I just came across BMG at a store while looking for Homeworld, and was immediately fascinated by the scope of what the developper's of this game are trying to do. It was the first time I bought a game before reading reviews, and once I got home, I read them and they were were not the best reviews, but I also found out that the fans of this series are different from every other gamer. They are not in it for the pretty graphics or shooting sprees, but actually enjoy the complexity, difficulty and freedom and appreciate what the game developper's are trying to do. Well, I fall among this group of fans. I realized very soon that BMG has its flaws, it crashes, no in-game tutorials, some really flawed flight physics. But, I see that the developpers are trying to always improve and I admire what they are trying to accomplish.

In any case, I'm here. I still don't know how things work around here, and I was hoping for some guidance. There seem to be several groups and organizations (the fleets) that seem to be part of an online multiplayer environment. I would like to join at some point once I get the hang of things (which looks like it's going to take a long while, long hours of reading, testing and experimenting).

Looking forward to meeting you all,

Adalla

Ahh... Welcome to the community

All you need to know to stay alive here is to follow the rule's established by the admins, and you'll be fine

As for understanding the game, it'll take some time. You can't expect to learn everything about this game within a week, but you can learn a good portion.

Just take your time, read the book, experiment with different ships to find your style, then you feel you are ready, think about which fleet fancy's your style

As for your issues.... I would suggest you go with UC as it's far more stable than BCG was (at least that's my experience, as I had crash's with BCG as well, but have yet to have ONE crash with UC or UC-Awa)

If all else fails, check the tech forum's to see how to solve the issues... most are user related.

And don't hesitate to ask questions

Thanx for the welcome. Yeah, it'll take some time to learn it. I downloaded the UC demo, and it does seem to have a bit nicer graphics, though some commands have changed, and I was like the ONE thing I managed to learn, the one KEY, and now it doesn't work lol

Anyways, can you tell me about the fleets and the MP that goes on here?

hey welcome to the forums! The fleets that are on the forum are the same fleets that are in the manual. http://www.3000ad.com/fleets/index.shtml will tell yu just about everything you need to know about the fleets themselves.

For MP its mostly migrated to UCAWA and we are in th opening stanges of testing a new concept called Fleet Action which basically moving fleets around to fight for various sectors with the intent on completely destroying an enemy fleet and capturing territory.

Hi Elipse,

nice to meet you. Yeah, I had never heard of the Battlecruiser series until I saw it while browsing for new games at the store, so I found out after I bought BGM that there was UC and UCAWA out there. Looks like I'll be making another trip to the store sometime.

Is UC a lot better than BGM? I played the demo today, and it looked nice. I havn't played BGM enough to notice all the differences.

What attracted me to this particular forum was the community aspect. This series has a lot of potential for community development. The freedom of gameplay, the open-universe, they all help make a MP environment very attractive.

But I have an idea of how things could be to be really awesome, and I don't know if what I have in my mind is what exists here. The idea of players forming groups and teams, more experienced players obviously assuming leadership roles and teaching new players. And forging relationships over time with your fellow teammates and commanders, and even those people who end up being your "enemies". It just all sound really good and has a lot of potential.

I'm here to find out if that's what this place is about. So far, it seems that way. Though I get the idea that there has been a lot of inactivity. Most of the forums have few posts within the last 30 days, some don't have posts within the last year. That's always a bit of a turn-off for newbies, but I've been admin of online communities for years, and I know how it is, and I know the value of members who stick around even during the inactive/tough times.

Anyways, enough rambling. I'll check out info on the fleets. Also, the manual mentions to check descriptions of races and castes online, I'm assuming it's somewhere on this website. Could you link me anyways in case I don't find it?

Thanx, glad to be aboard, sirs

P.S. How does promotion work around here? Do you start off as a fighter pilot and move up? I read somewhere that you go through the Academy training and you can take command of a ship right away. Just curious.

Hi and welcome to the forums. The fact that you actually have your sys profile in your sig, indicates that you're well on your way to learning how stuff works around here!

Anyway, from looking at your system, it is highly unlikely that any game higher than UC, will work on your laptop. In fact, if you played the demo, did you play any of the planetary missions to see how the game works with your system?

While the demo is an indicator of the game, it is only a very small portion of the game and you may have performance issues with the full game.

Adalla:

Each game in the series keeps pushing the envelope a bit father, so yes I'd say that UC is an improvement over BCMG in many aspects.

The forum has had its ups and downs but there are a core group of regulars who have been here for years

I think the manual is talking about the apendices and should be in the docs folder from your install.

Promotion is usually a fleet thing. Various fleets handle the actual promotion differently

I havn't tried the planetary missions yet. I did try to achieve planetfall for Earth, Jupiter and one of Jupiter's moons, but every time I ended up giving up because it took so long to get there

But I'll try an actual planetary mission where you start off on the planet next time.

I'll let you know how my system handles it. Yes, it's 2 years old, and nowadays you get laptops that rival desktop's in gaming performance, but the MR9700 handles Homeworld 2, Flight Sim 2004, Rome Total War, and other graphic intensive games (though sometimes I need to trade detail for fps).

One thing I noticed, everybody seems to be a commander of a ship around here. I realize that's the core of the BC series, but what about fighter pilots? How would it work if you choose to go for a pilot career, is your rank still commander? Can you dock on somebody else's ship?

