Real_Lucas Posted September 2, 2001 Report Posted September 2, 2001 but a search of the forums turned up nothing, and I don't see any mention of it in the Dev Diary...SC - I was wondering, although I realize that there must be specific reasons as to why there are no shadows in the current version of BCM...will there be plans to incorporate them in the future, through a patch? or is that too big a task? Also, not knowing a whole lot about computers, I have read in another thread that this game will already tax most people's PC to near their limit as it is, I'm assuming that this is the reason that shadows have been omitted.bear in mind, that I really don't think it's a big deal....still...just wondering.please don't hurt me, I actually did search for this question and possible explanation, but could not find it.thanks,Lucas[ 09-01-2001: Message edited by: Supreme Cmdr ]
Supreme Cmdr Posted September 2, 2001 Report Posted September 2, 2001 Shadows were not implemented in this version of the graphics engine, for various reasons. Shadows, reflection maps, vertex shaders etc, will be implemented in the next gen version of the engine used for EFC+GCO. They may appear in a BCM patch, I would imagine.A lot of new enhancements are slated for the next gen engine, once BCM ships.
Real_Lucas Posted September 2, 2001 Author Report Posted September 2, 2001 woohoo!!I certainly didn't expect such a fast response. I'm also surprised that no one else asked this question...btw - thanks for changing the title of the topic. I guess I was trying to be obscure.... I'm am still going to love this game. I can hardly wait until I don't see the outside world again...for a very very long time....people will think I'd gone to prison or something.

Epsilon 5 Posted September 2, 2001 Report Posted September 2, 2001 I thought it was only a wip item...
Real_Lucas Posted September 2, 2001 Author Report Posted September 2, 2001 speaking as a ed animation and modelling hobbyist, a reflection map is a bitmap that is placed on surfaces like windows and face plates, that kind of thing. a good example of this, if any of you have played games like Deus Ex (look at the floors in the HQ) or in driving games when there's a reflection of the sky in 3rd person mode.New reflection maps and mathematical algorithms actually reflect the surroundings in real time, but it's possible to cheat, using a spherical image that is applied to the reflective object, to illustrate the effect.I hope that makes sense....
Supreme Cmdr Posted September 2, 2001 Report Posted September 2, 2001 quote:I thought it was only a wip item...Do you see it in the VCF anymore?Exactly. It adds nothing to the game, so it would've been a waste of time to finish it.
Soback Posted September 2, 2001 Report Posted September 2, 2001 Thanks for explaining. That was indeed very helpfull.

You will be too busy gawking at everything else, and running for your life when those nasty Gammulans show up."
