CWRM Posted July 1, 2003 Report Posted July 1, 2003 I have tried to get around this and have failed sofar. When I send shuttles to recover filled drones the game crashes to desktop. It happens with autopilot or me piloting. The first shuttle to get over a drone and start landing game crash. Is this a bug under investigation? I am running BCMG. Bandus Posted July 2, 2003 Report Posted July 2, 2003 If you read this before the SC ties you to a bottle rocket, there is a search button at the top of this page. Use it please. If you don't find anything, we can go further but I can tell you right now it is almost undoubtedly a problem on your end (drivers, exc.). Note: Post changed to better suit the holiday of July 4th. :-) [ 07-02-2003, 10:00 AM: Message edited by: Bandus ]

Then applying the patch according to the FAQ instructions. Then check your drivers etc etc
CWRM Posted July 2, 2003 Author Report Posted July 2, 2003 Ok will try the uninstall reinstall. Thanks for the response. I did check the search function and did not find anything that would help before I posted. CWRM Cadet GalcomHQ
CWRM Posted July 3, 2003 Author Report Posted July 3, 2003 Thanks for the help, the uninstall reinstall fixed the problem. Again thanks alot now I can do something when I can upgrade my craft.
CWRM Posted July 3, 2003 Author Report Posted July 3, 2003 Update it didn't fix the problem. After about 3 and a half hours the problem has returned. I've defraged and I have the newest drivers available for sound and video. Any hints or tips to correct this problem would be apprieciated. Thanks for any help.
Supreme Cmdr Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 You could have a bad HDD i.e. with bad disc sectors or something.
CWRM Posted July 3, 2003 Author Report Posted July 3, 2003 Do you know the best way to check that on xp? Like a utility or something? Thanks
Supreme Cmdr Posted July 3, 2003 Report Posted July 3, 2003 quote:Originally posted by William McBroom: Do you know the best way to check that on xp? Like a utility or something? Thanks Unfortunately winXP does not come with a disk checker which you can use manually. You'd have to use something like Norton's, Winternals or something.
CWRM Posted July 3, 2003 Author Report Posted July 3, 2003 Does pcdocter for windows check for bad sectors? I have a copy of it on my computer will check and see if it does. Thanks again

But let us know how it goes because this an unheard of problem and I'm quite certain there's something screwy on your end - especially since it works and then breaks again. This could be a corrupt file (being written to a corrupt disk sector) or something like that.
CWRM Posted July 4, 2003 Author Report Posted July 4, 2003 I am currently defraging my drive after I used the Chkdsk program in windowxp. I will let you know if it fixed the problem. I'm hoping that it did. I apparently did have bad sectors because I had to put windows back on because programs stopped responding. I will uninstall and reinstall then try the game for extended time and let you know. Thanks
CWRM Posted July 5, 2003 Author Report Posted July 5, 2003 It is still crashing. Does anyone know of a free or cheap utility to check hard drives for windowsxp? Chkdsk does not seem to fix the problem. Thanks for any help.

Someone else seems to be having the same problem with Chkdsk go to this Q&A site http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_...Q_20581654.html maybe your answer will be there. You might also want to use a diagnostic tool from your particular Hard Drive manufacture. So if you have a Western Digital you'll want to use Western Digital Diagnostics etc..... Just to verify that there are problems with the drive or if it's just XP bugging out. [ 07-05-2003, 01:47 AM: Message edited by: LostInSpace ]
CWRM Posted July 5, 2003 Author Report Posted July 5, 2003 I found scandisk on my system recovery disks and ran that. It says no problems with drive. Apparently the problem is somewhere else if scandisk is working properly. I have just resetup my system so will reinstall game and see if problem recurrs.
CWRM Posted July 6, 2003 Author Report Posted July 6, 2003 Problem Is still there. I will defrag again and check again.
Supreme Cmdr Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 quote:Originally posted by William McBroom: Problem Is still there. I will defrag again and check again. This could be an incorrect patch application problem too. Did you actually try this BEFORE applying the patch? i.e. from a fresh install?
aggressor27 Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 Unless you've already formatted your HHD; What about a virus? When I had W32.Pinfi, it screwed up a few of my *.exe files. They didn't start working again until I ran Norton and it cleaned all 512 infected files out of my system. Just a shot in the dark.
CWRM Posted July 6, 2003 Author Report Posted July 6, 2003 It happens on both versions. I have norton internet security and let it check all files before I disable it to play BCMG. The only thing I can think of is a bad cd. I ordered it from Dreamcatcher. I have checked drive it is good no problems with western digital diagnostics.

It definitely has nothing to do with a bad CD or you won't be able to play the game, let alone have it crash at some point. The fact that it worked, then stopped, tells me that you have something wrong with your system. It could be a bad memory stick. Either way, if it can't be reproduced - which is can't - then it can't be fixed. Sorry. Extracting drones never has and shouldn't ever cause a problem. In fact, your description below is not clear enough, as there are several ways to extract a drone. So, you might to explain EXACTLY what you are doing and HOW you are doing it - STEP BY STEP, so that someone else can try to reproduce it. quote: I have tried to get around this and have failed sofar. CWRM Posted July 7, 2003 Author Report Posted July 7, 2003 Ok this is what I do. 1 launch from station 2 set waypoint in tacops for cc 3 target planet for planetfall 4 put marines on shuttles 1 per shuttle 5 set drone deploy waypoints in tacops 6 when marines are in shuttles launch shuttles, I generally use the command craft all shuttles launch. 7 after shuttles have returned set extract waypoints in tacops 8 wait for several hours, generally 3 to 3.5 hours 9 launch shuttles 10 when the first shuttle gets over drone and starts landing is when crash to desktop happens. I have just ran a program called Pcdoctor oncall and it showed several problems within my registry and whithin device drivers. I have used it to repair those errors and tried the game. So far it is working fine the game has been running almost an hour and no problems yet. I hope this has fixed the problem. I will report back with more information later.
CWRM Posted July 7, 2003 Author Report Posted July 7, 2003 I found where the corruption was coming in. If I use the ctrl+alt+s key combination then the next time I launch shuttles there is a crash. If I use the command system menu there is no crash. I have tried it 6 differnt times with the same results. You may want to check the code for that key combination.

That key combination is used to go to the save game menu and has NOTHING to do with drones. So, I have NO idea what you're talking about.
