Ord Tantel Posted December 4, 1999 Report Posted December 4, 1999 Ver 2.08 UKIn the first ACM mission when i get to Majoris and attempt to save the game, it always kicks me out!I have read many posts on the subject but nothing so far has helped!I get the General Protection fault 2001I have 601k free when i try MEM in a DOS window. I have put in the config.sys lines as it states in the FAQ. I tried the Scitech Display Doctor - - it made it worse!! (The colours went wierd) I have deleted and re-installed. Refresh rates match up between 2D and 3D. I have the glide2x.ovl in C:Windows.Can Anyone help?!?!System: AMD k6-2 450 32 meg ram ATi MAch 64 voodo2 3dFX Soundblaster 16 Internal V.90 modemHeres hoping!
Rattler Posted December 5, 1999 Report Posted December 5, 1999 Go to your shortcut and manually enter in 32768 for DPMI Memory. 32k of Ram is pushing the lower envelope in later patches. Ord Tantel Posted December 5, 1999 Author Report Posted December 5, 1999 Tried the DPMI and it still did not work!!It seems i can save the game any point up to the diplomat ship docking. After that if i try to save I get the general Protection Fault. The Game runs fine up until the point I save!!I have un-installed and re-installed - no luck!Un-installed, re-installed added v2.09 preview -- No Luck!Someone, anyone, please help! I really want ot get into this game!!
Charles Lindsey Posted December 5, 1999 Report Posted December 5, 1999 Be sure to start a new game. Old saved games can bring their problems with them. Try a different save point. Earlier perhaps then go past that spot. Try Free Flight for a while and see what happens. Seems odd that particular point would be causing you grief. Wait for RAM to come down and get more. Ord Tantel Posted December 5, 1999 Author Report Posted December 5, 1999 working so far!!Heres what I did.... 1. Changed DPMI to 327958 (as per reply) 2. Checked around some more on the board and followed this advice... Files=90 buffers=8 FCBSHIGH=8 (what it does I have no idea) 3. Cleared save games, joystick file, setup. 4. Started a new game. 5. ACM mission 1- watched Diplomat1 dock. 6. Docked myself an bought Radine (That stuff goes quick!!!) 7. Launched and then saved. 8. instead of dumping me out with the fault I went back to the menu screen as per normal. That and typing this is all i had time for..I hope thats the last of the problem.... but you never know...Thanks to everyone who posted a reply here and elsewhere!!!!!
Supreme Cmdr Posted December 5, 1999 Report Posted December 5, 1999 I don't think the buffers, fcbs and files lines fixed it. The FAQ has the proper settings. If you had used those, you would have been fine. I suspect that you problem was a combo of DPMI and bad saved games. Using FILES=90 is just a waste of memory. The FBCS setting is irrelevant.Again, if its not in the FAQ, you're on your own.

I doesn`t work still. i loaded up and continued to play, 15 mins before the first mission was supposed to end I saved the game and it kicked me out with the protection fault! What is going on here? What it all means i have no idea?The config.sys in the root c: reads exactly like it says in the FAQ.I maybe completely dense. But i have two config.sys files. To find them both I went to the FIND tool on the start menu.I feel reluctant to change the C:WindowsCommand one as i do not understand what all the commands and such actually do.DO I need all that stuff in this file? I do not know?I have also tried using the Voodo 2 drivers on the CD-Rom and putting them in the BC3K directory. Still no joy.What is wierd is the game will run perfectly fine up until a certain point in game time were after if I try and save the game it kicks me out with the General Protection Fault.
Supreme Cmdr Posted December 8, 1999 Report Posted December 8, 1999 If you have one in c:config.sys, leave it there. Leave the one in c:windows untouched.btw, what does your c:autoexec.bat file look like?do you have a SAVE folder in the folder where BC3K is installed?

To be sure, uninstall it from within Windows.The config.sys in c:windows is irrelevant. The one you should be concerned about is the one in the root at c:. Saving and restoring works fine in free flight. i have had a few E-mails from others with a similar (the same) problem.

Thomas Siemens Posted December 15, 1999 Report Posted December 15, 1999 Ord,when you apply changes to your memory settings or config.sys, you should also delete the files setup.cfg and joystick.set and start a new game to test. Cruis.In Posted December 28, 1999 Report Posted December 28, 1999 I change my memory settings around all the time, because I'm trying to find the perfect one, and see if it's the cause of certain crashes. And I reuse my old save game each time, I mean the one I'm currently playing. I'm in free flight. And I've never had to patch, unpatch, I have 2.08 out of the box.Maybe he did something wrong patch wise?
Steve Schacher Posted February 5, 2000 Report Posted February 5, 2000 If you are still tracking this, I had the exact same problem. After a while, when I tried to save a game, it would crash me back to the desktop after clicking on the save button or pressing enter (after entering the save game name).I finally tracked it down to my mouse driver (only once did I get an error message that referenced the mouse). I downloaded the most recent mouse drivers and then this problem went away forever.

I reinstalled, did all the FAQ tweeks I could and it went away for a couple of days, then it came back. After reading your post, I updated my mouse driver almost two weeks ago, and haven't had a problem since! I hope Ord caught your reply.
