  1. Why don't you just fdisk the drive and start again?
  2. What you might find interesting is the Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Although probably aimed at a younger audience, they are excellent Fantasy books and well worth a read. Hell I enjoyed them a lot and I'm an old fat knacker
  3. Have you read the other Tolkien books? Silmarillion, Book of Lost Tales, Book(s) of Unfinished Tales? They give a great background to LOTR and the history of Middle Earth; where Sauron came from, who he was etc. The Lost Tales also have earlier transcripts of some ot the more popular Silmarillion stories such as the story of Turin Turambar and the tale of Beren and Luthien. Did you know Aragorn and Arwen are related and that Arwen is Galadriel's granddaughter (as well as being her 5th cousin)? Read the Silmarillion and you'll find out how.
  4. Oh Grayfox, you're a man after my own heart. I really miss my rugger days (had to give it up cos of injury/operations etc). I used to play flank-forward/No. 8 and when I got too slow (fat?) I went to Lock-forward. The game is in my blood. I used to love nailing the opposition No. 8 as he picked up from the base of the scrum. It usually ended up with me being rucked to hell and having a dozen parallel stud scrapes down my back, but damn, was it worth it! Then there was the drinking afterwards
  5. Bovine = cattle Ovine = sheep
  6. Ok, this was just voted the funniest joke in the UK: Two friends were out hunting, having a great time. Suddenly, one of them collapses having had a massive heart attack. In a panic his friend phones the emergency services on his mobile phone, 'Help me, I think my friend is dead, we're in the forest and he just collapsed and isn't breathing. What do i do?' 'OK' says the operator 'Calm down, first thing to do is to make sure he really is dead' She hears a single gunshot over the line, the man comes back on 'OK, now what?'
  7. IceCold, the Spy Who Loved Me was Roger Moore's first Bond outing. They call me Paddy Pedantic
  8. My wife got a nasty little gastroenteritis bug which has been doing the rounds of the rugrats lately. I think I managed to avoid it so far. Our 2 and a half year old was up till 4am one morning throwing up, and 'er indoors had a similar experience he following morning.
  9. Found the sp demo very Deus Ex-ish in atmosphere, which is a good thing. About 1/3 the way through the big download. The interface takes a bit of getting used to.
  10. Got it working last night, but was tough finding a decent server. Eventually found one in Norway of all places where at least my pings hovered around 100 - 150, which is playable. Still pretty jerky at times, I hope the final release is better.
  11. Hey $ilk, how did you get around he refresh rate thing? Or didn't you have to fiddle with it? I'm using the same det drivers as you, but I'd d/led the refresh rate fix utility and now I can't get the game to work, even if my adaptor says it's set at 60Hz.
  12. Well, if I could get it to run, I'm sure I would enjoy it. In XP, it crashes before loading (and yes, I tried setting the refresh rate to 60Hz) and in 98se, it locks up when i try to enter or create a game. Any ideas?
  13. Hmm, was McVeigh a muslim? And I think the Independent article was written with tongue shoved firmly in cheek. It's our British sense of humour, it's called IRONY. Basically, Europe has, potentially, more to fear from Middle East 'rogue states' due to the geographical juxtaposition. However, we see less of a threat than the American administration. Yet, if it came to it, we could handle it ourselves thank you very much. Such states are basically poor, third world nations lacking the resources or the manpower to threaten western civilisation as we know it. [ 08-12-2002, 04:33 AM: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]
  14. Received in email this morning ----------------------------- If you had bought £1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth £49.00. With Enron, you would have £16.50 of the original £1,000.00. With Worldcom, you would have less than £5.00 left. If you had bought £1,000.00 worth of Stella one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the bottles for a 5p deposit, you would now have £107.00. Based on the above, current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle. -------------------------- Couldn't agree more.
  15. As always, I'm late on parade with this one. IMHO there is no-one more fanatical about the BC series than E5 (other than SC himself of course). Such fanaticism should be encouraged. OK, so he goes over the top with his opinions sometimes. So what? It's no big deal and is not hurting anyone. I really do think that his immaturity (sorry E5 but it's true) leads to a bit of impulsive behaviour now and again. He is French Canadian after all . Take a step back and think there's a lot worse going on than a kid expressing his opinions. If I had voted, it would have been to keep him. Banning should be reserved for absolute loose cannons, which he definately is not. That's my view for what it's worth. [ 07-25-2002, 03:50 AM: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]
  16. I've had half a dozen or so of these in the last 3 months. There is a whole website dedicated to them, but I can't recall the URL at the mo.
  17. Race, I've been busy with Morrowind and MOHAA multiplayer recently, as well as working on my thesis, so i don't get much time to spend on ALL the enjoyable things in life. I do pop by now and again to check out latest news, gossip etc. As for Switzerland revoking neutrality? Give it 5 years tops.
  18. Race, Yes, we in Europe do get more vacation time. Over her in Switzerland it's a standard 4 wks plus public holidays. My last job in the UK I had 5 weeks (or was it 6?) plus public holidays. And yes, I have 'thrown a sicky'. Several times. More often than not when my back is feeling a bit stiff, but certainly not enough to warrant a full blown sickday and visit to the local butcher. BTW haven't been in for a while, how are we all?
  19. I thought the guy that puched him had since been suspended. Or am I wrong?
  20. It's all spyware. If you're any good, they contact you and try and recruit you. If you refuse, they dig up some dirty from your harddrive to blackmail you. Allegedly
  21. That isn't a million miles away from me, in fact. Very sad.
  22. Nice one Emmett, congrats to you and the missus. Now, enjoy the craic while it lasts..........
  23. Did a bit of investigating, there's a whole slew of them and you can read them here some are really quite funny. Yeah I remember the thing SC posted. Similar, but now they seem to be going the 'official' line.
