There is no need for new ships except to look pretty. And as to question #6: Turn off PTA, recall ships, etc. so that only your guns are firing on the station, then, when the shields are gone and the hull/armor is at about 3000, set guns to 10% until the TRD turns grey, duh!

Shuttles are ALWAYS launch ready, all you have to do is man them with marines or FE's. FE's have NO repeat NO purpose on Cruisers!!! Quit being stupid saying they Prep shuttles, THEY DON'T! SC probably forgot to, or didn't think to take them off cruisers.

I have that same problem and do actually have vertex shaders. However, I just now re-installed the patches w/o re-installing the actual game. Don't know if this is the problem.
