The Insurgents now have a secret base on Active Worlds (yippee! ). Any Insurgent who uses the Active Worlds browser and wants to visit, please reply to this thread with the following message: "Request Landing Clearance". You will receive the coordinates in a private message. Do not give these coordinates to anyone who is not an Insurgent, especially if they're Galcom or Earthcom (they can go search for the secret passage ). Also, if you have any opinions about the base, post them here.

I am satisfied (for now). My office is on the other side of Galcom's World (EP5's building) in the Commanders' Village. Insurgent Commanders will be given details about the secret base that I built for them. All non-Insurgents are welcome to search for the secret passage that leads to it. It's not hard to find, but it's not easy either. [ 06-15-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

Hamblin, before someone decides to accept your inadvertent attempt to pick a fight ( ), I think you should consider what I have to say. quote: Would you be surprised if I said that the Battlecruiser Series was not my absolute, without a doubt, most favoured series of games on Earth? If I told you there were other games out there I'd choose to play over a game of the BC series? I don't think anyone here (at least not the SC) expects you to adopt BCM as your favourite game when it's released. From what I've seen and played, it's going to be outstanding, but I don't think it's going to go above the middle of the top ten list in my future gaming review site (under construction for six months and counting ). Then again, surprises do happen. quote: But in short, would it really matter? Do you think the SC cares whether his game is my favourite game or not? Of course not. So long as he gets his money, he'd be perfectly happy to have me use the box for a coaster, and the CD as a frisbee. Or even the other way around, if I feel like I want a bit of variety. I think the SC does care whether his fans like the game or not, especially when you consider that he has spent a significant portion of his lifetime trying to make his vision of 'The Game' come true. If he was only in it for the money, he would have abandoned BC a long time ago. In fact, the whole concept of BC is something that most money-hungry publishers try to avoid. What he is trying to do would be the equivalent of EA Sports hypothetically trying to combine NFL 2001, NHL 2001, FIFA 2001, and NBA Live 2001 into one product: EA Sports Millennium. In the context of making money, this is not a good idea because each product sold separately is more profitable and provides a better indication of which sporting codes are more popular among gamers. quote: So long as I continue to contribute to the BC RP universe in any way I can, do you think it matters that I don't immediately rush off to the shops the instant I discover BCM has come out, ready to hand over my hard earned money, whilst at the same time actively attempting to contain whatever drool happens to drip out of my salivating mouth, as I grip the box in my sweaty hands? You don't have to be a fanatic, to be a fan. I doubt that there are as many fanatics here as you think.

I finished my study earlier than expected (there's only so much you can study about Writing Skills), so I started building ahead of schedule. I have basically completed my office next to the BCM complex, as well as my secret .... ... ... ......... .......... Just a few more things to add to the buildings and I'll be satisfied (for now).

My first post in a while. Last night, I did my end of semester Java exam. As soon as I got home, I did some 'cheer up' building in Active Worlds. I have plans (secret plans ), which I will look forward to completing after the last exam before holidays (tommorrow evening).
-
I will be away for the next five days. Incoming exams (including a big one on Java) demand lots of study, which means less time for fun stuff. I'll be back on Friday or Saturday.

OK.

Live and learn. I just hope that while the staff are at it, they'll also fix the speed problem. Every visit I have made to Mifix has been slow.

I was just there a few minutes ago. I'm assuming that you made the glass dome. I made a worldwide call to all BC commanders, but no one was around. I visited the Hall of Fame and Rattler's Den. Nice buildings, although the residences suffer from the same problems as every other AW building with non-transparent walls: The interior is too dark. Aren't there any light bulb objects in Active Worlds?
-
quote: The reason that AW is so unused is that the graphics are extremely poor, no acceleration. I mean, i know it isn't about graphics, but walking in the alpha world is really yucky and sllllllooooowwwww.... That's one of the reasons why I stopped using it two years ago, because my 56k modem took forever to load the surroundings. I decided to give it another go after I got cable. The speed is better now, although the graphics haven't changed since '98. quote: I could try this weekend one morning. What world and adress? What time? (please specify GMT) The Commanders' Village is on Mars at 964N 907E. It's a big area, which includes AW residences for several commanders and an ISS training facility (although the sign has been removed). There is also a Galcom world, but there's nothing in it except a small lobby and an office for the SC with a very flimsy security fence to 'block out' unauthorized personnel (sorry SC, but you need a fence that goes all the way up to the ceiling, we Insurgents are getting in without a hitch ). Galcom world has also been untouched for a couple of years now (the BC3020AD banner is still there). [ 06-09-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

