Would it cross the boundries of the NDA to have somebody comment on whether or not they've gotten used to the change, any other effects it has on gameplay. I'm a little worried about the change too. I honestly don't think it was a good idea. Why repair at a station at all then? If your engineers are in the middle of a repair and you dock, does letting the station take over the repair speed things up, or does the station repair at the same speed as your own engineers? I'm willing to be persuaded by someone who actually finds it adds to the game.

Epsilon Someone told me, and I don't know how true it is, that Ottawa and Montreal are actually on a huge fault line. Every couple of years there's a little earth quake, but he said that one day, there's gonna be a huge one. Personally I don't buy it, but I'm still gonna make sure my house is quake ready.

What's kinda sad is that if you look at the Canadian part of the map, all the lights just north and to the right of the great lakes were able to out vote all of the other lights in the rest of the entire country and choose the Prime Minister. If you live in that section of the lights, (as I do) it's great. If you live anywhere else, it's gotta suck. Bad. [This message has been edited by Kush (edited 02-27-2001).]

Is there any way to view an edited log of the IRC chat that happened after?
-
I saw that! It was so funny I wet my pants.

Someone had a party over on the Voodoo Extreme forum. Derek, I gotta say, watching you in action on those boards, it's poetry.
-
Let me take that foot out of my mouth and try again. YOU ROCK!!!!! You and Darrin, and Pete. The pics look amazing and I'm sure they are nothing compared to the game in action. I order you, once the game is released to go on vacation. Do not think about the office. Do no think about any post release crap, or GCO or anything. Nothing! You understand me? The moment the game is out the door, get your behind on a beach, somewhere with a nice hotel, and a swim-up-bar, preferably in a nation where topless sunbathing is an acceptable social norm, and give yourself what you deserve after such a long, long haul. ps Don't tell the girlfriend about the topless part.

Great preview! And I noticed the new terrain photos. I have to say, I am very impressed! The terrain engine is really stunning. I hope you give the guys developing it a huge pat on the back!

Filter-carb!

Just a thought, has Derek ever considered putting the latest BC3K on the BCM disk as a bonus? Some other games have done this and it's a great way for someone who is new to the game to understand the history of its gameplay.

BTW Gryphon, was that the Interplay v2.x you saw at Radioshack or the Take Two version? (I'm serious about picking it up)
-
Gryphon, What part of town?!!!! I want to get a copy for a friend of mine. I have looked high and low.
-
Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I don't think there's any way of legally upgrading v1.0 to v2.x. If that's a brand new Take Two version, I think you're out of luck.

Blast from the past: Vintage CGW Article on BC3K
Kush replied to Steve Schacher's topic in Gaming Media News
SC, what's this Jeff Green guy like in person? I imagine he's a kind of friendly doofus kinda guy. And I mean that in the nicest way. -
Steve, the 'you' in "You included" was for YOU. I get the impression you are the oldest of the old, and wisest of the wise. Er maybe just old I think one day, not now, but eventually, it would be cool to have a place on this site with small bio's and a history of some of the Vets. We all know Derek is a fascinating guy, but just as intriguing are his soldiers at arms. Just a thought.

I thought as much, but the way it was worded, sent my imagination off in all directions. I saw the preview before I ever came to the forums and it made Rattler out to be this mysterious mythic figure. I really liked that. Alot of the guys here, are kinda mythic in stature. You included. It's cool. It's like you guys were able to look past the initial flaws to discover something only a few could see. It's like the Musketeers, or Jason and the Argonauts. Are there any interesting stories from the old days? Anything from the old Forum days. Any interesting "I got banned for..." tales. It was neat to hear from Echo, and her experiences. How about other women, how did they get involved.

I always wanted to know about Rattler and Parias. Kewl. Oh and Rattler, it's in this preview of BC3K v2 that mentions you. I assume you've seen it, but if you haven't, you should know what they said. http://www.gamesdomain.com/gdreview/zones/...ar99/bc3k2.html I'll cut and paste the paragraph where they mention you: 'It was then that I noticed a picture of another reviewer in the dossier. "Who is this?" I asked. General Greenhill cleared his throat and said, "You are not the first person we sent to find out what Derek is doing. This reviewer, code named Rattler, was sent to Derek's enclave a while ago with a mission similar to yours. The last word we received from him was the garbled ravings of a lunatic and he has since joined Derek as one of the leaders of his web site.' It was a fairly positive preview and most of it is obviously toungue in cheek, but this paragraph piqued my curiosity.

WOAH! Steve! You win! Hands down! I guess you've seen it all. And you stuck through it all. That was a blast from the past. I'd never seen the old Tradcom screen. I kinda like it better. Heh, heh. [This message has been edited by Kush (edited 02-18-2001).]

Echo, None of this is boring!!!! It's a hoot! Now only if you could talk to my wife, recruit her into the insurgents! I think she'd like that. So, who else is out there...
-
Okay, I need a good excuse to procrastinate here at work and so I've decided to start a thread on how some of you vets, (and not so vets) came to the BC universe and forums. I read somewhere that Rattler was actually a game reviewer that was sent to trash the game and never returned, lost in the BC universe. Is that true? What were some of the things that drew you into the game despite the hurly burly. What makes you stay. (If you want to sneak in any revelations about BCM that would pass the NDA, please feel free.) It may have been dealt with already on another thread. I don't care. I want to hear from anybody how they got drawn in. I'm just curious. And a little stir crazy, sitting outside the beta test, waiting to peel the plastic off the game that will own me. [This message has been edited by Kush (edited 02-17-2001).]

I would actually love to know more about the changes made to TacOps but alas, anyone playing the beta is under the dreaded NDA. I hope you beta testers are having fun!
-
Did I mention you can command everything in your fleet from the TacOps screen? A 3D zoomable(?) interface. Very Homeworld. Oh and of course that was just BC3k, I haven't even touched what you can do in BCM. The new terrain engine. Beam weapons. Multiplayer. Everything you spoke of and more is already in the game. No need for stinkin patches! This ain't no Freespace, this ain't no Homeworld, this ain't no foolin around.
-
I knew this was going to happen. Welcome Plasmic to the wonderful world of BCM! I take it from your post you're new to the original BC3K. Already in BC3k you can select fighters, or shuttles or ATV's individually, as a group or all at once. And you can give very specific commands to each. More specific than Homeworld and more detailed. Just off the top of my head, you can go to the TacOps screen, observe the surface of a planet, select waypoints for a couple of fighters a shuttle and a mining drone. Send them off to the planet giving the mining drone a command to mine, the shuttle a command to patrol, and the fighters a command to seek and destroy any enemy in sight. And at the same time, you can launch two other fighters to attack a pesky insurgent, jump in it the fighter and dispatch them personally, take their disabled ship using a tractor beam into a nearby space station for some experience points, then fly back to your Battlecruiser in time for afternoon tea. The command scheme is just as simple, but different. And I haven't even touched teleportation, trading minerals or cloaking. You can't do any of that in Homeworld. Not even close. You have just discovered the freedom. For more info on what you can do, Read the Fine Manual. (RTFM) If you have any more questions, head on over to the new commander section. And I'm sure someone will help you out.

I think a big fat link to the search engine on a clearly marked out Newbie board is a great idea. I'd even take it a step further, and put a big, fat link to the PDF manual right in the newbie board. I think the easier you make it for newbies to get information on their own the better. I think there are going to be fewer questions this time round. I think the redesign and training module will help alot. This game may be the most complex game ever. EVER. If BCM gets alot of new players, (which I really hope it does.) giving them a little helping hand will only make things better. But these issues are basically about site design. Something we can worry about after the game is released.