Posted

adalla select a planet as your target in the right VDU.(monitor) click on it with your mouse to activate it. then press , or . to scroll forward and backward. then press shift+9 and it'll ask if to establish planet fall, press y for yes.

should be easy.

Posted

I thought planetfall only occured at or below 50 clicks/km/miles (whatever those units are lol).

But I'll tryit next time.

Btw, I bought UC

So could someone guide me on how to get involved in some multiplayer action? Multiplayer training (if it exists here) woudl be great

Thanx

Also forgot, had a couple questions.

Is UC supported in MP on this site? or does it have to be UC Gold, UC SE or UCAWA?

I really don't want to spend any more money, I already spent 50 bucks in 3 days on BCG and UC.

Also, if someone could explain how MP works in general. Do you have say a fleet attack another, and people follow commands from their superior officers (as denoted in rank on this forum) fleet commanders giving order to CC commanders and CC commanders giving order to fighter pilots?

Posted

for the most part its nowhere near that complex right now.

Posted

Roger. I was trying to figure out if there is a site out there that actually uses military ranks in-game. I guess this site doesn' either

we (the fleets) do have the ability to set up UC MP servers on request (we'd have to know the date and time for the session and arrange to have a server up at that time), we don't have any permanent servers set up for UC atm, just for UCAWA. Those servers are just for members of a fleet to use, so you'd need to join a fleet first to use those.

Fleets also have their own training programs, and organise interfleet matches.

All your UC MP problems will be solved by joining a fleet, and replaced with different ones . Seriously though, fleet membership is the way to get involved in mp.

If you are talking about the Commander title being in a lot of people's sigs, it's mostly because they are a member of a particular fleet. A fleet member has to have his sig written a certain way as per that fleet's regulations.

If you wanted to go for a Pilot's Career and joined a fleet, your best bet would be to ask the Fleet Commander how you should word your sig.

Ben is correct. Fleet membership is the way to get involved in MP.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

lol, thanx for the welcome guys. Yeah, I'm kindo hooked. I'll be more hooked when I start understanding things and stop asking questions as if I'm a freshman taking a Ph.D level physics on particle physics.

Well, does that mean out of the 30 or so sigs I've read so far, NONE have chosen to be a pilot?

Also, if someone does choose to be a pilot, would he be able to dock at a Commander's CC? I.E would you be able to have a group of players, including a commander, some fighter piltos, shuttle pilots, etc.

Or is it one player per craft? So if ur commanding a carrier, it's just you and 100 NPCs, if ur a pilot, it's just u and ur fighter and ur on your own or with a squadron of NPCs or MP, but not part of a carrier?

Lastly, do you need a server for MP? Could you not host an IPX game? Like give ur IP to some folk and set up MP with your computer being the host?

Thanx

Welcome to our addiction, Cadet.

Nah, he's not hooked. That can't be diagnosed till he pulls up a dead thread.

Everyone has their own ship (except if you're a marine on the surface), you can choose various careers giving you a fighter, shuttle, transport, cruiser, or carrier. In an official fleet match or mission, you'll be assigned a specific role within the flight group, as well as a specific ship type for the mission.

You can just give someone your IP and have them join your game, if your upload speed is good enough, but running a server and client on the same machine requires a powerful rig, otherwise you'll need a dedicated server to connect to (requiring a second computer and copy of the game for whoever is hosting, unless they won't be joining the session). We just have several of us with good upload speeds and spare machines, and one very powerful permanent server with a very powerful upload speed (2.4Mbit/s), I'll see if I can get UC installed on that as well (at the moment that just has UCAWA on it for the fleet season).

Oh it'll happen. I just havn't gotten around to it yet

Yeah, looks like I'm always a step behind. I didn't know about UC at all when I picked up BCG. I didn't realize UC was in the same series (it was on the back cover of BCG). When I got home, I saw the forums and noticed BCG and UC tech support were not offereed anymore. And I was like great! lol. Then I went out and got UC, and thought UC was supported here, to find out only UC "GOLD" and SP and AWA were...

So, in other words, I would appreciate if I could get a change to play SOME UC before I go out and get UCAWA sometime. Is UCAWA or US SP more recent?

Also, do MP events occur regularly or on demand?

Lastly, what do I do to get started?

thanx

Oh, and I am actually thinking of returning UC and getting either UCAWA or UCSE.

Should I get UC SE? That's teh latest one right? Would I be able to play UC online, since UCAWA is the on supported the most online, does UCSE allow you to play on UC, UCG and UCAWA MP games?

Thanx,

Right now we've been running a test season of Fleet Action. Once the kinks get worked out of it, it'll be one great way for fleets to interact in MP. More information on Fleet Action is hosted over at the ISS Fleet webpage.

Join a fleet! Take a look at the different fleets to help you decide what fleet is right for you. Also take the time to read the Fleets FAQ as it will answer a lot of your questions.

If you still have questions on a particular fleet, post your question in a relevant thread in the appopriate fleet's forum on 3000AD.

I, for one, would like to ask you to think about the Insurgents. We're always looking for new members to help in the fight for freedom against Galcom forces! We may be a little outmanned and outnumbered against the various Galcom fleets, but we do pack a bit of punch!
