Now that the situation in the Commanders' Village appears to be resolved, the Insurgent Secret Base is back in operation (Yippee! Yay! ). It has new pics, sounds and entrance. So, "Request Landing Clearance".

UPDATE: Some good news and some bad news. The Good News: The 'smut vandal' posted a message in front of GALCOM's World announcing that he will stop inserting the pics (Yay!). The Bad News: He also wrote that the structural damage done to the GCV Vigilance and Gamma Wing HQ was not caused by him, so we may have another vandal out there. The Bright Side of the Bad News: The structural damage may not have been an act of vandalism. I have encountered new builders in the Village, who were experimenting with nearby objects. It's possible that the structural damage was caused accidentally by these people, who have little experience building in AW. In any case, everything is back to normal. The Directory is back online and I'm following up on new applications. Insurgent commanders should take a look at the Insurgent Forum regarding the re-activation of the base. Hopefully, this will be my last update related to the incidents of the past four days. Have fun!

quote: I found tringads house torn to shreds... NOW HE'S ATTACKING OTHER ISS FLEET STUFF!!! The vandal had nothing to do with that. Tringad's house has been in tatters for a long time. Many of the old CV structures that were built by tourists are like that.

Attention! All Insurgent AW users. Due to the current situation in the Commanders' Village, the Secret Base will be closed until further notice. So far, it has not been located by the vandal, but I am not taking any risks. All requests for landing clearance should be delayed since I will not be replying to them until the situation is resolved. The base will be put on the second highest security alert, which means that no AW users will be able to navigate the base even if they know where it is. In the meantime, enjoy the new BCM Demo. UPDATE: Third attack in three days. Following up on Pkzip's report, it has been confirmed that $iLk's Bar was hit again, in addition to one of the old CV structures, Sygan Starstation's Administrative Annex. Its signs were changed to 'Sygan Starstation's House of Porn' and every frame and screen was changed (over twenty images). My Directory was also hit (now it's personal ). It will remain offline and I will not be accepting or following up on any applications until the situation is resolved. On Aramike's advice, I left everything as it was. I'll continue to provide updates if needed. [ 06-24-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

UPDATE: After another check through the structures, it was discovered that Gamma Wing HQ took more damage than previously thought. Walls, tables and desks have been moved out of position. Epsilon 5 and I have completed our checks of all new structures. It appears that most of the vandalism occurred in Gamma Wing HQ, the GCV Vigilance, and the various areas of GALCOM's World (including $iLk's Bar and office). The identity of the vandal is unknown at this time, but is believed to be a detractor who is lurking the Commanders' Village and possibly the Battlecruiser forums. All AW visitors and builders are advised to keep a lookout for suspicious avatars.

Unfortunately, I am not joking. We have a serious situation in the Commanders' Village. Any users of the Active Worlds browser, especially the new builders, should go to the Active Worlds thread (Is Anyone Still Using Active Worlds). Please post your replies there. Administrators should lock this 'Emergency Call' thread as soon as possible. [ 06-23-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

ATTENTION ALL ACTIVE WORLDS BUILDERS AND VISITORS: We have a vandal in the Commanders' Village. This is not a joke. Someone has been going to the new buildings and inserting adult pics in the frames. This is the second incident in two days. The latest incident (which took place less than three hours ago) was much worse than the previous one. Epsilon 5 and I haven't examined every place yet, but so far we have discovered the following: All of the frames in $iLk's Bar, which included the BCM box art, beer logos, national flags, and $iLk's portrait on the TV screen were edited and adult pics were inserted. His sign at the back of the building had the word 'porn' inserted. The picture of $iLk and his wife which he placed in his office recently was replaced with an adult pic. The GCV Vigilance (the ship under construction over the Orion Offices) suffered the most damage. The pictures of the SC were replaced with adult pics, the desks were moved out of position, and the hull was deconstructed in some places. Gamma Wing HQ was hit again, with 1 pic found in one of the frames. The text on the entry sign that leads to Epsilon 5's latest structure, Way to Heaven, was replaced with the words 'Way to Hell'. You will be updated with new information as we find it. In the meantime, be on the lookout for suspicious avatars. [ 06-23-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

OK, the new security system has been installed. It's almost impossible to find the base now. [ 06-22-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

The Insurgent Secret Base is now more difficult to find, and as soon as the new security measures are put in, it will be almost impossible. So, if ANY Insurgent commanders are interested in visiting, "Request Landing Clearance". I hope I didn't build this for nothing. My 200th post. Yay! [ 06-21-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

quote: Damn flesh... if only I could transfer my consciousness to a machine. THEN I'd be good to go. Hehe. Just make sure you don't transfer yourself into Mikel's machine. quote: OK. Who put that message in the secret base? After doing a little detective work ( ), I learned that the person who found my base was Epsilon 5. As a result of this security breach, I moved my base. Now, when are you Insurgents gonna apply for the coordinates? I hope I didn't build it for nothing. Hey EP5, have you invited any Orion Commanders to your secret facility? The New Directory will be updated soon.

