A cool thing to try...

Play scenario 1.

Stop your cruiser near a jump gate.

Exit the ship and fly over to the center of the gate.

Use 'f9' to look around you and then zoom out until you are a speck.('Home' or 'End', I forget which).

Feel your insignificance.

Move out of the center of the gate.

Then go to tacops and order your cruiser to jump through the gate, watch it disappear.

Then you can order it back by telling it to fly to you.

Is it just me or can the AI board your ship at any given time no matter the current condition of your ship or range of the target. For example I had just left a station and there was an enemy ship about 400,000K away and all of a sudden poof I have intruders on board. My shields were up my ship was 100% functional and no enemy ships or other ships for that matter were even relatively close. My marines did layeth the smack down but there should be ways to prevent this from happening. I can see it happening if the target was close enough to use their transporters and my shields were down or even sending a shuttle over once I was disabled (assuming they dont have a transporter). Also I am told that in no way can I board enemy ships in a simular fasion period. =(

You cannot transport over to the enemy ships, but a cloaked ship can and will transport their troops to yours.

If your cloak is on, they cannot board your ship, but that is the only time. All other times are open game to them, they will transport to your ship at random and screw with you all the time. also, watch your cargo, they will steal stuff as well. turn off your launch control unless you are launching, and then hope that your marines can get them.

That is all for now, although you never know what the SC might do. The AI and engines in this game are incredible, and they will kick your ass if you let them!!!

There were no cloaked ships near me just one ship and it was incredibly far away. I had just left the station and the instant the transision was over I got the message.

As soon as intruders came on board I did shut off launch control and even sent a few marines in their direction. It's almost like they were hiding on the station and somehow got on my ship while I was docked. Or else they just transported to my ship from about 400,000k away smile.gif

I just have one question: Exactly how do you know that there wasn't a cloaked ship sitting next to you? That is, afterall, the purpose of cloaking technology. smile.gif

I do not think there was any cloaked ships near me because I had several probes active in the system and I was there for some time before and after and there was nothing there. Assuming there was a cloaked ship it would have had to decloak eventually right? Or I would have at least been getting some static in my NID or CVD or some data from the probes. cwm13.gif

Probes won't give you any more information than your normal information gathering equipment.

Never underestimate the intelligence of the AI. The static "appears" to increase/decrease depending on the proximity of the cloaked ship to your own. It is highly possible for an enemy ship to jump in system, transport infiltrators to your ship and then leave the system.

In reality though, transporters work on the same range system that your scanners work. In short, if they can see you, they can board you.

Transporting is not range based. So yes, they can board you from clear across the region or from the station.

The Beta testers had requested some relaxing of the boarding rules and I have made a note of a few things that I'd like to do. Expect some relaxation of the boarding rules, shortly.

Also, I have, in my todo list, the ability

to have you board other command crafts and stations with your own troops using shuttles or transporter. In fact, the new Perscan was designed to do just that and currently supports it. As you would be able to use it to track your troops on the target ship, as you would in your own ship. This will give you the ability to know when to get them the hell outta there when things get hot.

Unfortunately, this feature is way down on my wishlist and probably won't make it into the first game release, but will DEFINITELY appear in a patch - since I'm notorious for doing stuff like that (adding new stuff, along with bug fixes, in patches).

Once the first person, terrain and multiplayer are 100% finished, this is the first wishlist (my wishlist, damnit biggrin.gif) item that I plan on addressing.

Glad to hear there will be changes made to AI boarding rules. If we could board other ships or stations with transporters or by docking shuttle craft that would be simply incredible.

Maybe change the AI boarding rules to reflect the conditions players will have to meet in order to be successfull. First of all I wish transporters had a limited range. Second I wish the shields of the ship you're attemping to board must be down.

Please add player boarding to the higher priority list smile.gif it would add so much and rock so hard.

Like I've said in a previous post, I'm new to Battecruiser series, though very fond of the Elites. And I have to say I'm simply overwhelmed by the complexity of this game. I dont remember feeling so daunted since Mechwarrior 2 was released.

Something I'm curious about, however, is the entering of a planet's atmosphere. Since there will be seperate engines for surface flights, how will the transition work? Will it be seamless like First Encounter and require you to manage things like heat and air friction, or will it take one of the lower roads (ie: Canned Cinematic or Instantaneous Translocation)???? The answer is likely covered somewhere, but I'm too busy reading the manual and BCM demo info to look it up.

Scrivener,

In BattleCruiser 3000, the space to planet-fall transitions were cinematic sequences of your ship (fighter, shuttle, or BC) flying into the planet. It would activate at around 150 thousand km from the planet/moon depending on the size. It only showed cinematics for the craft you were flying. Also, the max speed of your craft is slightly reduced in planet/fall mode (just your normal drag situation).

I can't wait until I see BCM's new terrain engine and planet-falling with the new looking craft!

Hi all. "Speaking from beyond the grave", your old friend Commander DeSylva is watching over your actions...*grin*.

As much as it hurts me to admit it, I have neither a fast enough connection, nor the minimum specs, to play the demo. I got all excited when I realised that 1) My work had a SUPER fast connection that laid mostly ilde during night shifts, and B) The computers at work are ridiculously overpowered for what they run, with 600MHz processors and 8Mb 3d cards, as well as 128Mb RAM each. The demo d/led in a little under an hour - I was very impressed. I tried to install it - and then realised that the neanderthals our hospital employs for Computer Services were running Win95 - WIN95 - on these high end computers.