I reinstalled the Active Worlds browser a few weeks ago. Before then, the last time I had used it was over two and a half years ago. On all of my recent visits, nearly every single world was empty (only Alpha World and AWGate were constantly populated). I also visited the Commanders' Village on Mars for the first time (at least as long as I could remember), and several times after that, and it seems to be empty all the time (some of the structures are still incomplete). I also noticed a Commanders' Village newsletter that stopped running after just three issues in '98. Is anyone still using Active Worlds? [ 06-09-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

Interplay sold!! Another bites the dust

These days it's almost impossible for a developer to remain independent. Either you're bought out or you close down. This happened to one of my favourite game developers, Looking Glass Studios. LGS never made a bad game. In fact, everything they touched seemed to turn into gold pressed platinum (pun intended). They created the first 3D FPRPG (Ultima Underworld), one of the best flight sim series of the 90s (Flight Unlimited), and the best computer game of all time (System Shock). Unfortunately, not everything they touched turned into money. The only self-published game they ever made, the brilliant Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, was a commercial failure that left huge debts for the company, not to mention the first nail in its financial coffin. Things got so bad money wise that the owners of LGS tried to sell the company to Eidos. Unfortunately, Eidos was also losing money at the time, and turned down the acquisition. That was the end of it. quote: Fallout, and Fallout 2. Those were really nice. Don't forget the Descent series (best FPS ever made). [ 06-09-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ] -
The original question in this topic was about whether I was going to pre-order the game, not whether I was going to buy it at all. Perhaps I chose the wrong words to explain myself (again). I am excited about getting the game, but I prefer to go through all the demos first. This is because I'm not sure if my video card is going to work in BCM (though the indications are good so far). If I need to upgrade my video card, that's an extra $200 out of my wallet, which I don't have at the moment, which means that it'll take a little while longer for me to get the game with complete certainty that I will be able to play it. By the way, I do own a copy of BC3000AD (the Gametek release) which I patched up to v1.01D7C as soon as I got internet access. In fact, this was the first website I ever went to as soon as the modem started working. [ 06-09-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

I'm waiting for the other demos before I consider it.

What the hell is going on here?! That article said nothing about knife control. If Jaguar showed the article just to have another go at the gun control issue, I suggest he take a closer look at Japan. This country has the most strict gun controls in the world. Guess how many homicides they have per year as a result of guns, and compare that figure to the number that New York City has in a day.

Since no one has replied, should I assume that my descriptions are correct?

There is a very famous sentence from that book, but I can't remember the exact wording of it. Something about knowing when to fight, and when not to fight. Do you know what it is?

quote: Yep, if you wish, put it in your sig. Damn. The link is broken again. What the hell is happening at GeoCities?! Oh, well. I'll wait for the new logos to arrive before I put one in my sig. quote: What about a Bishamon fleet logo, Menchise? We still don't have one. Is there any way you can come up with a few prototypes for our Fleet to look at? I'd do it myself, but I'm not that artistically inclined! I may be artistically inclined, but my technical skills in computer aided drawing are limited. I'll see what I can do. P.S. Charles, I'll send it to you as soon as I get home. Maybe you could find a decent host for it since GeoCities is misbehaving. [ 06-07-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

quote: Hitler was afraid that attacking Britain would draw the US into the war too soon. Hitler wasn't afraid at all. In fact, he virtually dared the Americans to intervene when he declared war on them. quote: Well, chief - Canada has the SAME benefits that we do, is SURROUNDED by friendly nations, etc, yet they are not as powerful as we are. Not quite. The entire northern part of Canada is freezing cold all year round, and Canada's population is one tenth the size of America's. quote: Wrong. The US fully EXPECTED to be drawn into the war as early as 1940. There was heavy mobilization and recruitment efforts WELL underway before the Japanese attacked. True, but Roosevelt didn't have the popular support for entry into the war until Pearl Harbour. Without that support, deployment may not have occurred. quote: I don't believe so. It would depend upon whether or not the capture of Moscow would cause a cease in Russian resistance. That was not going to happen. The Russians even went to the extent of evacuating Lenin's coffin as the Nazis approached! They weren't going to give up for a second. quote: The other thing to note is that, even when the Germans were fighting during the winter, their supply lines were CRIPPLED, not completely cut-off. There was also the factor of entire tank units breaking down from the freezing cold. The Nazis lost a lot of equipment without a single shot being fired. quote: Perhaps impede - but NOT block. OK.

Has the logo been officially accepted by the SC? In other words, can we use it in our sigs yet? I know that it's not in the Race/Caste Logos page but I also noticed a Delta Wing logo in Jaguar's sig that's also absent from the page. Here is a version of the Spectre logo that's been put to scale with the other logos used in the sigs, with some minor adjustments added (notably a spike top instead of a flat top) to maintain the proper x/y proportions.
