Charles Lindsey Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 BC3K offers so many different play styles I am interested.I like the keyboard. A Capital ship should not be controlled by a joystick in my opinion. I also use the bridgeview to play. I use TacOps as an information only. It's great for info, especially when you have probes out. But it's just not something to play by. Again my opinion. Anyone else?------------------ Commander Chavik Spectre Fleet ICV Phoenix Official BC3K Tester"We Shall Arise From The Ashes"
Guest Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 Exactly. Tacops is best used for info and not for play. I too use the bridgeviewer for space combat. AI control is really boring. I want total control. Your right about the capship being controlled by a joystick. Keyboard control sounds much more realistic. Hopefully when BCM comes out, a majority of the commanders use the keyboard for that true "feel".------------------ "Live forever apes!."Cmdr. Kron Spectre Fleet ICV Vanguard
Parias Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 All that I can say is that I didn't blow $400 on a Force Feedback stick just to play a space sim with a keyboard, cap-ship game or no Joystick here! As for bridge/tacops... mostly depends on my mood.------------------ Cmdr. GREG MILLER Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 Me, I'm a Bridgeviewer and a Thrustmaster user. Although I too also use the keyboard, that is mostly to order commands and not really to fly or fight; Although, now you guys have peeked my interest and I might have to try once and a while.Speaking of, I just bought a new Thrustmaster, won't open it until BC:M though. My current one is about dead, and my ship turns like a snail. I am kinda use to it now, and have taken 2 stations with it. So the new flight dynamics in BC:M should not be such a shock to me. ------------------ CMDR GREG 'GMAN' MILLER ORION FLEET FLEET EXECUTIVE OFFICER T.B.G. Blades Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 What can I say? I use everything I possibly can. Tend to use joystick more than keyboard, and I spend as much time with the bridgeview as I do in TacOps. I tend not to take to the ol Interceptors too much these days, instead concentrating on operations back home.I cant trust the AI to keep my baby in one piece when I'm off dusting crops, so these days I pretty much keep myself back at the barn.

Steve Schacher Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 I use my MS Sidewinder Freestyle Pro, with 17 programmable buttons to control the ship in combat. I have buttons programmed to: enable ECM, match target speed, fire weapons, afterburner, roll the ship, target enemies, dock, set FP target, target ships, etc. I will use the keyboard for minor commands, like switching to Tacops or playing with different views.I used to do most combat manually, but now I let the AI do most of the work. Hey, I have 117 crewmen -- they need to do something!! Also, I want them to improve their AI, and they won't do that unless they are in AI mode.I like to do combat from the bridge view, but I will use Tacops when traveling across several regions. If enemies appear, I will switch to the bridge view.A quick tip: If you use Navitron to set a destination (or FLY TO a priority target that is several regions away) and then try to target an enemy that you find enroute, and you find that your ship wants to keep flying to its original destination, the best way to clear out the old destination is to halt the ship, then ATTACK/NOTHING(DISABLE) (the entry down at the bottom of the list. Pressing the ALT or CTRL-ALT doesn't clear out your FLY-TO target.[This message has been edited by Steve Schacher (edited 08-04-2000).]
Gordon Posted August 4, 2000 Report Posted August 4, 2000 I use a joystick for Battlecruiser flight control, allow the AI to control my interceptors and shuttles. Tacops on occasion but not in battle. Probably would use it more if you were able to mouse click on your target in this mode. I like to view my space battles and anticipate my angle of attack, in Tacops you lose your dimensional concept.Hey Parias, I also have a force feedback stick, I asked SC if BCM was going to support force feedback and unfortunately the answer was no. ------------------ rgordon434

Guest Commander Hamblin Posted August 5, 2000 Report Posted August 5, 2000 Hey!! You stole my idea! You must have somehow telepathically read my mind while I was at work today, because I was going to start up this EXACT same topic! But anyway, in answer to the questions...1) Keyboard, without a doubt. I mean, I love my MS Precision Pro, but that's more of a Freespace or X-Wing Alliance type thing. In ANY capital ship sim, whether it be BC3K, Starfleet/Klingon Academy, I-War, etc, I ALWAYS use the keyboard. 2) And, again, I always control things from the Bridge. Yeah, Tacops is alright, but only for when you want specific information, or strategy. I prefer the more "hands on" feel you get with the Bridge, than the "war room" type feeling (As someone else mentioned here) you get with Tacops. But anyway, I'm taking my topic back!*Takes topic, and puts it back into his mind*There! Eclipse Posted August 5, 2000 Report Posted August 5, 2000 I seem to remember a thread like this awhile ago. I use whatever is handy, keyboard and mouse if I happen to be in tacops, joystick and keyboard if I get sick of my pilots flying while I'm in Tacops and want to clear the area out in a hurry. I usually stay in tacops unless I need to get some info, or just want to fly, or just want to KILL. Wold Posted August 5, 2000 Report Posted August 5, 2000 I use a microsoft force feedback joystick for flight control and a couple of programmed commands. Keyboard/mouse for the rest. Though I've wondered about future voice commands..... TacOps for big picture and planet work. quote:I also have a force feedback stick, I asked SC if BCM was going to support force feedback and unfortunately the answer was no.I believe SC was refering to the midi files needed for the force feedback functions as not being supported. I am betting that the joystick will work with BCM just as it does with BC3K. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong in my er, interpretation, SC. ------------------ Cmdr. Gordon Posted August 5, 2000 Report Posted August 5, 2000 Oh, I have no doubt that my stick will work just will not work with force feedback. Would be great if it did though, especially when in a dogfight (like Freespace, X-BtF, ...). Nothing like a stick jolting in your hand due to recoil or weapon impact.------------------ rgordon434

I found mine in the X-36 Combo. Why do you think I still use a mouse and keyboard as well? Steve Schacher Posted September 3, 2000 Report Posted September 3, 2000 I've lately been spending more time in Tacops. I trust my officers more now (and I still have a long way to go with them) so I give general BC orders and let my crew handle the details while I switch to Tacops, lock onto my ship and zoom in real close. Then I use the mouse to rotate my viewpoint while I watch the space battle unfold. If you're sure that the enemy is no match for your ship, then just sit back and enjoy the computer animation. I love watching good space battles on TV and in the movies, and this is as good as anything else that I've seen, and it's always original, too!
Guest bigred Posted September 3, 2000 Report Posted September 3, 2000 Bridgeview was how you were ment to see the game. I play through bridgeview, however, When issuing orders to ships, crews, etc, then I use tacops.I use tacops to control Tactical operations. It is like an advanced radar scanner/comms link
