SpotSD Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 If there is a patch that lets people be in first person in cap ships will the interior engine be running simultaneously with the space planetary and flight engine(s)? And if so how on earth will people with the minimum system requirements be able to play without their system being bogged down?[ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Charles Lindsey Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 No.Try BCTE for an inside look in the BC. It's what was intended but not able to be implemented at this time.
Guest $iLk Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 Actually I believe that SC has decided to give it another shot and possibly release it as a post-release patch a ways down the road.Either that or an expansion.
Supreme Cmdr Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 You will require nothing short of at least a PIII 500Mhz machine, 128MB RAM and a 32MB graphics card to play BCTC. In fact, that is the minimum specs.
Guest rtoolooze Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 And as cheap as computer parts are these days, there is really no excuse for a true gamer to have anything less. I think no one should be slower than 1 ghz. Hey, if I can afford to keep up with technology, anyone can.
SpotSD Posted August 30, 2001 Author Report Posted August 30, 2001 Thanks for the feedback, but I'd still like to know will interior engine be running simultaneously with the space planetary and flight engine(s)?That was kinda the whole point of my post.

I'm having a VERY hard time trying to find money for my new tbird 950... ok, you'll say that's a good computer, but it's better having a $$$ computer that will last at least a year than a $$ computer that will last 3-4 months.[ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: Epsilon 5 ]
Hector Socas Navarro Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 Yes, it will run the exterior world in real time. It will do everything BCM does _plus_ the ability to walk inside capital ships, bases and stations.Ain't that cool?

That was kinda the whole point of my post. It was a blatantly silly question,(especially in light of my dev update) which is why I ignored it. Which part of this simple premise (for as long as you've been here), did you miss exactly? And WHY is it that some of you folks can't get the spelling in the subject CORRECT? I mean, its OK to goof in the post, but for cripes sake, NOT the subject!!!OK, as of today, I hereby decree that any person caught creating a thread with an incorrect spelling in the subject, will be banned for a month and the thread will be deleted on sight. That should take care of that[ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Guest $iLk Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 Then I suppose you won't allow JEFF K to post around here too long? l337 LIEK JEFF K!!!!1
Epsilon 5 Posted August 30, 2001 Report Posted August 30, 2001 I was wondering when would the subject be corrected...
SpotSD Posted August 31, 2001 Author Report Posted August 31, 2001 Well sorry but I didn't think it was a silly question because A) BCM's space and planetary engines don't run simultaneously because the average computers RAM can't handle it I'm not a programmer so why the heck would I know? And before the next time you go off and type two sentences of criticism at someonei.e. quote: It was a blatantly silly question,(especially in light of my dev update) which is why I ignored it. Which part of this simple premise (for as long as you've been here), did you miss exactly? Just think which one would be easier... What you said above? or a simple yes or no answer? (which frankly was all I was asking for)
Guest $iLk Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 I believe what the SC was saying is that this was basically addressed in the Development Diary. At least he gave you two sentences. He could have given you a RTFDEVDIARY or something like that.Basically I'm not really understanding your first post though, are you asking if someone can run all the perspectives simultaneously? Ummm I think that would crash any computer. In multiplayer then? It will all be determined by which point of view you have chosen at any one time. Like SC has said, when one engine drops off the other engines pick up - seamlessly. So basically it's like you are loaded into a different part of the game module. The development diary does (and has) cover most of this.----------------------- after edit: quote:(which frankly was all I was asking for) Hate to be nitpicky but you asked two questions up top. One was a yes or no and the other was asking something different. To fully answer your question - WHY would all the different viewpoint engines be running on your computer at once? A first person, space, planetary etc.?Only one at a time - along with supporting engines like AI, PTE, etc.how could you have more than one viewpoint going at the same time? Basically let's say you are in space. You decide to step away from your command chair ta da!!! First person engine takes over and you are no longer in control of the ship. You walk around, screw off, etc. Then you go to the airlock, put on your spacesuit, and step out - Space FP engine takes over YAY!!! Turn around and your ship still hauling ass away.Float to shuttle and get in - YAY! Control of shuttle. Fly to planet ! YAY Planetary engine takes over. Land and get out - you guessed it - YAY Planetary FP Engine takes over!So the point of my whole post is to remind you that NO these cannot all exist at the same time on one computer - therefore your computer only has to run one at a time.Does this answer your question?[ 08-30-2001: Message edited by: $iLk ]
Epsilon 5 Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 $iLk... you almost look pissed...the wole point is that wherever you are in the universe, only the concerned engines will be running. It would be crazy to run all the engines at the same time and expecting an average computer to run it...
