Had an interesting time last night......opened up Ep2, intro played then gave me the 'Fatal Error' message (or whatever it is) and threw me to the desktop. Tried again and this time got through to the main menu no problem. Choose the station defence scenario..........and the planet is HUGE, filling up the whole screen and very polygonal. As if I'm in the stratosphere, not just launched from Alderon. Everything else in the scenario is OK. If I choose the Marine mission, I often get thrown back to windows. So un-installed and re-installed the Ep2 and everything was back to normal. Then......updated with the bonus scenario.......and I've got the huge planet and crashing problems again. This happened several times. Basically, updating with the bonus scenario caused problems with the rest of the demo. Any ideas?

Anybody fill me in on this series? I was back in the UK recently and saw one episode, kinda weird but intriguing. How long has it been running etc etc.

Could it be possible I found something the testers didn't? Mercy me Do I get a free copy of BCM?

Now I've had a chance to play Ep2 at length (our guest has left), I've also come across acouple of things: The same problem as Nova with the CC switching to FTOL as soon as you engage the AI and then plummeting to the ground. If I place a waypoint on the island near the naval fleet, the CC will make planetfall at this waypoint. However, if I make planetfall in an FC, it is about 28000 km away from the fleet. If I try to make Jane Doe swim, her equipment drops around her ankles and she won't go anywhere (hehe, my kinda girl ). In the EF marine mission, I keep getting blown up before I can do any serious damage (that's not an issue, it's just my own incompetence) Can't get the Transporter to work, even though it has power. It won't let me set a position (the menu is in red). Love the planetary models, esp on Trion, felt like I was skimming across the desert. Found the switching from roll to yaw as you go from space to planet a little disconserting, I'll just have to get used to it. That night mission on Titani (sp?) is really cool, but pretty tough. Got really disorientated in the dark and found myself at 30 000 altitude chasing a Zenstar. What is the command for 'Match Target Speed'? Is it Ctrl-Tilde or something? My keyboard is German, so a lot of the keystrokes are different. That's all for now, just want to say how much I appreciate all the time SC has put into giving us 2 superb demos, and then to answer our (often ridiculous) questions personally. Not many developers spend so much time in the bulletin boards and it makes such a refreshing change. His manner may be a little brash sometimes, but what do you expect form a man who averages less than 4 hrs sleep a night? Peace

More info: if I right click on either 3klogo.avi or Xpl01.avi, then go to Preview, it gives me a little screen with diagonal black lines on a white background and the message: 'video not available, cannot find vids.MSCV decompressor' Does this help any? Edit: Well yes it did, for some reason my Video (de?)compression wasn't turned on in the Windows setup (I didn't install Win 98 myself, I'll have you know, now all my avis play beautifully Edit #2: Nope, spoke too soon, the Xpl01.avi still doesn't play, but gives this error message (still) No combination of filters could be found to render the stream. (Error=80040218) I checked the Media Player tech site, but this error has no known fix. It just tells me it must be encoded with the wrong codecs. This seems strange, as I assume all the other .avi's use the same codec, and they all play fine. It can't be a corrupt file from the download, as it is the same in episodes 1 and 2, ep1 came from the PCZone CD, while Ep2 was downloaded. Can someone help me with my avi problems (see above posts) it must be something simple, but I can't figure out what. I now have Media Player 7.1 and have installed the 1.04.01 beta drivers for my V5 5500, but still get the same problems with the 2 3000ad logo avis and the Xpl01.avi. I don't understand why all the other Xpl avi's play but not Xpl01? Incidentally, when I close any programme, it takes about half a second for the window to gradually close down the screen, if you see what I mean? I know this is not BC:M related but I wonder if it is symptomatic of the same problems?
-
Personally, I'm guessing at a multiplayer scenario

I have the last official drivers from 3dfx for my Voodoo 5 5500, but I see that the recommended ones for BC:M are the Beta 1.04.01. How stable are they? Also, Voodoo Source have the Beta 1.07 drivers listed, anybody have information on them, stability, recommendations for example?

I don't think I would, I tried to launch a shuttle to do a cargo-sweep while I was still in my Interceptor, but it wouldn't. So I don't think I could access Logistix either. Funny thing about my stolen shuttle, was that it said a prisoner has stolen it. I didn't realise I had any prisoners. I certainly don't remember getting an intruder alert either.

