diakonos Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 I'm extremely sorry if this is a repeat, but I did a search and didn't find anything on this topic, so if someone can point me in the right direction (or answer my question, if possible) I'd appreciate it. Anyway, I read in the news section of the site that there might not be anymore Battlecruiser games after BCG. I can understand this as it seems many modern-day gamers aren't patient enough to overcome the learning curve, however I would like to know if there will be any other projects? Or is BCG it and (aside from a possible XBOX offering (?!) and BCO) there's nothing else to look forward to? It saddens me to think that complex games like this might not be developed in the future, BCMG is my first taste and I want more! This is my first post and I didn't lurk for a while to get a feel for the board so mods and admins, please go easy on me!
Spindoktor Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 quote: BCMG is my first taste and I want more! I don't blame you. First, this info is pretty readily available here on the forums. Try searching using "BCO" and you will find some discussion. My take on it is that, first, BCG (and BCMG leading up to it) should keep you happy for more than enough time for the SC to bring out BCO. BCO will be the MMO version of BCG and due to its online nature (like other MMOs eg. EQ), it will continuely evolve and grow and accomplish the same thing as if the SC continued to release new versions of the franchise. Although I believe it is true, that he is looking to move on to something new beyond the Xbox project. In the meantime, use BCMG as training wheels for BCG. Thats pretty much where I'm at. edit: oh and one thing I forgot. If BCG sells well enough, there's always the chance to release expansion packs that add some of the stuff that had to get cut.
diakonos Posted June 17, 2003 Author Report Posted June 17, 2003 I suppose eventually someone else will pick up the torch and carry it on as well. Realism and 'open-endedness' seem to be trends that will continue.
Supreme Cmdr Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 quote:Originally posted by Diakonos: I suppose eventually someone else will pick up the torch and carry it on as well. Highly unlikely. I've been doing these games for 14+ years and so far, I'm the only one doing them. So, there's no hope for anyone else to even think of doing this.
LostInSpace Posted June 17, 2003 Report Posted June 17, 2003 Hmmmmm, if you guys like the high learning curve of the BCMG and all the nuts and bolts managment you might wanna try (if you haven't already) Sub Command from EA. It's a nuclear sub sim right down to it's dive plane. This is a game for the hard core sim fan. Ea had the guts to go with this title so my hat off to them for that as well as to Dreamcatcher for picking up on BCMG. I do own a copy of the Sub game and I like it. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/subcommand/index.html 8.4 outa 10. It may not be outer space sim but it's an Inner space one it may not be as ampitious as BSMG but it's a great sim never the less. Disclaimer: I'm not an employee of any game company. I recieve no financial rewards for my recommendations. I'm just an avid gamer who just simply like to play games.

I don't think so Diakonos. People have been ridiculing the BC Series for a long time now, whilst subtly but pathetically trying to copy the awesome depth and immersion factor that has been a BC trademark since day one (ie. BC3k)... don't hold your breath!! oh give me a break. Someone will eventually work on something with the scope of BC, maybe even bigger. MAybe not now, maybe not soon, but at somepoint someone will do it.

Spindoktor Posted June 20, 2003 Report Posted June 20, 2003 Well we can hope this gets released at some point. Although I can't find any recent information, so maybe its dead. Thank god the BC series is still alive.

I know GCE will not be a Battlecruiser title in the sense that you command a starship and can go on planets and walk around in first person and so on, but will it be taking place in the Battlecruiser Universe, just on a smaller scale? I think it would be cool if you made a game, say focusing on FPS elements, and then one on strategy, and so on.There is no game called GCE in development The XBox game in development (different name and premise) has very few things in common with the BC universe. In fact, it doesn't even take place in the BC universe. And yes, I am deliberately ignoring all questions about the XBox title because its under wraps. So, quit asking. quote:Originally posted by kodiak: oh give me a break. Someone will eventually work on something with the scope of BC, maybe even bigger. Of course I am right I dunno know though, I mean, considering the growth of the video game industry recently, the amount of new people going into it that HAVE played BattleCruiser, I'm sure not even one of those people will ever feel like working on something like BattleCruiser, ever, merely because you did it first. (/sarcasm) Anyways whatever it is they (may) make, it'll probably be better than BattleCruiser. So do I get banned now because I must damn well be wrong?

LostInSpace Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 Tis the nature of the buisness. Evolution in the gaming industry is taking it's upward course as a result of faster and better computers. Doesn't mean that previous generation games are outdated (well maybe to some of ya). There are quite a few EGA games I've gone back and played because they were that much fun. Same can be said for BCMG. In the years to come, we will all look on this game as a shinning star in the world of "I've beaten this game in three hours" mentality and we will say "those were the good ol' days". And just because someone does come out with a better game in the BCMG style doesn't mean a dang thing just means we owe SC a debt of gratitude for keeping the torch alive for this kind of gaming. The thinking man's game. quote:Originally posted by kodiak: quote:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by kodiak: oh give me a break. No? ahh man. quote:And just because someone does come out with a better game in the BCMG style doesn't mean a dang thing just means we owe SC a debt of gratitude for keeping the torch alive for this kind of gaming. The thinking man's game.Well, I wasn't really trying to make this some sort of moral argument of gratitude towards SC, rather was just saying that someone could make a game influenced in the style of BattleCruiser. Though not many of you here seem tobelieve such a thing could ever happen, as if it were taboo to touch a piece of gaming pie, which imo, could easily be touched on more. I mean, I really like BattleCruiser, whether or not SC thinks I'm some sort of retarted kid, I still love his game, and will buy the next one... but who's to say someone shouldn't make a better game in the future? It's like you guys take BC and make it a "holy" game where none can come after it in it's place. Well screw that... if that's what you guys really want and believe in, more power to you, but I'll cling to my ridiculous hope that someone will eventually take SC's place when SC decides to quit his franchise.
Spindoktor Posted June 21, 2003 Report Posted June 21, 2003 quote:Though not many of you here seem tobelieve such a thing could ever happen, as if it were taboo to touch a piece of gaming pie, which imo, could easily be touched on more. I think you are missing the point. The reason why most think its unlikely to happen is because its no longer viable from a financial and marketing standpoint. There aren't many, if any, publishers willing to shell out the amount of capital necessary to develop a product of this nature, for a very small market. In other words, there's no money in it. It takes a guy like SC who, as an independent, seems willing (maybe nuts enough?) to play in this niche area. The amount of money it takes to develop games these days is considerably larger than, say, 10 years ago. So... if a publisher (they usually front the money) is going to layout perhaps millions of dollars for development, he needs to make damn sure its not going to tank. The risk/reward for sims is just to great to gamble on. Bottom line.

That's all I've been saying. I'm not expecting ID to pick up a project like BC or anything.