SpotSD Posted August 31, 2001 Author Report Posted August 31, 2001 quote: Does this answer your question? Sadly no...Let me use an example. In 3000ad a good way to escape your attackers was to fly planeside because the planetary engine booted up and the space engine shut down (someone correct me if I'm wrong.) I guess when the space engine shuts down it takes the NPCs with it. The reason for this is the two engines aren't running at the same time. If they were your comp would fry.So (again correct me if I'm wrong) if the flight engine and cap ship interior engine aren't running at the same time then couldn't you (if you were in a sticky situation) just switch to firstperson and the flight engine would shut down taking whatever was attacking you with it. To put it bluntly... that would suck, and take away realism from the game. Which is why I don't think the SC wouldn't do it that way. (could be wrong) If he doesn't do it that way (with my very limited programming knowledge) I have come to the conclusion that the two engines must be running side by side. Again I don't see how that is possible for people with the minimum BCM system requirements be able to play. The SC answered that above quote: You will require nothing short of at least a PIII 500Mhz machine, 128MB RAM and a 32MB graphics So what all that babble eventually boils down to is*drumrole*Will or will not the space or planetary flight engines be running at the same time as the ship interior engine? Why this question needs more than a yes or no answer is totally beyond me.PS. Could anyone point out exactly where in the Dev diary this is covered?
Guest $iLk Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 Actually in BC3k the enemy didn't just disappear - they just didn't follow you into orbit. I've had several instances of enemy cap ships following me close enough to the planet that they followed me in. Also - haven't you ever flown a shuttle down into the atmosphere - and then call your BC down later and watch it come into the atmosphere? Or vice versa? Think of it as like a game where every entity has it's point of view - Okay as the SC said - People can be on the ground fighting, ships flying overhead, while jackass in orbit fires an OTS to the ground. It was mentioned in the last Dev diary I believe (or the one before that - can't remember)But anyway - aren't all those engines "running at the same time"?I don't know how many times in the last three months the ebgames interview was reproduced, cause it was in the dev diary - at VoodooExtreme - at ebgames.com, and in the forum. So in a nutshell - YESHope that clears it up. BTW - just because craft aren't there when you enter the atmosphere doesn't mean they disappeared - they may have lost interest in you, lost you on sensors, or found something shiny and followed it instead. But it is very possible that enemy forces (who are able) will follow you wherever you go. -------------------- after edit - I'm not pissed Epsilon 5 lol just trying to think of a good way to explain it. if you are in first person inside of a ship - doesn't mean that everything else in the universe disappears. Just means that you no longer have control of your Battlecruiser and may find a bulkhead dissappear in front of you while walking down the hallway if in a battle. The Space / Planetary stuff has already been covered - not in the dev diary there now but one or two before it. but ebgames.com still has the article i think.Basically when the SC said "seamlessly" he meant it. He's not going to make it easy to escape from a battle just by ducking into FP mode.(Test some of your theories out in Episode 2 demo commander career and see what you figure out) Though the space engine is running - you have no idea what's going on in space while on the planet - unless you have a probe set up.[ 08-31-2001: Message edited by: $iLk ]
Guest $iLk Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 I just read the edit of the post before last and I did look pissed, nothing against you SpotSD so don't take it personal, uh your question actually was answered by Hector Socas Navarro up top above SC's second post - quote:Yes, it will run the exterior world in real time. It will do everything BCM does _plus_ the ability to walk inside capital ships, bases and stations. Ain't that cool? Anyhoo I will leave it at "yes" and that will be all... I've been playing Counterstrike lately so maybe I was wound up about that?
Supreme Cmdr Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 quote: A) BCM's space and planetary engines don't run simultaneouslyThats not true quote:because the average computers RAM can't handle it Thats not true either quote: I'm not a programmer so why the heck would I know?...which is why you should (a) read the resources available to you ( ask the right questions © stop making assumptions
Hector Socas Navarro Posted August 31, 2001 Report Posted August 31, 2001 $ilk, I think you misunderstood his questions (or maybe I did). The original Strike Pack was not supposed to run simultaneously with the rest of the BC engines. So if, e.g., your ship is under attack, once you fire the Strike Pack module, the exterior world would freeze, so to speak. Then you walk around, chase intruders, etc. When you're done, you return to your command chair and then the normal BC engines take over and the space battle continues.I think he was asking if the new concept for BCTE was like that of the SP, or if it would keep running the exterior world and updating the universe in real time while you are in first person mode within the ship, station, etc. And, for the joy of all of us, the answer is _YES_, according to what the SC said in the Dev Diary. Who cares if it takes some extra horsepower to run? Super-fast AMD processors are a bargain now. And by the time BCTE is completed, 1GHz will be the average clock speed out there.Oh, and BTW, SpotSD, just for your information, if there's something the SC really hates is to repeat himself. All of us had to learn that lesson the hard way, and even the most verterans here have had their fair share of "what kind of f*cking stupid question is that?". So don't take his response as something personal. If I asked something obvious I'd get the same reaction. I'd say that all of the beta testers have walked the way to the airlock at least once in their lives [ 08-31-2001: Message edited by: Hector Socas Navarro ]
SpotSD Posted August 31, 2001 Author Report Posted August 31, 2001 Thank you Hector that is exactly what I meant by my question.I have taken none of this personally and I'm satisfied with the way the topic has been resolved. I would like to thank everyone for their time and input. Guess that covers just about everything so I'll see you all later.
