I'm trying to get my money from the VA...first I have to fight them for a MONTH to get the info right and ensure I'm recieving the correct amount...then the credit union I have accounts at closes my checking account due to inactivity..which is the account I set up for my VA money to go to ..

Then, I'm told that the money will just be sent to the savings account. Now they tell me that it won't, the check will be sent back. So I try to call VA to change the account and their lines are like down or something!

AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

These people SERIOUSLY need to pull their collective head out of their 4th point of contact!

It's always been a wonder to me why the Federal government can't seem to hire competent employees.

I mean it's a cushy job with short hours, good pay, good benefits and a boat load of paid holidays.

Then again it might be all of their policy manuals that are thicker than a New York phone book and as easy to read as stereo instructions written in Japanese.

I feel your pain . Good luck, you're gonna need it. You can't reach them by phone because nobody is there yet. They're all stuck in the traffic jam on the capitol beltway. I guess that's why the president travels to Andrews AFB via helicopter.

Kiran, I work for a congressional office -- we handle VA cases like yours all of the time. Believe me, VA is one of the worst bureaucratic quagmires -- they can be very frustating.

Contact your local representative. You'll have to sign a privacy form which gives him or her written permission to look into your case, but it should be fairly simple for them to contact the VA and clear this up. If you don't know who your Congressman is, go to www.house.gov. You can type in your zip code and find out.

Hope this helps!!

They don't pay enough. It is my belief "they" (state and local included) should pay near private sector wages to get good employees. To get such wages I also feel Civil Service protection should be loosened and allow for firing of imcompetence or low volume of work.

9 hours on the job (one hour unpaid lunch) standard hours. Good pay is up for debate. General Clerks like Kiran is running into probably don't get near what they are worth. No one works for the govt out of love of country (military excluded). Good benefits generally yes. Lot's of paid holidays generally yes. State and local get a few less holidays than the feds.

Could be some of that too.

As for Cushy. Hmmmmm, being a clerk and dealing with the public is worse than being in retail. Or be maintenance and having to keep the air conditioner going. Or the mechanic having to keep the fleet going.

Contact your local representative.

My argument above aside, that sounds like great advice.

At the very least, you'll give someone at the VA a headache. But seriously, it doesn't cost you anything except a phone call and a stamp to mail back the privacy form. The caseworker will do all the legwork for you and see if it can be pushed it along.

It would be helpful to have a letter explaining the history of the situation and copies of any relevant paperwork to enclose with the PF. We're dealing with so many cases, it always helps to have the constitutent's own words in front of us in case the agency has a question.
