Guest Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 So at last we have the GAME coming soon to play endlessly and settle our differences in multiplayer. The space combat genre is becoming massively multiplayer for the masses and less and less single-player for many avid fans. We have but a handful of titles including single-player coming soon. We all know that Freelancer has single-player included but its gameplay is unmatched against BCM. By the end of this year I-War 2 releases but from what I heard so far it has a scripted mission structure and the freeform element is questionable at best. And lastly we have the enigmatic Elite 4 due out sometime in 2002. IMO, Lucasarts should have made a privateer-like game in the SW universe and that would have been the true Freelancer. What do you think about these games under development and which would you purchase and why? Also what do you think the future has for this genre?------------------ Cmdr. Commander Jamont Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 Well i don't know ... I loved the old privateer. but stil bcm has everything i need , so i wont be paying attention to the other games ------------------ Commander Nick Jamont GCV Prophecy IV, ISSHQ (Saturn) Intel & Espionage Wing Leader - ISS Fleet "silence is gold"
Whisper Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 Hmm, good question! Personally, I'll stick with BC:M as my main game, but I won't exclude the possiblity of others. Instead of "impulse buying" games, from now on I'm jsut going to sit tight and waint for the plethora of "Years Best" features that always pop up around January and December. Then I'll just get #1 Future of the genre: It'll see ups, it'll see downs. With this new wave of banning FPS type games because of gore, other genres are surely to fall as well. RPG, strategy, aracade, even racing sims I imagaine. I think space sims will fare well during that era. They're hardly ever gory (remember the little pilots that fly out of the deystoyed fighters in Wing Commander?), and deal with the purely fantasy (at least right now) situation of vaccum combat, lasers guns, and warp drives (or equivalents thereof). The anti-violence paranoids will leave this alone, since a teenager who fantasizes about blowing up starships with his ultra-cannon probably isn't much threat to the public good. On a bit of a side note, I predict there will be a split in Space sim styles: the super-nerdy realalistic control freak type game (think BC with Newtonian physics), and the stragiht-forward "blow stuff up" type (think X-Wing without all the stuff to fiddle around with), to appease to the dispossed FPS gamers.
Gordon Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 In my opinion BCM will be a benchmark for all future space sims. I have seen this in the past with successful FPS and RTS games. I personally have been waiting for a great space sim for many years and when I get a game that will be able to hold my interest like BattleCruiser then I will look no further. Future games will need to simulate real conditions more closely and have better AI than the present games on the market.------------------ rgordon434
Steve Schacher Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 My PC game buying habit had been greatly reduced during the years that I went without a Pentium, and since my first Pentium-PC purchase was BC3K, it's basically the only game I play. However, I might buy Elite for sentimental reasons (and for the fact that you actually fly your ships into the stations -- I always liked that aspect of the game).
Eclipse Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 I enjoyed Privateer, but now that I have BC3K and soon BCM privateer will hit the classic section of my shelves.------------------ Commodore Kyle Antilles ICV-Eclipse, Destiny Starstation (Nevuela) Commanding Officer, Destiny Spectre Fleet"You can only love or hate something you truly understand"
Papi Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 I'm much like Steve, haven't played alot other games after buying bc3k. Before bc3k I played Frontier: First Encounters, and obviously I'm waiting Elite 4 to come around. But THE GAME I'm waiting is still BCM.
ShoHashi Posted October 10, 2000 Report Posted October 10, 2000 I think I'll be quite happy with BCM to be honest. It has everything that I want in a space simulation game. You have your trading, you have your exploration, you have planetary operations, you have multiplayer, etc. I'll be content with BCM for a long time to come! ------------------ Commodore ShoHashi ICV Aries, New Frontier (Rinaal) Station Commander, New Frontier Bishamon Fleet ICQ 484321 [email protected]
Guest Commander Hamblin Posted October 11, 2000 Report Posted October 11, 2000 Am I the only one here who's going to let a little variety into their lives, eh? Hehe. I mean, yeah, BCM looks cool and all, but it won't be my ONLY space combat/sim that I play, certainly not the only game I play. I like to have a bit of variety in my diet, hehe.Sometimes, I like nothing better than to come home, load up my copy of X Wing Alliance or Freespace 2, and let my jaw drop at the HUGE menace that is the Imperial Super Star Destroyer, or the gigantic mammoth of a ship that is the GTVA Colossus...and then go into a fierce, close range dogfight with flak guns...er, flakking, missiles exploding, lasers shooting left, right and centre, shields flaring with sustained hits, explosions from...ok, I made my point.
