Supreme Cmdr Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 I was planning on picking this up this weekend; but man, I've seen some pretty scathing reviews. In fact, I just received my PC Gamer (UK) and they shredded it across four pages - giving it a final score of 47%.
CommanderJohnson Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 I almost pre-ordered it, and after the last post, i'm glad I didn't. I was about to, but then I thought for a second and realized that the only game that actually lived up to all of it's HUGE hype was BCM, and then I additionally realized that Derek Smart wasn't developing it, so then I figured i'll wait to see the reviews (since the pre-order offer for Rengegade SUCKED. 3 new player skins and a music CD? Game music is usually BAD, and 3 MP skins aren't going to help me survive a rocket hit, are they?) I'll stick to games with little hype and good reviews. Or BC games.
Epsilon 5 Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 VoodooExtreme gave it a 55% See the review link and comments here I have a friend who says it rocks, but I think it sucks (althought I only tried the demo, which contains the worst map of them all as it's said)
Guest $iLk Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 I've got it, I don't know why they are so upset. I don't like PC Gamer, because their reviewers tend to be *******s, and pander to certain personal tastes rather than focusing on a games strongpoints. Anyhoo, Renegade is fun as hell for me, even though it's set in the Tiberian Sun timeline, it's fun as hell. Somewhat cheesy lines, but there is also some funny $hit in there. Single Player rocks, MP is okay, but could be better.
Cmdr Nova Posted March 8, 2002 Report Posted March 8, 2002 Hm... I didn't even know it was coming out until I saw it at Target last night. Looks like a decent game, though. I don't know what to say. I'll probably try a demo some time. And a 55%? That's even worse that BCM! Worse than Daikatana, according to one of those VE diehard guys on that comment sheet. Think about it: a game that's rated worse than Daikatana--the game that took John Romero down. Heh.
Supreme Cmdr Posted March 8, 2002 Author Report Posted March 8, 2002 I'm going to wait for the inevitable price drop before picking it up for my library. I probably won't play it.

J.Smith Posted March 9, 2002 Report Posted March 9, 2002 Glad I decided to save some money and buy RAINBOW SIX with the expansion instead of C&C: Renegade!
CommanderJohnson Posted March 9, 2002 Report Posted March 9, 2002 quote:Originally posted by LordDavid: Waiting for Jedi Knight 2 Ditto. I already pre-ordered it. That game will rock.
Sunanta Posted March 9, 2002 Report Posted March 9, 2002 I dunno--the C&C Renegade demo seems quite fun to me...
Epsilon 5 Posted March 9, 2002 Report Posted March 9, 2002 quote:hehe kinda like american mcgees alice? god that 5ux0r3dNah, my friend got it, and while i don't likE the style of the game, it was pretty well done. quote:I dunno--the C&C Renegade demo seems quite fun to me...How long did you played? Play for a little more while on servers of all sizes (from 6 players to 64 players) and you'll see unimpressive it gets. At least IMHO.

Hunted Posted March 13, 2002 Report Posted March 13, 2002 Okay guys i've got the game...IT ROCKS...multiplayer owns! I DON"T KNOW WHY IT GOT BAD REVIEWS!!!... SC...get it it's outstanding, it's an improved tribes 2 with a c&C style!
CedricB Posted March 13, 2002 Report Posted March 13, 2002 Looks like an excellent attempt by the people over at Westwood. I did a little internship over there way back in 98. Lots of fun! Well... it's not their genre and I think it blows dikatana away. Then again, I could praise the porclain god "Ralph" and get better results that what John Romero put out. Maybe some of the integration in BCM will give them some better ideas. I don't agree with the rating of "Quake II Graphics." It looks more like half-life if you ask me. My 2 lyras MP... so close and yet so far.
Põdi Posted March 14, 2002 Report Posted March 14, 2002 quote:Originally posted by Jokis: Get Medal of Honor instead.Got it yesterday. Will install tonight (while the missus is at work ). Was thinking about Renegade, but having read the diverse reviews, I would really like to try a SP demo (Not a big MP fan, I'm afraid) before I make a decision. Don't you think it's interesting that a SP demo has not been released yet? Methinks Westwood had an idea that SP wouldn't be too well received, which is why they pushed MP so much. Thoughts?
