  1. perhaps...unless you are a collector.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Scotty: ... an example or two: - MECTES – Multi Environment Combat, Trading and Exploration Simulation MEMS – Multi Environment Military Simulation I think that MEMS sums it up a little better, as there is more to the military than just shooting everything in sight, just like the game. - I am not trying to steal Luc’s original idea, so MECTES and MEMS should go to him, not me. I will take the assist though. Scotty LOL I like MEMS too, but I think MECTES, although precise, is too long. I was thinking from the start of this thread that the whole point should be from a reviewers perspective. Genre is always something that reviewers use by trying to "niche" everything. BCM is a niche title and it should be easy to say as an achronym for the genre, so I like MECS, and MEMS. The genre should be general and a little vague so that it encompasses following titles....I love setting a precedent. The bottom line is that game types like FPS includes games like System Shock 2 and Deus Ex, but they are not simply First Person Shooters, but adventure games as well. However, Quake, Doom, Unreal Tournement, etc are all precisely FPS games. I think I'll get off the soap box now. [ 10-02-2001: Message edited by: Luc ]
  3. what about rubber bullets or rock salt? rubber bullets are lethal at point blank range, rock salt stings like hell, but shatters on impact into granules. It also makes the "assailant" think twice.
  4. Scotty - I'm not an engineer, but I like to think I know a little bit....at least about firearms and effects of bulletts on aluminum... anyway, a small hole fired through the skin of an aircraft would not by itself cause the skin to disintegrate....however, as Scotty has already mentioned, most of the planes that are flying are left to operate until they can barely fly in order to save costs. Therefore it's conceivable that a bullet fired through the airframe of a 20 year old 747, DC-10, or 737 could shatter the skin....missing rivets, rust, metal fatigue, etc. Anyone remember the 737 that had it's forward section ripped off? (the pilot was actually able to land the thing) I think it was a Hawaiian air plane, if memory serves, that was at about 30,000 feet and a stewardess was sucked off her feet, out of the plane. I seem to recall an incident several years ago about a man who was sucked out of one of the windows in the plane...apparently the pressure differential was so huge that it broke all of his bones and ejected him through the window...I might be thinking of a movie though....I think you might have to be somewhere at around 80,000 feet...or in space to get that kind of differential, but I digress.
  5. LOL okay and now some Red Dwarf; Simulation, Multi Environment Game (SMEG)
  6. I personally think it's a good idea to make a private forum for those that buy the game. It sure as hell weeds out the majority of the 'idiots' out there, besides it is a forum about BCM, not Panty Raider or Deer Hunter 6. Considering that the primary site will still be here and all the information pertaining to the game will still be available, I don't anticipate this being a problem. I have every intention of buying the game...my "problem" is that I live too far away from EB and have no vehicle, but that's not a real problem, if I want it (I do) I will go out and get it...I just didn't preorder. I have the computer, I have the joystick, I have the 19 inch monitor...I'm ready for it.
  7. *sigh* I was just wondering. I am the most patient man in the world....at least my own world.
  8. is there an actual deadline for the SC to pick a winner? just wondering. Dynamic Environment Combat Simulator (DECS) okay my brain is fully wracked. I can't think of any more....and I have always considered myself good at things like this....I hope I win, I've never won anything before.
  9. okay I have another one....sorry, after you did all that work Joel. Multi Environment Combat Simulator (MECS)
  10. Gameshow network? that's nothing..there are tons of stupid networks in the states. A few that spring to mind are; The fireplace channel (24 hours of fireplace video footage). The Aquarium Network (24 hour video footage of different fishbowls and aquariums). what I think would be very scary is something like "The Prostate inspection channel" or "Name that turd"....no wait, that would be a tv show....give it time.
  11. Lord David - I didn't see any mention of Pennywise the clown.....then again, maybe it's an "easter egg" in the game.
  12. I suggest you read the reviews of this game before you say that it is about "communism". it's actually a sci-fi first person shooter set on mars. if you want to play a game where you fight commies, play operation flashpoint.
  13. ah, finally. the evolution of the Nintendo Powerglove.
  14. words fail me at this time to convey my hooror and shock at this series of brutal and cowardly attacks against defenseless CIVILIANS and federal workers of the united states. It's not hard to understand the extreme anger of everyone in the world that has even a microbe of humanity in them towards the obviously extremely organized people responsible for this. It's definitely an act of war against the united states, but done in such a way as it puts several people in the world at risk of a retaliation that will be harsh and global...and likely against many that actually had nothing to do with this (particular) attack, but are actually happy that it happened because of their misguided religious and political motivations. I fear the intense recriminations that this event will bring on so many innocent people, despite the fact that so many untold thousands of innocent people have died today. The threats against people who have had nothing to do with these attacks, but happen to come from the middle east, when it hasn't even been proven that it was orchestrated by people from the middle east. Personally, I believe that ALL north american borders (Canada and the United States) should be firmly closed against immigration and new thoroughly strict laws should be put in place restricting the ingress of people from other countries to enter the north america. North America is no longer isolated from the rest of the world (geographically), but I believe that at this point it definitely should be. This may be extreme, and I agree that it is....however I believe that the initials "USA" should not stand for "Under Surprise Attack".