Supreme Cmdr Posted October 11, 2000 Report Posted October 11, 2000 I'm looking forward to laying my hands on I-War2 actually. And Elite 4 is definitely on my list. Hope David doesn't screw it up, now that he's signed the rights to Take2
Hasenau Posted October 12, 2000 Report Posted October 12, 2000 I hope Elite 4 will be playable. After the huge disappointment of First Encounters.... First Encounters had great ideas but all were wasted because of those *bugs*....
Gordon Posted October 12, 2000 Report Posted October 12, 2000 Cmdr. Hamblin I agree varity is the spice of life. I also enjoy many other types of games and play them from time to time (Freespace, Freespace2, X Beyond the Frontier, ...)but a game that has no end or constant variables like BCM will hold my interest indefinately. It will one of those games that will always be close to my computer(that is after I've played the heck out of it). Most of the other games lose their charm after awhile offering no new challanges and become shelved. That is what I meant by looking no further for a space sim.------------------ rgordon434
Guest Posted October 15, 2000 Report Posted October 15, 2000 I'm bit of an odd fish, I like the FPS games and the space sims. Current games are SOF and UT, Freespace2 and X-Wing Alliance. But I also have DiabloII and Baldurs Gate. I just seem to get the games that I like. You can't beat shooting somone in the head at extreme range and seeing the brains fly. I can get the best of both worlds from BCM, Marine and Elite Pilot. Sweet!
Guest Posted October 23, 2000 Report Posted October 23, 2000 Check out the article on A Talent For War the space sim website entitled, "Death of the space sim". Interesting read. WWW.atfw.net .
Guest Mythandryll Posted October 23, 2000 Report Posted October 23, 2000 I am an avid gamer, and you name the game, I probably own it. Throughout the years I have really come to enjoy games that are more freeform and dynamic that let you choose to do what you want as opposed to being scripted. That was my original attraction to BC3000ad. Other freeform or dynamic games that I really enjoy are Daggerfall, Falcon 4.0. I recently purchased Terminus (sorry guys) but while it had some strenghts, it was ultimately boring and limited in scope. The only games that I am really interested in pick up over the coming months are Sea Dogs by Bethesda which shows a lot of promise and of course BCM. During the coming months during the Beta Test, I don't think I'll be playing anything but BCM as it has everything that I enjoy in a game. ------------------ The wise man who said that the pen was mightier than the sword, never rode in this Battlecruiser: Commander Mythandryll Atreidies, GCV Katana
Guest Posted October 25, 2000 Report Posted October 25, 2000 Alas I'm convinced that the space combat genre will die out soon. Articles on this topic on gamcenter.com and atfw.net truly are depressing. BCM is gonna be the last great space sim gonna go down in the books as the best in terms of gameplay and variety the current crop lack. And then GCO... ------------------ Cmdr. Kron ICV Darkness, Spectre HQ (Antis) Spectre Fleet
Wolferz Posted October 26, 2000 Report Posted October 26, 2000 Most of the space sims out there now are too stuctured for my tastes. I never really enjoyed trying to follow a scripted set of missions. Kill x number of enemy craft then move on to the next level. That kind of sim is aimed more toward the younger generation, tweens and very young teenagers.BCM has it all. A thinking man's game. Something different everytime you fire it up. Now with the coming of multiplayer, turn it up a notch. Playing against other humans is a far cry from playing against the AI. The SC did a supreme (naturally) job of coding the best AI I've flown against, but humans add that unpredictability factor that causes sphincter factor 11 ( On a scale of 1 to 10 ) ) A well orchestrated strike by a wing of BC's, with savvy Cmdrs. will be devastating to say the least.I also enjoy flying multiplayer WWII combat aircraft. But that's a horse of a different color altogether. ------------------ Cmdr H. T. Wolferz GCV-Kentucky, GALCOMHQ (EARTH) Prime Fleet - Beta Wing
Supreme Cmdr Posted October 26, 2000 Report Posted October 26, 2000 Don't look now, but one of my guys mentioned that he read in the Dec issue of CGW that multiplayer had been removed from Freelancer.Oh boy
Parias Posted November 3, 2000 Report Posted November 3, 2000 I was kinda surprised to hear that.. but according to Lancer Reactor, it was just CGW mucking around with their crappy PR skills again, or something.------------------ Commodore.