The New Commanders' Village Directory is up and running. Baloogan, are you going to do anything with that tower lobby? The Insurgent Secret Base has been complete for a few days and waiting for its first Insurgent visitors (go to the Insurgent Forum for details). Is anyone searching for the "secret passage" (evil grin )? It's in the vicinity of my office. [ 06-20-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

Interplay sold!! Another bites the dust
Menchise replied to Supreme Cmdr's topic in PC Gaming & Technology
Don't ask me how food became the subject, but I might as well join in. You haven't lived until you've had chocolate ice cream, Naples style. Italian ice cream rules. -
I have the accelerated version and it doesn't crash (much).

quote: Descent, a FPS? I say it's a simulation. I guess it depends on your point of view. Here is an excerpt from GameSpot's review of Descent 3. In 1995, hot on the heels of id's genre-defining Doom, Parallax Software created its own revolution in frantic shooting games: Descent. Whereas Doom felt immediately familiar by casting you in the role of a human moving around on foot while shooting at similarly gravity-constrained enemies, Descent turned the experience, literally, on its head. Parallax's inspiration was to put you into a free-floating spaceship, inject the ship into a series of 3D spaces, and pit it against other flying objects - the complex maneuverability of a space sim coupled with the relentless pace of a first-person shooter. I prefer to think of it as an action game because the tactics are very simple when compared to space sims. [ 06-19-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ] -
Epsilon 5, I have the pictures of the alien races, which you requested a week ago. Where would you like me to send them? There has been a change of plans regarding the New Commanders' Village Directory: It's going to be in the form of three picture objects and two signs in the Village itself. EP5, do I have your permission to place these objects in front of Galcom's World? The directory will list all of the structures that have been constructed or modified since the opening of this thread (June 2001). I have a list below. If I have missed any structures that qualify, please post the name and location here (if it's a secret hideout, just give me the name ). Galcom's World (including $iLk's Bar and other interiors within) Orion Fleet Offices Gamma Wing HQ Delta Wing Complex Pkzip's House of Turkish Delights Rico Jansen's Office My Office Baloogan's Tower Epsilon 5's Secret Hideout Insurgents' Secret Base

Hey, Baloogan, what happened to the Independants' Offices? It used to be a great big structure with Pink Panther music, now it's a silent marble lobby with no roof.

Any Insurgent with an Active Worlds browser who is interested in seeing the new base should go to the "Secret Base" thread in the Insurgent Forum. Has anyone found the secret passage yet? Anyway, now that the redevelopment of the Commanders' Village has been underway for over a week now, I thought that it would be helpful to new visitors if we started listing the new constructions in this thread (or maybe another thread). I'll start listing in my next post, as soon as I get all of the coordinates together.

quote: Yep, but police people have insurgents red in the scanners. That's odd. According to the manual, the Police attack Raiders and Criminals only (the Insurgent caste is not included), and NPC Insurgents only attack Terran/Military (Galcom and Earthcom) entities. Has this changed for BCM? I know that players can attack what they want, but as far as I know, the Police have no established imperative to attack Insurgents.
-
Well, I'm back (as if I ever left ). I have left several picture frames in the new secret base blank for the new fleet logos, so bring em' on!
-
I think it would be great if BCM Multiplayer had more UCV players. It would make the game more realistic. It's kind of silly that there are more military fleets than there are individual traders.

quote: And PS, it ain't just the Quake series, all software, at all times in the history of computing have become bigger, and more demanding. I like to fool myself occasionally by telling myself that a 1 Gig processor is the fastest that I will ever need. Ha. Ha ha ha ha ha! Hooooooo boy, I wish that were true. Then it'll be 2 Gig, then 5, then whatever. I'll just be very happy after they've made the move from processing information with electrons to photons to quarks, and realize that they really can't get any smaller. Moore's law will be dead and I'll be able to stop with this insane upgrade path every freakin year! On that day gentlemen, I will be a happy man. There is a very simple solution to this upgrade creep (brutal but simple ): Abduct all of the game developers and publishers, put them in a massive classroom, tie them to the chairs, and tell them that they will not be allowed to leave until they have learned Assembly language. OK, so Assembly is very hard to debug (it has no compiler), it's not as portable, and takes ten times longer to write (unless you're an expert with at least a decade of practise); however, Assembly experts make the fastest programs, the smallest programs (in terms of disk space), and, once the bugs are worked out, the most reliable programs. By the way, which language did the SC use to write BC3K and BCM? [ 06-16-2001: Message edited by: Menchise ]

quote: Against the Insurgents, that would be too hard; I'd get blown away. Against GalCom, same deal. My goal, though I do have ICV as a red on my sensors, is not to take down the Insurgency... that's for those GalCommies to do. As I recall, one of the goals of a Police officer is to keep the Raiders off the space lanes. I don't know about the NPC Insurgents, but the Insurgent players in the official fleets are also anti-Raider, and it's against the Insurgent Code of Ethics to attack the Police unless provoked.

quote: Well the Delta Wing Complex is under construction, my office is finished, go to 983N 915E and face north, will get a transporter up to make it easier to get there, but it's up and under construction!! Check it out!! Checked it out. Looking good. Just one thing: The transporter that leads to $iLk's Bar needs new coordinates. I ended up 'inside' one of $iLk's tables.
