Rick Gridley Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 I was at Microcenter and I notice they have the PowerSpec P4 1.3 Ghz, 128mb RAM, CDR,TNT2 video card, soundcard (forget which one), 40 Gig HD, 56 k modem, keyboard/mouse, Win ME, (no monitor) for $999 plus tax.I know some have had problems on the PowerSpecs but one of my machines is one that is two years old, P3 550MHZ and it is on 24/7 and I have had no problems at all.Rip out that TNT2 and put a Geforce in it and you will have a nice prebuilt machine for that money. Now whether the P4 really starts to shine once software is written for it as INTEL tells us is something time will tell.
LordDavid Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 Sounds OK to me if you get a Geforce2 or higher video card, and an extra 128 megs of ram would help too...and then you could get.........
Epsilon 5 Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 Take an AMD Thunderbird! You can surely have a good deal for about the same or lower price!
Menchise Posted May 24, 2001 Report Posted May 24, 2001 I'm going to open a new topic soon on why the Pentium 4 should be avoided. Stay tuned. You'll be surprised by the stupid mistakes that Intel made with this chip.

Menchise Posted May 25, 2001 Report Posted May 25, 2001 OK, that saves me some time. I already had a copy of the results analysis page from emulators.com which I was going to use as evidence, but since that's one of the previously mentioned links, I can just move on to something else.I have a Pentium III 1GHz CPU, which includes the 256Kb L2 cache. According to all the evidence, my processor is even faster than a 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4! I think I'm going to hold on to the P3 for a while. At the moment, it still exceeds recommended specs, and that's more than enough for me.

But take a Thunderbird 1ghz and you will se a major speedup. and don't be afraid by those fools that says that winXP and all compatible programs will be optimised for p4's