  15. no, sorry SC. I have a cruddy modem.....I take it from your answer that it IS possible then. that is too dang cool!
  16. as has been stated above, we do not yet understand what causes gravity (or how ito replicate it) except that the larger and denser an object, the stronger it's 'gravitational attraction', that would suggest that a wormhole is similar to a black hole. We would have to be able to measure gravity before experienceing it, and then be able to counteract it. a magical "anti grav device" would be nice, but I like the fact that travelling through a wormhole damages the ship. It makes travelling faster than light a statiscal and engineering analysis instead of "I'm goiung here..." and being there with nothing to do but look around in a half bored daze. To make something realistic, things have to break. I really like that.
  17. will that mean, that you could land in North America somewhere and it's the summer, and then decide, "I'm going to New Zealand, and it's actually snowing?
  18. well, as a Starwars fan, I feel I must rebutt. In the movies, it was called AN Imperial Stardestroyer, but it is an Imperator Class or type ship. all vehicles have classifications. You must also realize that it is not the Tyderium CLASS Shuttle either, but the NAME of the Shuttle that the Rebels stole in Return of the Jedi. oh and thanks, I'm working very hard on that model.
  19. don't feel bad, it can be fairly complicated. shameless plug alert!! This is one of my Works in progress; http://www.globalserve.net/~rexx/ISD-WIP/
  20. R_Wilco - I think you'll find that due to the way the building models are designed in BCM, you'll find that the the interiors cannot be a single model, but a series of attached parts....at least that's how I build models anyway...at this time I don't think it's possible to 'mold' objects as I think you are suggesting. Basically you would need to make modifications to the exteriors as well, to accomodate windows and doors, and then there are are multiple floors to some of the buildings, etc. Let's not forget about matching the textures, and sclae...It's a big job. Designing and then building models is not necessarily easy...especially if you are looking for functionality and a design that actually fits with the universe in which it is set. However, it would be very cool to see wildly different concepts for different cultures, rather than having all the buildings in the entire game looking basically the same with a few altered textures....in my opinion, that's cheating, but you have to keep in mind being able to play it too. 21. interesting notion, but I think you'd have to modify the actual renderer to do something like that...I'm probably wrong though. I do know that there is already a night vision system in the game, but from what I gather, it's not a thermal system though, it's a light amplification system....like the green monochrome images that they kept showing during Desert Storm. If GBSII has the ability to create a thermal system, then it would be a neat effect....however I hardly see the point, at least until GCO is made, due to the fact that building interiors haven't been incorporated. Then again, what's to stop you from learning GBSII and creating the interiors? Interesting that you are wanting to make a mod of BCM before it's even been released yet. Nice thought though.
  22. well, I would think about how much processor power it would take to handle that kind of scaleable effect. Then again, making a scaleable sphere with animated noise material on it (to show the rolling and boiling surface of a star), would actually not be that tough (I can do that), it would just take up a lot of space...expecially if you decide to go and take a joyride through a solar flare...remember that as has been previously indicated GBSII will have the ability to customize models and missions. what's to stop you from creating a star as a spacestation and creating your own materials? oh boy, I can't wait to play with that. That means that you'll be able to create comets, solar flares, black holes, and other cool anomalies....that is (as SC says) if you (we) take the time to learn it.
  23. speaking as a ed animation and modelling hobbyist, a reflection map is a bitmap that is placed on surfaces like windows and face plates, that kind of thing. a good example of this, if any of you have played games like Deus Ex (look at the floors in the HQ) or in driving games when there's a reflection of the sky in 3rd person mode. New reflection maps and mathematical algorithms actually reflect the surroundings in real time, but it's possible to cheat, using a spherical image that is applied to the reflective object, to illustrate the effect. I hope that makes sense....
  24. woohoo!! I certainly didn't expect such a fast response. I'm also surprised that no one else asked this question... btw - thanks for changing the title of the topic. I guess I was trying to be obscure.... I'm am still going to love this game. I can hardly wait until I don't see the outside world again...for a very very long time....people will think I'd gone to prison or something.
  25. wouldn't the solar radiation at that range be like a continuous attack on the shields and hull? the point being that if you got within...say... the orbit of mercury, the intense heat from the sun would have melted away the outer hull armour and cause hull breaches all over the ship until eventually it popped like a shaken beer can?....actually that would be cool to see.
