendly fire victims since 1993. This Section reviews the key aspects of this DU medical follow-up program, which demonstrates to date that those veterans in the US vehicles hit by DU munitions during the Gulf War have experienced no adverse clinical outcomes attributable to DU since their initial traumatic injuries.I'm going to refer you guys either to that first study, or to the volume of information openly available through the British-based Jane's Group, which is highly reliable to most who keep track of this stuff.
  13. Look, I have to say something here. Doom was a fun game, it was not literature. Now I'm not saying that the studio's solution to that problem isn't derivative, it is, and it's kinda lame I'd agree. However, let's not kid ourselves that Doom is in the same class as LotR and X-Men (and similarly adapted movies) which started life as stories first, not as games whose storyline was an excuse to get level after level of bloodsoaked pulse-pounding action. Could a game have a good story? Of course. Did Doom? HAHAHAHAHAHAAA! Seriously, that would be a really stupid thing to be a purist about.
  14. I just applied to the Gammulan Patrol fleet with the AAE of Ryken Toth. That fleet is currently empty, and ISS is hoping to populate it with our AAE's. Will that pose a problem? That's an easy way for us to be self-regulating, and it's a perfect spot for us to use our AAE's.
  15. So, second question. What would the implications be of having the EP for the AE and the AAE go to the AE's db entry? Something else Ben and I were wondering about was whether people would fight as hard in a given battle knowing that they weren't getting ep for it. You raise a good point about keeping the other guy from getting points, and on that scheme then this question becomes kind of like having an offensive and defensive team in football. Nonetheless, would it break anything to have the ep earned by the AAE go to the AE? Also
  16. Well, I like the idea of an AAE (Alternate AE!), but one of the concerns is this part: quote:When you create your secondary AE by registering with the fleet DB you are a member of that fleet and are under the direction of the FL of the fleet you join as if that were the only fleet you are a member of.ISS has developed specific teamwork and tactics for MP (Ben has really, I'm just a fluff/RP writer at the moment), and I think we were wondering if we'd end up giving away the stuff we've been working to build our fleet with. The other question is whether we'd have similar participation standards for the AAE as with the AE. If we were under the direction of another fleet leader, I'd expect he'd want us to genuinely contribute to his fleet beyond "win the RP tournament." Neither Ben nor I have the energy to do twice what we're doing in ISS currently. Can I ask, would there be any problem just having us register at the GALCOM.net gameladder and having that be what constituted our identity as an AAE? Ben and I had been discussing possibly moving our entire 3-4 man team as a unit to whatever alternate alliance we'd sign on as in order to keep our investment in teamwork and tactics from our fleet practices, but we hadn't settled anything as yet since we were waiting to hear more discussion on the idea. Since we don't want to let the MP season drop, then let me ask, what's your opinion on a more limited AAE identity that didn't include official fleet db registration, just registration on the GALCOM.net gameladder? Would that be impractical or lose something important? Are Ben and I missing something?
  17. Fellow ISS Commanders and interested fleet members. This is a request for comment on materials published on the ISS website under the Fleet Reference. Most recently published there are the commander profiles for those of our commanders who are cleared to security level three, as well as a partially completed fleet history that has three of six parts drafted. For those commanders who appear on the personnel profile (or who don't, but are cleared to), please review your entry and respond with comments here if there is anything that needs editing. Also, please read and review the Fleet History. This is especially a task for those senior staff who have been here long enough to remember the stories in question. You may notice that I've taken the liberty of adding a few details or interpretations of my own, but only where such would help tell the story. Thanks again, happy reviewing.
  18. Fair enough Wolferz, I'm not poking at your service, but you have to admit that it does sound a little "conspiracy theory." The interesting thing about conspiracy theories is that most of the real ones offered (like those surrounding the Kennedy assassination for instance) are not theories that require many people to accept a different set of published facts, but they require people to connect those facts in a chain of reasoning that leads to a certain conclusion. It's been my experience that people who say they have an open mind are in fact claiming that it's open precisely because they've rejected a prevailing notion of some sort. I'm not sure that's what I'd define as an open mind since it's one that rules out a given explanation a priori. In the case of the "neo-cons," I'd suggest that there's a case there that needs to be made that probably ultimately won't be conclusive since there's not actual hard enough evidence to justify the conclusion that the US is being governed by the oil tycoons. But then, all the best conspiracies have that trait too. quote:Originally posted by Wolferz: ...even though the country had not been physically attacked by any foreign power.... But in reality it was/is a protected province of the United States Federal Government and the Neocons who were/are running it.I'm assuming you mean America hadn't been attacked and Kuwait is no longer a sovereign power. I don't remember anyone arguing that we had been attacked as our casus belli. Kuwait's falling to Iraq was in our national interest and in the interests of the Kuwaitis who had been conquered by Saddam. I think that while everyone would agree that we liberated and subsequently protected Kuwait, it's not clear that we're compromising their sovereignty. At any rate, if these things are so, they're certainly counter-intuitive and require more evidence than one's own preferred method of "connecting the dots."
  19. Clear sailing chief, give your brother our best.
  20. I'm into server 1, I can't find the 3000AD Fleet Server
  21. Trying to get on, having problems with the patch, should be on momentarily
  22. Wow, this is one for those who wear the tin foil hats, but on another note, isn't this one for the Politics/Religion threads?
  23. I see a recruit in the Fleet DB. Commander Walkerin, post something here about yourself so we can get introduced.
  24. Wait, wait.... I have to check something here... SC rates 8/10 and... Scrivener rates 8/10, Oh my gosh! SC and Scriv rated a movie the same! Now if Constantine visits hell, he'll be amazed to find it frozen over!
  25. I think I can make it for a little while. That's about 1pm CST I think, so I should be okay. Krasus, Rip, what about you guys?