Jokis Posted March 14, 2002 Report Posted March 14, 2002 Well, I got this to say. I wasnt that impressed with the MP demo and if what you say is true, I can only shudder to think how bad the SP demo could've been.
Scrivener Posted March 14, 2002 Report Posted March 14, 2002 Stay away from MoH unless you can return it for something else. It's good-looking, but short, the AI is on par with Quake 2, and there's no blood. And it's short (One sitting - 5 hours, hard difficulty). The MP is deathmatch and team deathmatch, and you don't get that many levels either! Renegade on the other hand, is a FAR superior game. While it's not destined to be an instant classic (WTF are reviewers smoking?) the MP is the most fun I've had in a while. The single-player campaign is sort of short (10-15 hours) and the latter levels get Serious-Samish (Lots of baddies everywhere) but Renegade is worth the price of admission for the multiplayer alone. The developers are giving the game, mod cmmunities, and fan base an extraordinary ammount of support (Kind of like one legendary indie I know of). Most of the lag issues from the demo are gone unless you join a server with 100+ people. And it's really meant for Broadband anyway. But Renegade is DEFINATELY worth picking up. Commander Elio Jason Posted March 14, 2002 Report Posted March 14, 2002 quote:Originally posted by LordDavid: Waiting for Jedi Knight 2 have patience grasshopper believe me it'll be out soon and PC GAMER'S(US) already got a scoop of it. like anyone cares anyway. well if you want a game that is set during a war period and your one man doing a job, try Return to Castle Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor. oh yeah, if you want REALISM and a great game made from the same guys at Red Storm, get Ghost Recon. trust me you'll thank me. oh and if you want total IMMERSION get BCM. ok i'm done here.
Shadow_Wolf33 Posted March 15, 2002 Report Posted March 15, 2002 all I can say is...BCM got a low review...yet this is the best game out. Period. Renegade got bad reviews, and, well...its not the best game ever, but its still pretty good. Its kinda like a mix between tribes 2 and Half life...no jetpacks, but lotsa sweet vehicles
Guest Hellbinder[CE] Posted March 15, 2002 Report Posted March 15, 2002 Scrivener, I own both and all i can say is i totaly and COMPLETELY disagree with you. The Ai is Q2 leve? i cant even believe you said that. The Ai in MOHAA is pretty dang great. Renegade AI is a pathetic JOKE. every single review site has said that about it. nod troops just stand there while you sgoot them! it goes downhill from there. All they do to try and compensate for the horrid ai is make all the nod troops frikking sharp shooters. No blood... Umm the last time i checked Renegade ot only has no blood but goes "doink" when you kill someone. LOL I cant see where anything you said about either game is even remotely accurate. However I do like both games. MOH has vastly superior graphcs, AI, Terrain, models And awesome very intense objective/team matches. MOH has 5 objective maps 5 Team DM maps and 5 Dm maps. oh and much much better model animation and player movement. Renegade has cool C$C mode and fun class based team play. Good game balance for the most part. However the weapons are wimpy and many times just dont make sense. like firing 3-4 rockets at the feet of an enemy and not killing them. The WORST lag on any online game I have EVER played. they have a total of 10 online maps 6 of witch are supported with C&C mode. The best thing that renegade has going for it are the vehicles. That counts for a LOT. They add a fantastic dynamic to the game that no one else has in a FPS. I especially enjoy being a tech and following a Mamoth tank around keeping it going. Bottlom line, Unless you are a diehard C&C fan, i doubt you will like Renegade very long. the vehicles may draw you in though, if you can get past some wierd game design issues and HORRID lag. MOH is fantastic in every aspect, creating some of the most memorable game experiences ever, like the assult on Omaha beach. It is a WW2 game so ot wont be everyones cup o tea either. bigest gripe i have about this game is they need to release the map tools to the public soon. the Quality of MOH speaks for itself as it is usually second or third at Gamespys top 5 games by players list. averaging around 4,500 players much of the time. Renegade DEMO has more players on it that the full game. Part of that is doe to westwood online, but even then the most i ever see is a few hundred players at a time.
