jamotto Posted July 22, 2004 Author Report Posted July 22, 2004 Not likely, as I think there is only one battleship remaining in the fleet and it is in mothballs waiting to be scrapped. Unfortunately, the age of the battleship appears to have ended many, many years ago.

It would not be too hard to reactivate them, as they have both been modernized with ther latest cruise missiles etc, they did fight in the first Gulf war. It is NOT necassarily the strength of the ship, as it's psychological impact, an Aegis cruiser can do 5-10 times more damage then a battleship ever could, but just the sight of one of these AWESOME ships, is enough to scare any enemy silly. Also, if we modernized them just a little bit more, they would make an incredible platform for weapons deployment. THe age of the battleship is not wuite over yet, I think they may have one more lifetime left to them. They were WELL built ships, and with a little TLC and modernizing could and will compete with any modern warship.

After some research I found out I was wrong, there are four battleships remaining: USS IOWA (BB-61), USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62), USS MISSOURI (BB-63) and the USS WISCONSON (BB-64). All of them are Museums except the USS IOWA.

There is already a mod to stick cruise missiles on them, and I've heard somewhere or another talk about putting rocket sustainers on the shells for the big guns. Talk about being able to reach out and touch someone...

Only the Iowa Class ships really fit this requirement and possibly the North Carolina Class and or South Dakota Class.

You are absolutely correct, the Iowa class would be the best ones for such duties. I believe that the psychological effects of these ships are alone enough reason to bring them back. As weapons platforms, they are just incredible. The Iowa class is an incredible piece of technology in it's own right, but updating with a few modern conveniences will make them downright scary. Then again, I LOVE Battleships, there is nothing else like the site of a battleship underway with a full crew. Just incredible.... Although an aircraft carrier group is an insane sight as well. Most countries have 1 or 2 such groups, we have like 11 or something crazy like that. We are shoving 7 of them through the strait between Taiwan and China, just to give China a clue. That's a LOT of firepower......