*AAAAAAAARGH!!!!*

I'm burning with curiosity, and would love to know the answer to two questions.

1) I've seen pics of most of the Special FX from the beta, but one thing I haven't seen are engine trails a' la' Homeworld, which were in the original model mock-ups. Has this feature been implemented?

2) Is radar ranging in space regions in? That is, can you see the entire region with your radar, like BC3K v2.0, or do you have a limit to your radar range (like Freespace/WC), so, for example, if a ship in a region is more than X km away, it will not show on your radar?

Option 2 was the feature I was most looking forward to seeing, and the one that I thought would make this game truly succesful, even though when I left I understand it was only a possible inclusion. Imagine the way that the universe would be expanded if hidden bases couldbe located beyond radar range in a system? If atack fleets could apprach from an outer system area undetected? If Insurgents could create a base foothold on the moon, undetectable from Earth? If you actually had to put your ICs in patrols to detect enemy activity, rather than just sit in the middle opf the region and H-Jump them to the enemy as soon as they poked their noses into the region?

Anyway, I wax lyrical.

Well, time to get back to work, just thought I'd drop you all a line, I really wish I could see what this demo looks like, by the sounds of things it rocks something severe.

Fond memories,

DeSylva.

I'm also curious about the radar range...is it buried in some massive text file somewhere and i missed it, or has it not been discussed yet?

i don't think it had been discussed in the text files. i read most of them.

oh yeah, you can change the radar range of your scanner on the left, but i think you can still see anyone that isn't cloaked.

I've not managed to port the demo from my laptop to home PC yet, otherwise I would know the answer to this, but could anyone tell me if ramming is a feasable option?

(I'm thinking supplemented forward shields + large speed vs. already damaged ship)

Thanks.

if anyone can clarify the radar issue, maybe someone on the 3000ad team, or derek?

press Z to increase radar zoom

press shift-Z to decrease radar zoom

Ctrl-Z to set maximum radar zoom (smallest visibility, you can only see things that are crashing into you; its that close)

the gameplay is much better than lots of other games i've played, like allegience, and slightly similar games like homeworld. it's so much simpler to use, but it gives a great challenge AI wise. multiplayer is coming peeps...... watch out for me........ cwm43.gif

so i'm not late. not until 6:45 central. i'll see you all around 3 o'clock central (4 east)

Desylva: Nice to see you around again biggrin.gif

Nova: I I think SC wuld have to answer the radar thing. Not sure if I can say anything for or against without breaking the NDA. BTW all you did was post the kbrd commands to zoom in and out as far as I know it has nothingto do with the range of your radar.

Been monkeying around the demo again, and found yet another cool thing to look at, one that's not in-game (so this post belongs in this thread, right?). Check out all the 3D models in bcstudio.exe! (Ahem, I do believe this was suggested somewhere else by someone else, but as typical I neither remember who or where.)

Lots of stuff is in there we haven't even glimpsed in the demo, including the character models that will be *you* smile.gif Space stations, ground installations, the Insurgent New America asteroid (minus the installations/buildings), marines, ship models... But the icing on the cake for me was the ability to play the SFX animations! Wow, that was a very nice feature to include! I especially liked turning on the "destroy object" SFX and watching DED in action. You can also watch the hyperspace and cloaking animations up close too. It makes a very nice teaser, and an interesting break from the game-play.

Anyone else have any cool models/animations they've discovered in bcstudio, or in-game for that matter?

Yes, radar ranging is different in BCM - but not in the way that you might think. Rather than make the game even more complex, you and NPCs, can still see across the region, but you have to be within range to do anything about it. In other words, NPCs won't attack you beyond weapons range or even launch alert 5 craft beyond their breach range. e.g. if a station has a breach range of 250KM, they will ignore you until you come within this range. Its not that they can't see you, they just won't bother until you pose a clear and present threat.

I was planning on going with an all out radar blackout based on range - but decided against it, for gameplay reasons. The game is already too complex as it is.

For one thing, right now, you can cruise past a hostile station, and as long as you are not within its radar weapons or ship launch range, they will ignore you. In BC3K, no matter how far you were, you would still be prosecuted.

I thought this was pretty neat:

I was playing the first scenario and successfully defended the station. Then I started messing around with my shuttles. Having them tow disables and the like. Then a sentry entered the area and targeted my escorts. We were able to destroy him without loss. Then all of a sudden all kinds of blue dots started appearing on my radar. They were all kinds of merchant vessels coming to dock with the station! I was playing for quite a while after the mission had been completed before this happened. I flew real close to a few of them, it was cool. Just wondering if anyone else had stayed in the system long enough for this to happen?

A scorpion must grab it's prey before it can strike with it's Tail. Therefore, be concerned with the pincers, then the tail. Why fear artillery, when there are no enemy troops to keep you within it's range?

To answer Chillums question about ramming. It is feasible in a sence, but not at all practical. If I am correct, your shields only protect you from weapons and not collisions, althought ramming will most likely damage or destroy the other ship, it would also mean damaging your ship if not destroying it. Also remember, repairs are REAL time.