Going off on a slight tangent, I had a lot of fun with this scenario. For some reason, Orion 1 didn't go to the Wayfarer as I ordered it, but the station went down pretty easy and I didn't lose any of my fighters. Once I'd done the station, I hopped into a fighter, set the BC to SAD and did a bit of dog-fighting. One question, when using missiles, the BC fires automatically once a lock is obtained, but the fighters require you to fire them. Should it be like this, and can I turn off the automatic launch in the BC? I also had a shuttle stolen, but by who? I never realised I had intruders until they buggered off with my property! How did they get there? Any more news on a release date SC?

Right, I've downloaded and installed Media Player 7.1 and I still get the same error messages. Edit: And now it plays like a slide-show. What's going on? I'm not apportioning blame, I just want to know what to do next. [ 07-04-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

Ok, to be honest, I thought it was already intalled. Maybe not. Edit: Yes, it is already installed, as I thought. Any other ideas? [ 07-03-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

Ok, did a bit more investigating. I forgot to mention that I can't play the 3000ad logo, it gives me an error message saying the file has no video content, just clicking OK takes me to the main menu no probs. I definately get a crash when it trys to play some explosions. this got me thinking, so I went to the folder which contains all the .avi files and tried to play them. The logo avi won't play, telling me I have an incorrect decompressor or something like that (I'm at work at the mo, so I can't remember the exact text) and tries to log on to the internet (I didn't want to as I was outside my free connection time, tight bastard, yes I know). It also does the same with some (but not all) of the explosion .avi files. I'm assuming this is my problem. I'll try again tonight. Question is, what is my PC trying to connect to, an updated Media player? And will this solve my crashing problem? Update: Attempts at playing the previously non-playing avi's resulted in the downloading of a Cinepak from Microsoft, and now they all play except Xpl01 giving me the following error message: No combination of filters could be found to render the stream. (Error=80040218) So I just copied and renamed another of the Xplo.avi files. However, the logos still won't play, giving me this message: Unable to download an appropriate decompressor. (Error=80040200) The music plays though. Any ideas anyone? [ 07-03-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

OK, that's fair enough, the reason I posted a separate thread was that I couldn't find the designated one at the time, but I probably wasn't looking far enough back (everyone had moved onto Ep2 by then). Then when I did find it, my comments hadn't been moved there. Oh well, you live and learn. Not pissed-off (much), just curious.
-
Because a recent thread of mine disappeared. I was just expressing my views (positive at that) on the Demo. It was neither abusive or inflammatory, just a couple of comments. any ideas? [ 07-02-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

This happens in Ep1 and 2: I invaraibly get thrown back to windows during combat situations, more often than not in F10 mode. Sometimes just tracking a missile it throws me back to the desktop. I don't know whether something has blown up or not, it never gives me the chance to find out. And yes, I do have the /d1 in Ep1. specs: Celeron 633 Voodoo 5 5500 with latest (and last(?)drivers) SBlive win98se 224 MB RAM Erm, anything else relevant? Oh yeah, 4X FSAA (got 'jumping' without it) Screen and game resolution at 960x720, 16 bit.

Oops, sorry. I put it here 'cos the New Commanders forum was quiet, thought I'd get a quicker response here. Feel free to move it by all means. - racks brains trying to think up socialist diatribe, but fails due to being life-long Tory - OK, how about this: predictions for tomorrow's Lions v Wallabies game? Sorry, forgot my own: 25:17 to the lions. Less than 10 point spread anyway, Lions to edge it on forward power (and Wilko's boot) [ 06-29-2001: Message edited by: Paddy Gregory ]

OK, thanks. It's just that I'm sure I only heard 2 'Incoming missile' alerts, and both hit. Maybe the PTA were busy with the escorts at the time.
-
Just a quickie: does the PTA track and fire on incoming missiles as well as hostile ships? It's just that I think I got hit a couple of times in the E1 demo (before I worked out how to use the EMD )

Hey Jez, see what SC has written in this thread. Good news indeed.

Shipping to anywhere in the world, is $9. And the price is set at $45.00. I lowered it, in order to offset the shipping costs for the international BC fans. Also, this only includes the CD-ROM and printed manual. No box. If you want the box, you have to wait until I wrap up the deal am working on, which will have BCM released in Europe, sometime after BCM ships in the US. Thank you SC, that is great news. It's refreshing to see a developer doing something pro-active for fans, with a price reduction too! Wow. Don't care about the box, they take up too much space and I always throw them out anyway. Thanks again SC. PS THanks for the previous offer aramike, but I can get it cheaper from Mr. Smart
