I recently picked up BCMG after hearing raves from some friends. My initial reponse, after fiddling around for a few hours, is: Wow. This game is impressive, unlike anything I've seen before. Kudos to Derek and the rest of his team for creating a real, virtual universe for us to explore.

OK, now here's my real question for the veterans: What's the best strategy for really getting into the game and conquering the learning curve? Is it best to start with a "Roam" campaign and start flying around? Is the Advanced Campaign a good place to start, or will I simply get slaughtered right away? Or maybe work through the instant action scenarios?

Also, how quickly did it take most of you to build your skills enough to survive exploring the galaxy?

Any advice would be helpful. And again, I just can't overstate how cool this game is, and how much I'm looking forward to really immersing myself in it.

For a really simple scenario and universe start the game and after the logos play and the main screen with the ship comes up click Training Academy. Choose the first in the list; "Commander" scenario, and read the description. CLick accept and it starts you out in a safe region in a MK2 Battlecruiser. Here you can practice jumping to various points in this systems (but don't leave it yet). You can also practice assiggning marines to search, assigning pilots, launching fighters, assigning the fighters to patrol, and just all sorts of stuff in a safe region.

Not a safe universe though. It tells you if you stray you may get attacked (why I said don't leave yet).

That's just to bone up on the commands and junk then you can start a Roam campaign. Some you get an enemy right away and others you can wait for a long time. It's what the game decides. So if you are just starting out and happen to get a Roam campaign where enemies jump in straight away you may get creamed and frustrated.

Instant action is good too. If you pick the right one you start in a fighter with a script that has been around since BC3K when it was called Xtreme Carnage.

How long to survive? Learn how to run like hell! Easy. How to stomp rear? A while.

Hello! I just got BCMG a few days ago and have started to tackle it today! I love this sort of game, thanks to Derek and the team for releasing something like this to the world!

Anyway, my on topic reply What do people generally do when starting out a roam campaign? I'm really unsure what to do first...trade? fight? ???

Any ideas would be gladly received!

1. Start deploying drones

2. Trade to get some money

3. Retrieve drones to get more money.

4. Attack planets, stations, hunt raiders, etc.

Anyways, during 1 to 3 you'll probably run into some enemy ships that you'll either engage or run away from.

Other stuff that you'll probably try out when you've collected enough money/EP:

1. If you want a vacation, you could always try visiting some planets/moons.

2. Or go into a town and have a party with some enemy raiders

3. If you like gambling, why not try the flux fields?

4. Beam Resnig down to Pluto

5. The ultimate of course... is to play as a god... use the RANDOM on your favorite enemy planet

One thing I like to do in roam mode is to roleplay. Absent specific missions of the ACM, you might enjoy creating your own role for the career you create. All it takes is a little imagination.

For instance, in one of my roam campaigns, I roleplayed that I graduated from the academy and was assigned the short term task of improving the skills of my crew as well as building up enough funds to accomplish my long term assignment, which was to rid the entire Terran quadrant of star stations hostile to Galcom.

There are three things you'll need in order to have an effective career in ROAM.

Money, Money and more Money.

As already stated, deploy some mining drones, stop at Galcom and buy some stuff, fly to Wraith or Velari and sell it, rinse repeat. Pick up and unload your drones and sell the minerals, rinse repeat.

Upgrade your ship then set out to rule the Universe!

Or not...the beauty is you can do anything you want!.

cheers, thanks for the pointers...

i've now been trying everything out in the training area for hours...getting to grips with it now!!

btw, is there a way to send shuttles on trade routes to automatically sell mined cargo at a station, or can it only be done with me AE (the only way I see so far )
